Data center downtime – the human factor
Admin “Removes

Two other subsystems
crash
Subsystems restarting –takes a long
time

• Can your business live with this?
• What would you do in this case?

Lesson learned about the cloud
• The lesson is NOT to avoid the cloud! but…
• “The cloud” is just another data center – just managed by someone else
• Your control on it is limited:– Public cloud – only what the APIs/Console expose to us– Private cloud – only what the cloud management enables
So luckily, says the admin, “the cloud protects my data”, right?

Does cloud data need protection?Common Misconceptions
My AWS instances are protected with HA
capabilities, why do I need more protection?
(a startup CEO)
My data is in the cloud, and the cloud will protect it
automatically. I have no need for additional data
protection(common reaction)
I run on Cloud Foundry, and it has built-in protection. Every DB has its own
mechanism.(a cloud-native developer)
There is no market for cloud native data protection. It’s
built in!(Industry Analyst)
This protects the compute, how do you protect the persistent
data?
AWS S3 availability –99.9%
AWS EBS annual failure rate is 0.1-0.5%
Can you recover deleted/lost items in your
SaaS application? (hint: mostly ‘no’)
DP in PaaS is uncoordinated:

Refactor & Evolve – IaaS data protectionChallenges
• Public cloud only offers APIs requiring user scripting for automation
• No tools to control the number of copies at scale
• No tools to provide full instance recoveries quickly
VS.
