He came from a large family and seemed to be E the runt of the litter. One day in early spring we dressed him up like a devil, all in black, with a tail and most importantly a three pronged red fork. Then we stuck him in a box, put the cover on it, hauled it to the convent porch, left it at the front door, rang the bell and ran. Perhaps goodness draws evil, the way moths can’t resist open flames. We wonder if goodness is really that real, really that good. Maybe that’s why devils have pitchforks, to try to poke holes in goodness. And maybe it’s why angels have nothing, only who and what they are. May Sister Borromea rest in peace. I’m sure she was tested by more than our prank. As far as I know, the only weapon she had in her battles, Like Jesus in the wilderness, was herself and who she loved....GRS Only the cook sister was at home. We knew that. Her name was Borromea after a theologian saint. She got his last name, his first name was Charles. She was about 70--and not just because so many sisters looked old in their habits. She really was elderly. She was also kind and gentle and made cookies for us whenever she could. How we got it into our heads to dress up one of our classmates as the devil, give him a pitchfork, hide him in a box to jump out at her is beyond me now.I don’t remember what happened. I don’t remember if she laughed or she screamed or if she had a heart attack and died right there–although it would seem likely I would remember that. I also don’t know why we thought a devil was the perfect personage to visit this kindly old woman who had never done us any harm but only good. Cliffy

CATHOLIC PARISH

The pictures I’ve been using to accompany the seasons of Advent and Christmas were taken by my friend Justin Patchin. Justin is a

professor, author, speaker, photographer and all around good

guy. He has a website where his photographs can be purchased.

Check it out at:

Just one week ago I announced that someone had pledged one-half (about $30,000) the cost of re-doing the elevator. In that one week, we have received another $5,400 toward the elevator fund. I’d say that’s pretty remarkable. It leaves only $25,000 more and we’ve got ourselves a new elevator.

Thank you to the generous people who this past week stepped forward and thank you to all of you who pledged to the capital campaign. The new gathering space will soon be taking shape...GRS

When I think of this class, it is their smiles that come to mind. I am amazed at the positivity and happiness they bring to each day. They are always up, bright and will keep any teacher on their toes. With that positive attitude comes an eagerness, curiosity and openness to learn that will benefit this group as they progress through their years together. They ask questions (yes, lots of questions), they share stories, and genuinely want to learn. Their teacher, Ms. Graske, recently was testing the students on their knowledge of prayers they should know in 1st Grade. She was amazed that across the board, these 12 kids already had most of them committed to memory, and it was only October. This year, they will continue to learn to read (this is a big one in 1st Grade), and will grow in math, social studies, religion, science and their other subjects. They laugh, play, sing and pray. And wow, can they dance! Principal Magee

I have the privilege of seeing our students do some amazing things during the school day. I get invited to presentations on presidents, saints and other historical figures. I have been able to watch students conduct science experiments, perform skits and achieve mathematical feats. But twice over the past 12 months, it was students dancing in Mrs. Laust's Music class that completely made my day. Both times, it happened to be our current 1st Grade students. Their pure joy and expression when given the chance to freely respond to the music they are learning about is infectious. For the parents and teachers who have seen the videos, they know that you can't watch the videos without smiling or laughing.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. • I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

2 Welcome to St. Joseph Catholic Church • Prescott, WI

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. • We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. • Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. • For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

FASTING & ABSTINENCE DURING LENTCatholics of age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics from age 18-59 fast (health permitting), limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals, which don’t equal one full meal together, each day.

NEWLY BAPTIZEDWe joyfully welcome, Charlotte Marie May, daughter of Michael and Sheila May, Mary Therese Block, daughter of Joe & Amy Block, and Bexlee Rae Lentz, daughter of Cody & Ashley Lentz who were baptized in our parish on 3 March 2019.

Equipping the Family, Safeguarding ChildrenPornography changes the way children and adults think about sex and marriage. A recent survey of American teens showed that they believe not recycling is now a worse issue than watching pornography. It’s time to reclaim virtue and protect our young people from the tempting pull of inappropriate online content.Take a step to create a safe haven in your home by joining The Equipped 7-Day Challenge: A Digital Crash Course by texting SECURE to 66866 to receive seven days of emailed digital tips!

Second Sunday of Lent

ST. JOSEPH PARISH SCHOOL As the end of winter approaches (hopefully soon), our school year should have a fairly consistent flow as we journey through Lent and begin looking ahead toward Easter. School was not in session this past week, and we unfortunately missed out on having Ash Wednesday school Mass because of the timing of spring break. But we will jump right into this new liturgical season once we are back. The rest of March, students and teachers will also be working diligently on core curriculum and skills, and focusing on a few larger projects as well.

March is also our month for registration. Just before break, our current families received their registration packets for the 2019-2020 school year. Although our enrollment saw a slight increase recently, we are hopeful to continue that trend of growth this coming school year! But we need your help. Do you know a family who may be curious about our classrooms, teachers and the St. Joseph Parish School experience? If you said yes, please tell them about us! And If you or anyone you know has questions and would like to learn more about our School, please contact me at 715-262-5912, or by email at [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support of this school!

Communion: Take Up Your Cross (#698) Charles Everest

Closing: Kyrie Eleison Michael joncas

1) You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: “My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!”

Refrain: And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.

2) The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield.

3) You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.

4) For to his angels he’s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
