A gift of hope

By Jennifer LangFor former foster kids who have

left government care, the holidays can be a lonely, dark time.

As they “age out” of the system at 19, many fi nd themselves unable to aff ord the essen-tials, like food and shelter.

Lacking the kind of sup-port a loving, stable family provides, they don’t nec-essarily have the basic life skills that other kids their age do – such as opening a bank account, signing up for school, making it through a successful interview, or fi nding a safe place to live.

At 19, they’re considered adults, expected to be living independently and fending for themselves, explains Kisti Singh of SOS Children’s Village BC.

“Th ere is no funding in place for

kids aft er they age out,” she says.“Sometimes situations are nego-

tiable with foster parents,” she says. “Sometimes, they accommodate a youth if they are going to school.”

Th e society is asking people to give gift cards and and donations in an annual Christmas appeal in support of at-risk youth in the transition to adult-hood program.

Last year, the commu-nity responded generous-ly, donating $7,500 in gift

cards that were given to former foster children in Surrey, helping them to buy food, warm winter clothing and bus fare – along with sending a message of hope.

to Canada’s military history,” said Capt. Mark Iredale, Command-ing offi cer of the 2277 Corps.

Th e dinner took place Dec. 13 at the Cloverdale Legion, where cadets learned how in the midst of battle the Canadian offi cers were determined to provide a good Christmas meal with all the trimmings for their men, scrounging table linens, china dishes, beer and wine, roast pork, applesauce, caulifl ower, mashed potatoes, gravy, chocolates, oranges, nuts, and cigarettes..

Th e Canadian soldiers ate in shift s before returning to battle, as a padre prayed with the men and an organist played “Silent Night,” touches that are included in the recreation for cadets.

“Part of the Army Cadet pro-gram is teaching cadets about Canadian military history,” Ire-dale said.

“Th e Ortona Dinner teaches them so much about the harsh realities of war, in all its complex-ities, by bringing the history to life with bits of history, memories of soldiers read out throughout the meal, and an empty table set in memory of fallen comrades adja-cent to the head table.”

Th e recreated meal – prepared by parent volunteers – is faithful to the original in most respects, except that the cadets are served root beer and candy sticks instead of the real things.

DeLorme Food Ser-vices supplied the roast pork. Th e DeLorme family has enjoyed a special and enduring relationship with Sea-forth cadets in Surrey and Langley, and were special guests.

Th e late John “Jack” DeLorme served with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and was one of the soldiers at the original Ortona dinner in 1943. His wife, Dor-

othy, is considered mother to the cadet corps.

Th e Royal Canadian Army Cadets is a federal program for young people aged 12 to 18 that develops leadership, good cit-izenship, and physical fi tness,

along with stimulating interest in the history and activities of the Canadian Army.

For more information on the free army cadet program in Lang-ley, visit the 2277 Corps website: www.2277rcacc.com.

Full moon risingTh ey’re calling it a Santa Moon,

and if you’re up early, you’ll get a chance to see it.

Th ere will be a full moon on Christmas day, something that hasn’t happened since 1977 – and won’t happen again until 2034, ac-cording to the Weather Network.

Star-gazers are advised to step out into the brisk morning air on Dec. 25 and turn to face the western horizon to see the full moon.

It should be visible throughout central and western Canada.

Th e exact moment is 6:12 a.m., EST, which puts it at 9:12 a.m. Pacifi c Standard Time.

Th e new year starts off with the Quadrantids meteor shower, which peaks on the night of Jan. 3/4 in the northeast sky.

Really, what’s to stress about? An editor’s inbox offers a veritable holiday buffet of issues to fret over in December

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Th at’s what the ads keep telling us, at

least.  And in many ways, it is.Th at is, until things blow up in your face

like some kind of faulty Christ-mas cracker.

I’m mercifully oblivious to most of the social conventions — the must-haves and the must-dos — that accompany the season for hard-core Christmas enthusiasts.

I don’t really understand, for example, why a woman being interviewed on the radio in mid-December placed her 1-10 holiday stress level at an 11 — too many viewings of Spinal Tap, maybe? — when mine is more like a 2.

