Mass Intentions

Faith Formation Schedule

This Week at SEAS

Mass Presiders Dear Faith Formation Families, On this Feast of the Holy Family we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you have shown us in 2018. From the construction chal-lenges that required a late start to the year, to the re-cent flooding, you have been generous, kind, support-ive and accommodating. When we asked for volunteers for any of our pro-grams you have willing and joyfully stepped forward to answer our call. And, when we asked for coats for families who were going without, you opened your closets and generously gave to boys and girls who needed warmth in winter. As the article in today’s bullentin says, “All families are holy families.” And we are grateful for all of the holy families we have in our parish and in our faith formation program. Wishing all of you the best in 2019! Sincerely, The Faith Formation Staff

Faith Formation classes resume Sunday, January 6.

EVERY FAMILY IS A HOLY FAMILY In a way every family is a holy family – the family is the place of love, with its flaws in trying to love well, and its times of great joy. If you look around a church on a Sunday there is a difference in the congregation which in-cludes families and the one that does not. Something about the young and old together, and the messiness even of the dif-ferent generations, cheers us up. Family is the first natural grouping, no matter what its makeup.

The feast today is to highlight the importance of family, and the focus of the church on trying to support and enhance family life. While the holy family was a small and rather holy grouping, it was here that Jesus learned the best things of human life – how to care and to love, to look after a widowed mother and earlier, an elderly father-figure; he learned the give and take of the ex-tended family, and in the family learned his faith and to pray. His family is holy because it was a place of love.

Pope Francis says about the family: ‘every family is always a light, howev-er faint, amid the darkness of this world.’ Even in the darkness that can go with family life in the middle of crime, addiction and conflict, there is a light in the love of peo-ple’s hearts.

It’s a feast to encour-age us in giving thanks, in sharing love and always in being there for the members of our family.

Remember the family members for whom you are grate-ful: thank God for them, living and dead.

Holy family, help us grow in love in our own family. Donal Neary SJ from www.sacredheartmessenger.com

“Every family is always a light, however faint, amid the darkness of this world.” Pope Francis

Prayer for Families We bless your name, O Lord, for sending your own incar-nate Son, to become part of a family, so that, as he lived its life, he would experience its wor-ries and its joys. We ask you, Lord, to protect and watch over this family, so that in the strength of your grace its members may enjoy prosperity, possess the priceless gift of your peace, and, as the Church alive in the home, bear witness in this world to your glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. —from usccb.org. Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, the “en

-flesh-ment” of God as a human person. In Jesus, God is bodily present in the human story. Today we honor the Holy Family, helping us to see that God is active in daily family life. God is near at hand, amidst the tensions, joys, and uncertainties of family life. As our Gospel passage describes, even with fam-ily miscommunications and with limited understand-ing of Jesus’ mission, the Holy Family persevered in their life together. Like many family conflicts, there was no immediate or clear resolution of the issues raised by Jesus and by Mary. God’s intentions for the family, and for Jesus, were still unfolding. They con-tinued to stay connected with each other and with God. Within the turbulence of family life, they trust-ed God to actively sustain and guide them into an uncertain future. We are invited to follow their exam-ple. HANNAH AND MARY

The story of Hannah and her son Samuel in today’s reading from 1 Samuel was especially im-portant for Luke’s Gospel. The passage describes the presentation of young Samuel to the priest Eli as part of the story of the faith of Hannah. Hannah had been in great suffering, as she had long desired to have a son, and saw this as central to her vocation and iden-tity. Hannah’s deep honesty with God during her dis-tress, together with her confident persistence in pray-er, reveals her as a model of faith. Luke links Hannah to Mary through the Magnificat song in Luke 1, which mirrors Hannah’s joyous song in 1 Samuel 2. Luke links young Samuel to Jesus, through the presentation in the Temple in Luke 2.

Luke is suggesting that God is up to some-thing big. Just as Samuel initiated a turning point in Israel’s history, Jesus is about to open a new chapter in human history. Their stories are rooted in the re-markable faith of their mothers, Hannah and Mary. WEAVING THE STORY

Today’s passage from Luke is the only story about Jesus in the Gospels that occurs between Jesus’ infancy and his adult ministry. Luke uses the story to weave these elements together.

This story, like all the infancy passages, em-phasizes that Jesus was born Son of God. Jesus’ first spoken words in Luke conclude with “I must be in my Father’s house.” God is his Father, and Jesus speaks as God’s Son.

Luke connects the future ministry of Jesus with the scene at the temple with the teachers. Jesus’ listeners are astounded at his wisdom. This antici-pates similar scenes as an adult. Luke also subtly hints at Jesus’ resurrection, with details such as the question “why were you looking for me?” similar to “why do you seek the living one among the dead?” Luke invites us to see his Gospel as an integrated whole, weaving together Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection.
