PRESIDENT’S CORNER

With spring time about us, let us think about more ways to serve our community. Just with the last few weeks, Detroit Kiwanis No. 1 members volunteered at Arts and Scraps with Circle K members, Kids Against Hunger meal packaging, participated at IHOP Pancake Day providing funds to The Children’s Miracle Network, DenCap book stickering and shared a reading experience at Munger Elementary School for March is Reading Month with Dencap giving 300 books and 35 Dr. Seuss books given by us through the Charlevoix Builders Club. Lots of service these last number of weeks. Mark your calendars for our International Service Day, Saturday, April 2nd. We will be back at the Salvation Army to make and deliver sandwiches to our families in the Detroit Community. Whenever we do Service it is important to wear your Kiwanis wear to show and make our community who we are. Also, wear your Kiwanis wear wherever you go. People will ask you about it and this is a wonderful way to begin your 1 minute elevator speech about what Kiwanis is and why you joined our service organization. Saturday, April 16, 2016 is our Spring Divisional. PLEASE plan on attending. It will be at DeCarlo’s in Warren. $25.00 is the cost.

See the attached flyer at the end of this newsletter. You may send your money in with the form or give to me at our next meeting, April 5th and we can mail it in together. We usually have about 8-10 Detroit members. This will be an opportunity to see the awards we have achieved this year, do service and also have an Interclub. Think of new members that may want to become a member. Inviting them to a service event is a wonderful opportunity for them to see what our Kiwanis Club is all about. I am very appreciative of all the work our members are doing to help the community. We are getting back with more involvement with our community. I want to thank each and every one of our members for all you do!

CLUB MEETINGS

March 1st: Selina Johnson, founder and President of Hollywood Golf shared inspiring stories of how children as young as three years of age can learn golf. Over time, she has instroduced over 4000 children and youth to the game. But not only do they learn the game, but they learn valuable lessons on collegiality, good sportsmanship and how to be strong, productive adults. Since 1983, Selina has taken her students to 20 states to witness such exclusive golf tournaments such as the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and The Masters. UPCOMING MEETINGS April 5th: Speaker: Ed Deeb, Founder and CEO of Michigan Youth Appreciation Foundation April 19th: Speaker: Greg Roberts, Waye County Executive’s Office May 3rd: Speaker: Anthony Brogdan, “The Great Detroit” Filmmaker and Producer May 17th: Speaker: Brittini Kellom, Founder and Executive Director of “Just Speak Incorporated”

books for kids

The books for kids project is almost completely moved into the new warehouse on Milwaukee. Thanks to Joe Sr. and Joe Jr. for overseeing this hard work.

On February 27th, the warehouse was open for book distribution. Over 7,200 books were distributed to almost 20 organizations. Sheila Connolly, Kris Miranne and grandson Caleb and Lucas Wright joined our new committee co-chairs, Lena and Mike Webb. We were also ably assisted by volunteers from City Year who did a great job helping out, including cleaning the floor! Just in case you don’t know the Webbs, here is a photo from our 101st Kiwanis birthday event.

COUNTING UP SERVICE HOURS

Secretary Kris Miranne has begun tabulating service hours from our various volunteer activities. She will coordinate with Thom Mann, our service committee chair, but feel free to email her with your hours ([email protected]). She has hours from February forward but if you were involved in any service project from October 2015 through January, let her know.

This is important for our monthly report to Kiwanis International and can lead to an individual President’s Award as well!

HELPING HANDS AKTION CLUB

Cupid was hovering overhead as Aktion Club members spent time making lovely Valentine’s Day cards for friends, family and those special ones in their lives.

In March, club members enjoyed a lunch out at Honest John’s in Detroit. Looks like everyone had a great time.

KIWANIS OUT AND ABOUT

Wow… our club was sure busy in February and March with various volunteer activities. We have more planned, in particular, our partnering with the Salvation Army for the Bed and Bread truck. See details later in this newsletter.

Arts and Scraps

On February 13th, Marian O’Higgins and Lucas Wright joined with Wayne State University’s Circle K club for a Saturday volunteer event at Arts and Scraps.

KIDS AGAINST HUNGER

On March 5th, volunteers at the Grosse Pointe Memorial church packaged 75,000 meals. Several members of our club worked the noon to 2 PM shift. Those participating included: Sheila Connolly, Pat DeCarlo, Marian O’Higgins, Kris Miranne, Gloria Smart and Karen Walker. Kris brought her husband Rodney and grandsons Caleb and Desmond. Just a reminder that many of our volunteer events welcome kids and spouses/friends. How better to teach the importance of service to the next generation of potential Kiwanians?

IHOP Fundraising

On March 8th, we helped raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Customers at the

Jefferson Avenue IHOP enjoyed free pancakes while we introduced Kiwanis and the project to diners. Members who helped out included Vernita Beverly, Sheila Connolly, Marcia Ford, Barbara Jean Johnson, Marian O’Higgins and Kimme Reed.

We also had an Interclub with New Center who met at the restaurant for their meeting while also participating in the fundraiser.

Dr. Seuss and Kids

On March 9th, several of our club members were at Munger Elementary school in Detroit to celebrate March’s Reading Month. We donated over 300 books from our books for kids project. We also brought Dr. Seuss books that had been donated to our club from the Builders Club in Charlevoix. Shown are Beverly Wiggins, Marian O’Higgins, Jeanette Harris, Karen Walker and volunteer Cynthia Johnson along with the school principal. Everyone wore their robes because it was a PJ party!

The FORMULA Summit

From March 11th – 13th, Marian O’Higgins and six others from Michigan were invited to the FORMULA summit in St. Louis focusing on club strengthening. Lots of work but some fun too.

What matters most to you about Kiwanis? What do you love? Now, who do you want to share it with? The Formula is an opportunity for Kiwanians to shape the future of their clubs and the service that impacts their communities.

Marian will be sharing lessons learned

Circle K Convention

Marian O’Higgins attended the 61st Annual Michigan Circle K District Convention held the weekend of March 19th – 20th. Here attendees are participating in one of our favorite service projects: packaging food for Kids against Hunger.