Th ings will get done or they won’t; dinner might be amazing or simply edible; the cat might eat (and then puke up) chunks of decorative plastic foliage or she might not. (Spoiler: she will).

It helps to have a small family, with a uni-form mindset. We’re together, we’re eating too much, enjoying a few glasses of Christ-mas cheer, playing games and watching Cousin Eddie empty his chemical toilet into the Griswolds’ storm sewer for the ump-teenth time.

What’s to stress about?

Well, plenty, apparently. An editor’s inbox off ers a veritable holiday

buff et of issues you didn’t know you were supposed to be fretting over each December.

One that arrived last week warned of the pros and cons of “closet gift ing.”

Although I’m familiar with the practice — even a bit guilty of having employed it from time to time — I’d never actually heard the term.

Essentially, you buy generic items on sale all year long and store them in a closet until you need to produce a Christmas gift at the last minute.

When someone you hadn’t thought to buy for arrives bear-

ing gift s — voila! — you whip out a pre-pur-chased item and then act casual, like you’d been planning to give it to them all along.

It seems like the perfect solution — and honestly, it is.

For me, at least, it’s far less awkward to give a gift to someone who hasn’t recipro-cated than it is to be the one standing there with a present in hand and nothing to off er in return.

But it turns out a lot of people are off end-ed when they receive a gift that betrays a lack of thought or eff ort on the part of the giver.

One assumes the level of hurt feelings will vary according to the nature of the relation-ship.

A hastily wrapped box of chocolates from an acquaintance you see only a handful of times each year is a bit diff erent, obviously, than unwrapping a drug store-quality tree-top angel from your brother on Christmas morning, for example (true story).

It’s a situation we’d all love to avoid, but how, exactly, does that conversation go?

“Are we exchanging gift s this year?” can be an awkward lead-in, depending on whether it had occurred to the other party that it was even a consideration.

“Great, back to the mall on a Saturday. Th at’ll be fun.”

Like most of my friends, I don’t want or expect anything for Christmas this year.

If someone sees something small and thinks of me, lovely.  Meanwhile, I’ve got my eyes peeled for anything that might have special meaning to someone I know.

Maybe I’ll fi nd something, maybe not.Maybe someone will see something and

think of me, maybe not. It honestly doesn’t matter. You really want to give me a meaningful

gift this year? Be a dear and off er to clean up aft er the cat.

Operation Santa ClausWe recently received

the following story from a local reader. In the spirit of the season, we’re delighted to share it with you.

I sat silently, waiting expectantly, both my hands braced

on my cheeks. My head bobbing, and eyes closing, then opening. I wasn’t going to miss this moment.

My sisters and I had waited all year, and we were determined to see the person that made little children happy with gift s of joy.

“He does exist,” I thought. “Th ere was no way little Shanny Baker had her facts straight. He didn’t come to her house cause she was naughty not nice.”

Here we were, all seven of us cuddled to-gether, waiting, watch-ing. “Do you think he will bring Rudolf?” I asked one sister.

“Oh yes,” she squealed, then I shushed her: “Keep it down. We don’t want Santa to know we are

here. How do you think he fi ts down the small chimney?” I said. “He’s pretty fat, you know. I think he practices those exercises on sucking in his tummy, so he can slide down without getting stuck.”

“Did you make the cookies and put out the milk?” I asked another sister.

She said, “I got pretty hungry and thirsty while I was waiting, so I improvised. I put out bread and water.”

“Oh my God!” I exclaimed. “Santa will think he is visiting a prison.”

“Sorry,” she sighed. I patted her head

and told her it was the thought that counted. Besides, Santa didn’t come just for the cookies and milk. He came because he knew we were good all year – and we helped people. Yes, even disbeliever Shanny Baker.

“Santa and his elves got our names and will bring a nice gift to give us, cause, well, cause they think that we are

special – yeah – that we are special.”

“You think so?” My sister piped up. “No,” I said. “I don’t think so, I know so!”

“Did you write your letter to Santa like I told you to?” I asked the one sister that is great at procrastinating.

“Yes, I did,” she retorted.

