A World at Prayer is a World at Peace

Recently I was on holidays in Achill Island and during my break, I went to visit the Father Patrick Peyton centre in Attymass. Attymas is a small village in north Mayo about an hour’s drive from Achill Island. Fr. Patrick Peyton was a native of Attymass who emigrated to America as a young man and was ultimately ordained a priest there. He died in 1992 and is now known as the Rosary Priest.

After becoming a priest, he devoted his life to promoting family prayer, especially the Family Rosary. Fr. Peyton’s great gift was that he was able to persuade the celebreties and public figures in Hollywood and New York to help him in his life-long work. Many of the politicians, actors and singers who helped him in his work were not Catholic and the Rosary would not be a prayer they were familiar with. But, Fr. Patrick Peyton struck a chord with these famous people because he spoke convincingly of the need for family prayer and it did not matter whether that family was Catholic or Protestant, Jew or Gentile, black or white, as long as they prayed. A very clever catchphrase he used at his prayer rallies was “a world at prayer is a world at peace”.

Fr. Patrick Peyton’s catchphrase is a timely reminder of what we ordinary folks here in Clondalkin can do. Our prayers, no matter how short or seemingly insignificant, can make a difference. They join up with the prayers of other people of goodwill all over the world, be they Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or whatever. When they all join up, we have a world at prayer and, as Fr. Peyton so often said, a world at prayer is a world at peace.
