Heran, BSThis Cochrane Review found that exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is effective in reducingtotal and cardiovascular mortality (in medium to longer term studies) and hospital admissions(in shorter term studies) but not total MI or revascularisation. The population studied in thisreview is predominantly male, middle aged and low risk.http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/o/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD001800/frame.html

Reduced or modified dietary fat for preventing cardiovascular diseaseHooper, L et al.The findings of this Cochrane Review are suggestive of a small but potentially importantreduction in cardiovascular risk on modification of dietary fat, but not reduction of total fat, inlonger trials. Lifestyle advice to all those at risk of cardiovascular disease and to lower riskpopulation groups, should continue to include permanent reduction of dietary saturated fatand partial replacement by unsaturates. The ideal type of unsaturated fat is unclear.http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/o/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD002137/frame.html

    Diabetes

Glycaemic control in type 1 diabetes during real time continuous glucose monitoringcompared with self monitoring of blood glucose: meta-analysis of randomisedcontrolled trials using individual patient dataPickup, JC et al.The authors concluded that continuous glucose monitoring was associated with a significantreduction in HbA1c percentage. Exposure to hypoglycaemia was also reduced. The mostappropriate use of continuous glucose monitoring is likely to be when targeted at people withtype 1 diabetes who have continued poor control during intensified insulin therapy and whofrequently use continuous glucose monitoring.BMJ 2011; 343:d3805 doi: 10.1136/bmj.d3805 (Published 7 July 2011)

Insulin detemir versus insulin glargine for type 2 diabetes mellitusSwinnen, SG et al.This Cochrane Review suggests there is no clinically relevant difference in efficacy or safetybetween insulin detemir and insulin glargine for targeting hyperglycaemia. However, toachieve the same glycaemic control insulin detemir was often injected twice-daily in a higherdose but with less weight gain, while insulin glargine was injected once-daily, with somewhatfewer injection site reactions.http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/o/cochrane/clsysrev/articles/CD006383/frame.html