“Did you mail it?”“Well,” she said, “I

meant to, but when I got to the store, I saw the ice cream cones and well, you know how

much I love rainbow ice cream.”

“Oh no!” I said as I clasped my head.

“Hopefully, he has a crystal ball out there and can see  how good you’ve been.”

“I sure hope so,” she sighed, or I am so S.O.L.”

“What?” I gasped.  “You know! Sorry,

Out of Luck. No pres-ents, nada, none, zilch, zip, zero.”

“Don’t worry,” I said,

“we will each give you one of ours.”

“What?” I heard in unison. “Give and you shall receive,

do unto others.” “Yeah,” one sister exclaimed,

“before they do unto you.” “Now, now,” I said, and gave

her that I am-so-disappointed-in-you look.

“How will we know him?” one sister said, almost asleep now.

I looked at her then said, “You know, he’s the guy in the red suit, the red suit with all the gift s. Th e one sneaking quietly around the tree.”

“How do you know he is not a burglar?” one sister chimed in.

“Not many burglars dressed in red, putting presents around the tree. Usually they are gath-ering them up.”

“Oh yeah,” she said, then leaned her head on the other sister’s shoulder and closed her eyes.

I knew I should have done this solo. I should have never let them in on Operation Santa Claus.

“Shush,” I said. “I think I hear something.”

All us girls sat up wide eyed, looking intently at the fi replace. We saw only the Christmas lights twinkling in the dark.

“Oh my God, I think it is

him!”“No,” my sister exclaimed.

“It can’t be him.  It can’t be midnight yet. I didn’t hear the clock strike twelve.”

“Maybe his watch is fast?” one sister whispered.

“Santa doesn’t wear a watch, you ninny,” another sister scolded.

“How do you know?”“Well, everyone knows that.

It is a well known fact. Did you ever see any books where San-ta was wearing a watch?”

“Not that I can remember,” she confessed. “Well, there you go, facts is facts.”

“Be quiet now, girls, we don’t want to scare him away.”

Here we sat, seven little girls dressed in fl annel, waiting,

watching, hoping to catch a glimpse of the All Famous San-ta Claus.

“What if he catches us?” my little sister whispered.

“He won’t.”“What did you tell Santa you

wanted?”“Peace in the world.” “Really???” she asked inno-

cently.“No, silly, I asked for a Bar-

bie doll with that nice outfi t she wears.  What did you ask for?”

“I asked him to give Daddy a good pair of gloves, so that his hands won’t get so cold when he changes all those tires in the cold.”

How selfi sh did I feel? “I wonder if I can revise the list I

gave to him. Do you think it is too late?”

We waited what seemed an eternity.  Each of us yawning, and rubbing our eyes, trying hard, trying real hard not to fall asleep. Not to miss that special moment. No, no, we can’t miss Santa Claus.

When I awoke, I was in my own bed, my sisters in theirs. I called out to them, and we all bounded downstairs like a heard of elephants.

My father was downstairs waiting for us to appear.  Th e gift s neatly wrapped, one gift each. Th at is all we could af-ford.  But that was plenty. We had one another and that is what really counts.

“Merry Christmas!” he shouted and we threw our arms around him, and in our excitement chimed, “Merry Christmas to you,” to Daddy.

“Did you see him, Daddy? Did you see him?”

“Who?” my father asked.  “Santa! Did you see Santa?”“Yes,” my father said. We

asked why he didn’t have a gift , and his reply was, “You, my dears, are the greatest gift I could ever ask for.”

Th ank you, Santa for all the wonderful people that were a part in my life, for that I am truly blessed.

To all a Merry Christmas, and to all a good night.

tive path aft er leaving government care at 19.

He’d only been on his own for a few weeks when he wound up on the streets, involved in drugs and turning to crime to support his habit.

If you’d asked him then about his future, he would have told you he’d be dead by 25, according to a youth worker he met from SOS BC.

In a brief, initial conversation, Alan was reminded that he’d once dreamed of going to university, getting a good job, owning a car and having a normal life. But he had no idea how to turn things around.

A chaotic childhood and adolescence where he bounced from one foster placement to the next – he fi gured it had been more than 50 –had left him without the most basic skills as an adult.

