Cloverly Elementary School PTA General Meeting Minutes 10/1/2013 Location: All Purpose Room, Cloverly Elementary School The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM Attendees: Louise Jackson, Bronson Hoover, Laura Reese, Roberta & Kai Gambale, Wendy Clfford, Meredith Holman, Amber Christensen, Thu Pham, Erica Dryden, Karen Raiallo, Ryan Raiallo, Tracie Holley, Rhondye Williams, Darcy Lane, Cheryl Minus, Nicole Gyapong, Rachael Sifri, Melissa Brunson, Atiya Malik, Natalie Chalmers, Shameen Anthanio Williams, Craig Zucher, Debbie Deosaran, Lauren Cronise, Monique Botkin, Shawn Forrest, Joe Samels. See Attachment 1. Approval of June Minutes: Motion to approve June minutes. Motion passed. Approval of September Minutes: Motion to approve September minutes. Motion passed. Introductions. President’s Report:
• 271 PTA members so far. • Staff Appreciation VERY successful!! • Switched from yahoo groups. Still problems with the new system.
Members may not have received their membership welcome email. • Please add [email protected] to your address book to assure
that you receive emails from the PTA. Principal’s Report:
• See attachments (2 and 3). Cloverly Elementary School Reading School Improvement Plan 2013-‐2014 and Cloverly Elementary School Math School Improvement Plan 2013-‐2014.
• Baldridge Student Improvement Plan. • Common Core Curriculum 2.0.
Large vocabulary component • MSA – based on old curriculum. This is the last year of MSAs. • Summer meetings to look at data with a drill down process to
determine what will have the greatest impact on our school. • Small group instruction with various opportunities to comprehend
text. • Discussion of Farms numbers. 11% of students are FARMs, which is
about 34 kids. What factors affect the numbers. • Pilot of new assessments start this year. • Equity Plan in place to pull small groups for focused instruction. Feel
that small group instruction is helping improve the numbers. • School demographics changing • Getting to know our Cloverly Community • Roll out of the new curriculum across the grades. • Emphasis on multiple ways to get the answer. • STEM is incorporated into the curriculum. • Equity vs. Equality • Culturally responsive teaching, parental involvement. • See Cloverly School Improvement Plan Actions (attachments 4 and
5). • Can students still do well even without the necessary background
knowledge. • K12 Gallup Survey (taken last Fall)
Focus on Hope, Well-‐Being, Engagement Well-‐Being results were slightly below county/national average. Plan to provide more tasks based on student’s individual interests/passions. Survey to be taken again this year. Results to be posted on the website.
• Safety. Fire-‐drills once a month • Access to school. Doors modified. Locked after 9AM. Opened during
lunch/recess. • Window/door bell added to doors where KidCo is located. • Facility officer shared among many schools. Elementary schools are
not assigned an officer just for them. Treasurer’s Report:
• Change of budget approval from Fall to Spring, so that the PTA can continue to write checks over the summer.
• Lavender Fundraiser has finished. • Board meeting in October to go over budget details • Discussion of an OPT-‐OUT (No Bake/Bake Sale) instead of holding
fundraisers. Just write a check.
Committee Reports: MCCPTA Delegate/Cluster Coordinator – Cheryl Minus
• Could use one more delegate from Cloverly • Meeting was held 9/24 • Standard rules • Operating budget • CIP (Capital Improvement Planning) budget • Opportunity to make suggestions for the 2015 Operating budget. • CIP includes A/C, building issues, new roof (last year) • Testimony will be 11/14 • MCCPTA membership contest. We won last year. PTA with biggest
jump in membership. • Cluster Coordinator. Meet and Greet for principals and PTA’s in our
cluster.
Fundraising • Identify what programs the PTA pays for. • Make a direct appeal • 462 students, 100 orders returned for the current fundraiser • Please email other fundraising ideas to Bronson. • Last year Spring Fair brought in approximately $7,000.00 and the
coupon book brought in about $2,000.
NAACP • SOME (So Others May Eat) 11/10 preparing/serving lunch at
homeless shelter. (must be 12 or older) • Put contact info on website (SOME). • SOME also does clothing donation, food pantry, senior services.

Upcoming Events: • High School start times Meeting 10/8 • Farquhar MS meeting 10/9 • Ice Skating. 11/2 • Book Fair 10/14 • Academic Night 10/15 and 10/16
New Business / Open Forum:
• Possible fundraising idea. School Tool Box – school supplies at an 8% discount. More info to follow.
• Classrooms are still in need of the “optional” items. Kleenex, hand sanitizer, pencils
• Would like a calendar on website that had all “events” posted.
