August 18th- Timed events, show starting at

4-H/FFA Livestock Judging
Try out your
livestock judging
skills at the 4-H &
FFA Livestock
Judging Contest
which will be held on Tuesday, July 16, at
the Small Show Ring located on the south
end of the Muscatine County Fairgrounds in
West Liberty. Registration will begin at 8:30
am with the competition beginning at 9:00
am. Species to be judged include: beef,
sheep, and swine. For more information,
check out Division MM in the 4-H/FFA fair
book.
Livestock Health Papers
Reminder to all who are bringing any kind of
animal to the fair – from fish to beef!
Before you can bring your animal(s) to the
fairgrounds you must have a veterinarian look
at it (them) and issue a certificate of
inspection declaring a clean bill of health.
Sheep must be inspected within 14 days of
being brought to the fair, all other animals
must have their health papers within 30 days.
Failure to have health papers will exclude the
exhibitor from being able to show their animal
until it has been cleared by a veterinarian. The
purpose of having health papers is to help
stop the spread of diseases to the other
animals exhibited at the fair.
Bucket Calf
Bucket Calf Reports are due to
the Extension office by 5pm on July 10th.
This is new this year. Diane Brooks will be
sending out more information.

Fair Information
Fair Entry
All county fair entries, including livestock,
static exhibits (those that are in the 4-H
Exhibit Building) Clothing Event, and
Communications, are to be made through
FairEntry. FFA members will also be able
to enter livestock and photography exhibits
through Fair Entry.
County Fair livestock entries are to be
made from May 16 to June 16 in fair
entry. Livestock has an earlier deadline
because programs need to be created,
numbers assigned, etc. Livestock entries
made after June 16 will be charged a $25
late fee per entry through July 1st.
AFTER JULY 1ST THERE WILL BE NO
ENTRIES ACCEPTED!!!
This year the process for judging static
exhibits will be slightly different. Instead of
exhibit tags with a bar code for scanning,
each exhibitor will have a sheet with the
exhibits they entered listed with a bar code
next to the exhibit. That barcode will be
scanned instead of one on the exhibit tag.
Static entries can be added up to the day
they are judged and can be written on the
bottom of the exhibitor’s sheet and entered
into FairEntry manually.
Using Pinterest
Pinterest is a popular site for 4-H’ers to use for
gathering ideas for fair exhibits. Make sure to
cite the correct site where you got the idea for
your project and not just Pinterest itself.
Please Cite your sources some where on your
write up or in your goal sheet. Goal questions
can found on page 8 of the fair book.
Copyright and 4-H Exhibits
As you prepare exhibits for the fair, you need to
be particularly aware of copyright rules.
Exhibition of derivative works created by a
4-H’er is prohibited without the written
permission of the original copyright holder/
owner. Use of copyrighted or trademarked
designs, images, logos, or materials in 4-H
exhibits is prohibited unless written permission
has been obtained from the copyright or
trademark holder/owner. For additional
information, contact the Extension Office or see

Fair Time
Fair Book is Available
The 2019 Fair book is on the Muscatine County
Extension Website!!! You will be able to print
the complete fair book or only the divisions you
need.
State Fair Livestock ID’s
4-H livestock entries for the Iowa State Fair will open in 4hOnline on June 1 and will close at 11:59 pm on July 1.
Don’t Forget Your Write-Up
Don’t forget to do a write- up report on your fair
exhibits. Information to include in the report can
be found in the fair book on page 7, item #11. The
write-up doesn’t need to be long but it should be
easy to read. Adding pictures of you completing
each project is always a nice touch with the
judges.
Premier Exhibitor
High School livestock exhibitors who exhibit
beef, sheep, or swine are eligible to earn
college scholarships through the Premier
Exhibitor Competition held during the fair.
Scholarships are awarded based on a written
exam, an interview, a skillathon, (all held on
July 15 at 6:00 pm in the 4-H Exhibit
Building), and either your showmanship and
live placing or if you have not entered a beef,
sheep, or swine exhibit in the fair, then you
can use your placing in the livestock judging
contest.
To enter, select the species in which you
would like to compete in the Premier
Exhibitor question when you make your
entries in the FairEntry program. More
information can be found in the
4-H/FFA fair book under Division OO.
Fair Passes
4-H members and their families will need to
contact their 4-H club leader or the fair office to
purchase fair passes. 4-H/FFA member, club
leader, and superintendent passes are availa-
ble anytime at the lower rate. However, parents
and non-4-H siblings have a price increase after
July 10.

Fair Time
Herdsmanship
In addition to taking proper care of your
animals, herdsmanship also includes
keeping alleys and stall/pens clean and
orderly. As you prepare for the fair, don’t
forget to plan ahead for the herdsmanship
contest. Show pride in your club/chapter’s
livestock exhibits by hanging a club sign,
having stall cards for all your club’s
livestock entries, and decorating your club’s
stalls/pens.
Herdsmanship judges will wander through
the barns at various times during the fair to
score how clean clubs/chapters keep their
livestock. So you will want to stay on top of
keeping your animals comfortable and their
pens clean. Check out the Herdsmanship
criteria in the fair book (Division LL).
Attention Cattle Show
Exhibitors
The Fair board has
requested that all Cattle
remain either in the Barn
or tie outs at all time.
There will be no more
individual pens set up
outside where the trailers are parked.
This is a safety hazard for the entire fair.
If anyone has any questions or concerns,
you may contact a fair board member.
Dog Class information
Dog Class will resume at
Rock’n Boot Ranch for June
30th. Starting July 7th it will be
held in West Liberty cattle barn
6pm until finished. The last dog class, will be
held Sunday, July 14th at 6pm until finished.
We will have a doggie picnic (potluck please
bring a dish, dessert or chips to share. Also
please bring your own drinks and a chair).
Fair Entry
Have you decided which static exhibits you
are bringing to be judged in the 4-H Exhibit
Building? If so, it’s time to get them entered
into the FairEntry program. You will need
your 4hOnline email address and password
to log into FairEntry to enter your static
exhibits.
As you make your static exhibit entries, you
must continue all the way through the
process, hit the submit button. There is no
cost for static exhibits so the payment amount
will be zero, but your entry is not completed
until you hit the submit button.
Please try to have your static entries entered
by noon on Friday, July 12th. If you have a
late entry it can be added at check-in time on
July 15th.
We will be using the former fair tags we
have used in the past to attach to exhibits.
If clubs need exhibit tags,
Please stop by the Extension office and pick
some up!

the design elements and/or art principles in
certain classes, be aware that the judge may
still ask you to describe a design element
and/or art principle as it relates to your

a statement about a few of them and how
they relate to your exhibit in your write-up.