Today, he’s in a post secondary program, looking ahead to a

bright future.“I couldn’t have done

it without the people at SOS,” he says. “Th ey saved my life.”

Alan’s story has been shared as part of the 2015 appeal on behalf of the appeal.

To help, drop off or mail gift cards to 102-5830 176A Street, Surrey, B.C., V3S 4H5. Call 604-574-2964 to arrange for pick up. Guildford Mall, Walmart, and bus pass-es are needed most. To donate cash, visit sosbc.org/holidaychallengedo-nation.

Each year, more than 700 teenagers in foster care turn 19. An estimated 40 per cent of homeless youth have been in foster care, the society says.

Th ere are signs of progress in adding supports; there are now more than 10 colleges and universities letting former foster children enroll without worrying about tuition.

Th ere is also the Youth Futures Educa-tion Fund to help off set their living expenses.

So me and my mom decided that I could put it way up high on the shelf beside my bed. When my mom left I got a stool and put it on my bed and then I reached up and I grabbed my gingerbread train. Then I sat on my bed and started eating it cause my mom was not there. But then my mom came in and caught me. I looked at her and said “what I am hungrey for trains” then my mom started laughing. I think that was my favorite Christmas.

Quilts, carriages and timeFrank White’s title:

Th at Went By Fast: My First Hundred

Years, caught my at-tention in the Harbour Publishing book list. How true, I chuckled, and went in search of Frank White.

Turns out, I was 101 years too late. Frank died last October, but his words live on.

“When I was fi ft y and still had most of my marbles,” he wrote, “all people wanted me to tell them was why their car stalled at the intersection. Now that everything is starting to get hazy, they’re not satisfi ed unless I can tell them the meaning of life.”

A B.C. pioneer, ex-logger, and former gas-station owner, Frank published his second book at the age of 100. “Life is life,” he’s quoted as saying. “It’s not under our control and it doesn’t follow any script. It just is.” Frank, whom I never met and whose book I have yet to read, seemed like the perfect inspiration for a 2016 column. Carpe diem, tempus fugit, don’t put off until tomorrow, and all that jazz.

While travelling in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, the lifestyle of Old Order Mennonites inspired some con-templation. My 21st century gas guzzler zipped by their digni-fi ed black buggies and handsome horses. Th eir mission (in many cases) was tending the farm, running the family business, cherishing the showery autumn landscape. Community is valued, ostentation is frowned upon, and I’d have trouble adhering to the rigid rules of the faith. But, I envied their determination to resist the rat race.

Viola, a quilter and craft er, invited me to her traditional Wal-lenstein farm home in Posey Lane. She values her community and faith, but is an entrepre-neur at heart. Beyond her spotless kitchen, a bedroom overfl ows with stunning hand-made quilts, and assort-ed handmade toys and children’s clothes.

Stitches, tiny and even, are the hallmark of both traditional and new designs. Seam-stresses hoping to work for Viola must stitch a sampler to demonstrate their skill. Others bind these masterpieces. Each woman is skilled

in her own fi eld. Th e business operates by cash, cheque – no credit cards. She should have a website, but that con-travenes her strict com-munity rules. She also enjoys catering, but en-couraging commercial catering in her home is frowned upon. Home-made picnics help her remain observant while still indulging her business interests. It’s a fi ne line. Shyly her little granddaughter keeps a close eye on me, and follows us out to see the fl uffi est, fattest turkeys I’ve ever seen.

Driving is unaccept-able, so Viola is delight-

ed when transportation arrives to take her to the market.

Across the road, sur-rounded by lush fi elds and brilliant autumn colours, is Aaron Mar-tin Harness Ltd. Also, clearly traditional (but with a website), this is a man’s world. Pulling and show harnesses, brass bells, the distinc-tive orange signs for the back of Old Order buggies, collars for draft horses, and the re-assuring scent of good leather…and silence, dominates. It’s another world.

Walking the fi ne line between conforming, and non-conforming, seems possible, but carefully managed and monitored. Mennonite women and men run businesses in not-be-missed St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market in Cambridge. An elderly Mennonite farmer with brilliant blue eyes and an irresistible grin encourages me to sam-

ple local maple syrup from his trees. I prefer honey to maple syrup, I tell him. Sampling three diff erent weights, I begin to understand how these local syrups diff er. I’m converted – and better educated on the subject.

