The project
How it started…..To create and deliver an interactive skills recognition tool for the refugee participants of No Sweat Fashion.
To create and deliver learning for 2 x units of competency from the Certificate 3 in Clothing Production through the use of ipads and in the workplace
We wanted to create a product that could be:• Accessible to the participant in the workplace• Recognise their existing skills• Gap train the participants • Use the Kaleen High school network and ipads.
The project
How we are achieving our goals…..Our team – Nora Tuchagues, Naomi Thomson, Teri Silk, Steve Wright, Brett Butler, Deb Bowman and Jayne Miller
We have utilised the skills of the teachers within Creative Industries. We’ve identified the strengths of each team member and we are learning as we go.
We have been working with the NSF staff and participants in the lead up to delivering the elearning products. This has been important as it has helped us:• Understand their language and literacy skills• Understand their industry skills and gaps• The limitations in the Kaleen HS network and ipad • The limitations in the ipads and elearn
The project
What we have ended up with….. We have taken a skills recognition word document and unpackaged this and then repacked it. We've looked at the skills required in each UOC and then packaged these into ‘skill sets’
The project
How are the skills recognition tools being used…..We are based at NSF with a teacher for 3 hours per week supporting the refugees in collecting their evidence. As they work they have been collecting since November. This has allowed the participants to
• Use the ipads and become familiar with them• Take photos and videos of themselves and support each other in
their own learning. The development of team has been remarkable within the NSF participants.
The projectWhat we have ended up with….. The creation of the unit of competency workbooks or tools
Nora Tuchagues and Naomi Thomson with educational input from Terri Silk and Steve Wright and literacy support from Deb Bowman have been working away at creating ibooks.• Looked at the UOC and brought them back to the critical aspects• Where possible we have used real life or work-based situations as
examples• To overcome copyright we have used our own video and images• Created quizzes that support the underpinning aspects of the UOC
with a case study developed as summative assessment• A interactive activity sheet has been developed to capture the
student responses and these will be submitted by drop box or at CIT into elearn
The project
The creation of the unit of competency workbooks or tools
The ibooks are for the following UOCs:• LMTGN2003B• MSAENV272A
What we have learnt:• Finding the right app is important – we’re still
experimenting• The ibooks create excellent PDF books that are useful
backup to the ibook and have interactivity.
Overview of the project
Where we are now
Most participants have begun the ‘formal’ skills recognition process. This is behind schedule but we have made up time by:
• Supporting the learners in collecting their evidence. • Helping them to familiarise themselves with the
technology
Overview of the project
Where we are now
The entire group of refugees began using ibook UOCs on the 2nd May.
Where we ended up….
• An rpl tool that teachers can take out to students• A participant group who have progressed through the
certificate I and are continuing to undertake learning through the workplace in certificate II and certificate III
• An interactive ibook that has multiple uses• A group of teachers who have developed into an amazing
team.
