From large figurative works such as Joan of Arc in the Ilex Grove, to decorative architectural features such as the Borghese Balustrade on the Parterre; for three centuries new art and design has offered fresh perspectives of Cliveden’s remarkable gardens. This year visitors have the opportunity of seeing sculptures by an artist widely regarded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation. Spanning over 40 years of the artist’s career, the works in the exhibition are predominantly installed along Cliveden’s Green Drive – a mile long path that runs the length of the eastern side of the estate. I am delighted and thrilled to see my father’s sculptures in Cliveden’s historic and beautiful grounds. His revolutionary approach to sculpture aimed to break down traditional conventions and allow the viewer to engage directly with the sculpture. Here at Cliveden the unique outdoor setting of the Green Drive with its undulating landscape and long distance views not only allows for his sculptures to be seen as a body of work, but on an individual basis, as you journey from one end to the other. After studying sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London, he worked as assistant to Henry Moore. He came to public attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, where he exhibited large abstract sculptures. Brightly painted and standing directly on the ground, they engaged the spectator on a one- to-one basis. This was a radical departure from the way sculpture had hitherto been seen and paved the way for future developments in three- dimensional art. Caro’s teaching at St Martin’s School of Art in London (1953 -1981) was very influential. His questioning approach opened up new possibilities, both formally and with regard to subject matter. His innovative work as well as his teaching led to a flowering and a new confidence in sculpture worldwide. Major exhibitions include retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1975), the Trajan Markets, Rome (1992), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1995), Tate Britain, London (2005), and three museums in Pas-de-Calais, France (2008), to accompany the opening of his Chapel of Light at Bourbourg. Anthony Caro has been awarded many prizes, including the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in Tokyo in 1992 and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sculpture in 1997. He holds many honorary degrees from universities in the UK, USA and Europe. He was knighted in 1987 and received the Order of Merit in May 2000. The Green Drive at Cliveden is a mile long avenue that resembles the nave of a gothic cathedral. The crowns of its 100 or so year-old oak and beech trees reach up some 30metres and touch at their apex like a vaulted ceiling. Here, every day of the week, rain or shine, people come to walk. Alone, in couples, as families, with their dogs, they may saunter, walk briskly or meander across the 14 metre wide path as they make their way either to or from the house with its Parterre, or down to the River Thames.

Whilst Anthony Caro’s very early sculptures were exclusively figurative, the rigorously abstract assemblages of steel and found industrial objects, for which he is celebrated, continue to maintain a relationship with the human form. Their height, apparent solidity or weightlessness; their brightly coloured or impenetrable surfaces; their sweeping shapes and rugged forms, evoke characteristics and sensations that are palpable and have distinct parallels with our own physical selves.

Caro was one of the world’s most respected, radical and influential sculptors. Here at Cliveden, whether marching in step, stubbornly fixated to the spot, or gracefully hovering above the surface, his sculptures will, for seven months, accompany the walkers on their promenade under the trees.