Photographing Old Order Mennonites in public is unacceptable, so visiting Th e Menno-nite Story, a museum tucked in among gift shops and restaurants in St. Jacobs village, was a helpful alterna-tive. Th is self guided tour and multi-media presentation gave me an insight into Men-nonite European roots, customs and faith.

Canada was their haven from persecu-tion. St. Jacobs County, Ontario, is among the areas respecting their old traditions. Like Frank White, they’ve come a long way in 100 years. Even at their horse and buggy pace though, time fl ies.

Perhaps the message on my journey was – hurry up…but, go slower.Ursula Maxwell-Lewis is a British Columbia writer and photographer ensuring her fi rst 100 years count

URSULA MAXWELL-LEWIS PHOTOThe lifestyle of Old Order Mennonites in Kitchener-Waterloo inspired some contemplation.

Dodging for a ClausBy Shana VanderarkTwenty teams, two gyms and

two buildings full of charity cheer.

Dodgeballs lined up on the centre line, players wearing their jingle bells, elf hats and holiday sweaters rush towards the balls to begin the battle.

With each dodge and throw of the ball, they are reminded of how grateful they are to have this opportunity to play, let alone raise money, for such a great cause.

On Dec. 9, the Surrey Dodge-ball League hosted its second annual Christmas Charity Tournament  at William of Or-ange and Forsyth Elementary. All participants had to wear hol-iday-themed ‘uniforms’ ranging from Santa hats and ugly sweat-ers, to vibrant holiday socks.

Surrey Dodgeball is an adult league consisting of members of the Surrey community. In 2014, the league raised over $4,700 for the Surrey Christmas Bu-reau to help low-income families celebrate the holiday season.

Th is year, the entry fee for the tournament, plus collections from the community, local busi-nesses, and personal contribu-tions raised $8,357. All money

raised will be contributed to the Surrey Christmas Bureau.

Th is year’s MVP (Most Valu-able Donator) honours were awarded to Joel Raun for raising $700 worth of items and to vol-unteer  Ryan Demelo who raised $4,240.

Th e Surrey Dodgeball League

was established in 2013 and en-compasses individuals from the Surrey community that are pas-sionate about athletics and the dodge.

For more information about the league and their upcom-ing schedule of events, visit Surreydodgeball.ca

Team Canada taps to bronzeA Team Canada tap troupe placed third in the

world at a recent international dance championship.Nearly two-dozen dancers from local studios

were on the junior and senior teams competing at the event, held in Riesa, Germany earlier this month.

Th e junior formation team performed Swing Set, earning them third place honours in their catego-ry at the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Tap Dance Championships.

Th e junior small group placed sixth and the ju-nior duo team of Jordyn Bietel and Kyla Fowler placed 16th at the event.

In adult competition, Team Canada’s adult for-mation team (“Th e Rockettes”) placed 7th, while the adult small group placed 12th.

Th e IDO is a world federation that includes more than 90 nations, representing 250,000 dancers on six continents.

5 IN MEMORIAM

IN LOVING MEMORY OFSHARON VANDENBRINKJune 10, 1956 - Dec 24 2013

We’ll never forget the moment you left us, no complaints as you braved the pain, quieter than it usually was, so

suddenly 2 yrs ago on Christmas Eve. And as we stood there in a state of shock, in denial and, unable to talk,

confused, frozen tears fell frommyself and Steve, and as you lay so

still, the air held no celebration of Christmas Bliss. Can’t help but think what didn’t I see, what was it I had missed, we still fi nd it all so hard

for us to believe.

As we recall this being your favourite time of year, beautiful memories we hold so close and dear. And missing

the way you cared & loved myself and Steve. We are grateful that the Lord took away your pain. And although

our hearts will ache until we’retogether again, we know you’re

watching over us, as we continue to grieve. And as we carry on with life

down here without you, we willforever cherish all the things you’d

say and do, as we send all our love to Heaven Today and Everyday
