Cloud Computing: 2013 will bring continued growth in all types of public, private and hybrid clouds

3 Cloud Computing: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend ReportJanuary 17, 2013

“Survey results indicate that there is a clear, emerging preference for private versus public cloud, based on company size. Customers are turning to cloud for cost reduction, for the more efficient use of IT, and for the improvement of the business environment.” – IDC (link)

“2013 is the year that companies need to implement a hybrid cloud strategy that puts select workloads in the public cloud and keeps others in-house.” – Computerworld (link)

“Worldwide spending on public IT cloud services will be more than $40 billion in 2013 and is expected to approach $100 billion in 2016” – IDC (link)

Private

Public

Hybrid

“The total public cloud services market size in 2011 was $91.4 billion, and it will grow to $206.6 billion in 2016. As the market grows, IaaS will become a larger part of the overall market, while the market share of cloud management and security services will grow as well.” – Gartner (link)

Important Trends for Cloud Computing in 2013

1. Growth: Growth continues across the board in public, private, and hybrid clouds as benefits are too good to pass up.

2. Private Clouds: The hype is over. Expect deployments to increase significantly in 2013,

3. Hybrid Clouds: Security and outages of public clouds drives demand.

4. Public Clouds: Competitors wishing to compete against Amazon in IaaS market must differentiate their services somehow.

5. Mobile Clouds: A whole new generation of cloud apps designed for mobile work force.

6. Local Clouds: Some clouds need to be managed at the local level in country (e.g. Finance & HR).

7. Cloud Integration and Management: IT shops will need help integrating and managing the growing number of Clouds used throughout the enterprise.

8. Cloud Security: IT departments need to stay on top of this. Expect the market for Cloud Security Services to grow thanks in part to growth of BYO devices and apps.

9. Demand for Skills: According to an IDC study, the demand for cloud computing will grow at six times the rate of IT skills overall.

10. Impact on Role of CIO and IT Staff: CIOs need to secure, manage, and govern cloud services. Gartner sees a new role - Cloud Brokerage Services

Cloud Computing – Trend Overview

5 Cloud Computing: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend ReportJanuary 17, 2013

Cloud computing provides individuals and organizations with new options on how they acquire or deliver IT services, with reduced emphasis on the constraints of traditional software and hardware licensing models.

Drivers • Clouds offer cost savings and an attractive pay-as-you-go model• Clouds can enable the speed of delivery of new services and new capabilities• Hybrid cloud models allow organizations to move part of their data into the public cloud, while keeping

other IT-resources on-site or in a private cloud

Challenges• Customers continue to be concerned about the security risks of cloud computing. Many users don’t

want their data stored by a third party or where other users potentially have access to their data• Reliability of some public clouds.

Implications• The demand for anytime, on-the-go accessibility will be a major force in shaping cloud computing• Expect to see continued development of delivery models (Iaas, PaaS, and Saas) as customers seek to

build and deploy cloud applications• Startups, companies with complex supply chain operations and companies going through

reorganizations or business process transformations are good candidates for clouds• Large enterprises will need to plan how to migrate apps to the cloud• Mobile cloud services will experience large growth in 2013

“The global cloud computing market is expected to grow at an 30% CAGR reaching $270 billion in 2020.” – Market Research Media (link)

Cloud Computing has moved beyond the hype. It is a highly disruptive trend that brings with it new opportunities

6 Cloud Computing: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend ReportJanuary 17, 2013

“The cloud will change IT as nothing before it has. It may end up removing the last vestiges of the captive IT organization that "owns" its enterprise as surely as the enterprise owns IT. CIOs are right to start addressing it now. They can't afford to be caught unaware by it, no matter how and when they choose to incorporate the cloud into the enterprise.” – Gartner (link)

“One of the biggest advantages of the cloud is also one of the most overlooked: the ability to accelerate innovation. By moving to the cloud model, you can scale back investment in non-differentiating IT infrastructure and instead focus on exploring big, new ideas that lead to better products, services and business results..” – Forbes (link)

IBM Video: The Power of Cloud is Driving Business Model Innovation

“The rapid growth of the cloud computing industry presents new business opportunities and opens doors for SMB’s, large corporations and all businesses in between. With rapid growth comes a rapidly changing landscape in which early adopters are the ones to see the greatest benefit.” – Wired (link)

“Software as a service (SaaS) … will claim the largest share of public IT cloud services spending over the next five years. But other categories, notably basic storage and platform as a service, will show faster growth. Accelerating PaaS rollouts over the next 12-18 months will be critical to maintaining strong cloud momentum– IDC (link)

“The personal cloud will gradually replace the PC as the location where individuals keep their personal content, access their services and personal preferences and center their digital lives. The personal cloud shifts the focus from the client device to cloud-based services delivered across devices.” – Gartner (link)
