Climate - Smart Agri-Business Workshop

6th March 2012.

Introduction

• Sun international invests in and manages businesses in Hotel, resorts and gaming

industries in South Africa, other parts of Africa and South America. Sun International

carries with it a very aggressive CSI policy to promote upliftment and social – economical

development of the communities in which the group operates primarily through

investment of financial resources.

• Below are some of climate smart agribusiness interventions being driven by Sun

International Zambia ltd although within the same scope of projects and programmes have

encountered some challenges such as erratic rainfall patterns and Black frost in

Livingstone and Kazungula Districts which actually necessitated the development of these

activities. A number of these activities have been developed in partnership with

ASNAPP(Agribusiness in Sustainable Natural African Plant Products).

Hydroponics

• Crops are sown in media ( now sawdust from small scale carpenters in the surrounding communities) under cover. The effluence is

recycled for usage in the irrigation and fertigation of lawns and other plants. Irrigation is by drip system.

• Cocoa Pit

• Saw dust

• Fruits such as Banana etc

• Water harvesting strategies

Hydroponics

• We have localized procurement

of fruit and vegetables thereby

reduction of carbon emissions by

avoiding procurements from

South Africa and Lusaka.

Farmers Market

Vermiculture • Usage of food waste from kitchens and paper from offices feeding the worms

.Worm tea and compost which are the byproducts of these worms are used in

fertication of fruit, vegetables, herbs etc.

• Worm Tea

• Worm composite

• Paper

• Kitchen waste

Vermiculture

Tree Planting

• A process started in 2008 and its continuing including developments of exotic fruits such as Table grapes. July 2012 we

launch the project on a big scale with ASNAPP and GREENPOP from Cape Town, RSA

• Amarula, Moringa, Masuku, Masawa, Mubuyu

• Nitrogen Inplants, indigenous fruits, indigenous juices.

• Creative innovation of arts, Curios

Bee Keeping

• We live in the park where human and animal conflict is common especially elephants. Introducing bees around the

fields will refrain elephants destroying crops and also increase crop pollination.

• Honey

• Propolis

• Wax

WAPIs

• Saving energy (charcoal, hydro power) through introduction of these simple instruments amongst our communities.

• Aluminium Sulphate

• Clorine

Briquettes

• By collection of cardboards and paper and compressing them into artificial charcoal reduces cutting of trees for charcoal.

• Waste bottle tiles – reducing land fills

Mushrooms

Challenges

• Finding financial stakeholders or partners to help roll out these programs/projects on larger scales including projects such as

canning, bottling and drying industries of fruits, vegetables and meats.
