Regional Coordinator’s CornerHappy 2012!

What an unusual “winter” we have been having with temperatures ranging from low 30s to upward of 60. I hope that you have all been taking advantage of the cold days to work on those UFP’s and Round Tuits that you have. I have been working on my Corner Store and am excited that it is about 50% done. My grandson and I have been working on a Raven’s room for his Raven’s room. That is one of those UFP’s that we work on when he visits.

If you thought 2011 was a great “mini” year, 2012 looks to be even better!First of all, we have a new NAME club in Region E-1, Northern Maryland area. Do Drops on Roses, although not a new club, has now been registered as a NAME Club. Congratulations and welcome!

Secondly, there are some exciting events coming up. Of course many of you have signed up for Maryland State Day in April. We still have a few slots left, however now that time is getting short; the spaces are starting to fill rapidly. Thirdly, there is the October 6th NAME Day, “The Alcove,” which will be a great addition to your room box or as a standalone piece. It will be available in 3 scales: 1”, ½”, and ¼”. There will be more about that in upcoming issues of the Tattler.

High on a lot of our agendas is the upcoming NAME Convention in Charlotte. Romaine was there in January and said that the Hotel will be completely renovated by the time we are there in July, so get your reservations in early. There are loads of workshops that sound like fun and, of course, there are the ever popular Round Tables and Silent Auctions that cause us all to think and re-think what we just “have to have.” Don’t forget the garage sale! I have found some really neat “treasures” there. Oh, my, and that SALES ROOM!… Whew! I am getting excited just thinking about it. I tend to make a list of the things that I am working on (or maybe planning to work on) so that I have specific items in mind like more items for my nearly completed Corner Store.

We are working on finalizing the date for our yearly yard sale. We will let your club presidents know the date and the particulars in the next month. We will get flyers ready for the Delaware Miniatures sale in March. That seems to be the only Miniatures sale in our area this spring.

I am personally looking forward to seeing you at any or all of the projected events for 2012.

Also, I would like to have a time to visit each club in the Region this year, so if you will send me a particular date that you would like a visit, please do so. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you.Have a great Spring!

… From the Northern VA State Reps…

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

Virginia State Day 2013Save the Date ~ Virginia State Day is April 13, 2013. Please keep a lookout for more information in future issues of the Tiny Tattler.

Yard Sale - VirginiaPlease note that the Yard sale hosted by VME that was listed in the calendar part of the last Tiny Tattler issue was an error. To date we do not have a host. If anyone is interested please contact us.

George & Donna

… From your Maryland State Rep…

I don't know about you guys, but I am so excited about our upcoming Maryland State Day event on April 27 & 28.  I just love the Baltimore Corner Store!  It’s such a historically interesting symbol of our State.  The Corner Store will look great next to your 2006 Baltimore Row House or as a stand-alone piece. You should see what Nancy Martin did to marry hers together! In addition to our usual surprises, we hope to have a couple of technique stations to create some special effects for your Corner Store.

For our program line up, we will have vendors (ten at last count), a silent auction (donations from our miniature community), door prizes (from our vendors and other quality craftsmen), lunch, exhibits, tote bag favors, and of course we always have a few surprises.  Round tables on Friday evening will, of course, offer items to help inspire a theme for your own Corner Store.

We will be back at the Elks Lodge in Frederick, so there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the company of our miniature community.  Hope to see you there… it sounds like fun!

Mary

…And Highlights from the NAME Board…

Some of you may remember the “Houseparty in the Miniature Gazette” in the Winter 1997 issue.  It was NAME's 25th birthday, so the Houseparty (“Silver Memories”) was a celebration of NAME. The Houseparty was essentially a paper Houseparty, and everyone who wanted to participate could easily do so.

We are having another Houseparty in the May/June 2013 issue of the Miniature Gazette.  The title of this Houseparty is "Over the Hill Retreat."  The committee is formed and already working to make this a successful event for all members of NAME.  A lot has happened since the 1997 issue, and we hope to make it even bigger and better than the first one.

One of the first things we are suggesting is that you consider planning this Houseparty similar to the NAME Day events.  Wherever possible, groups get together to have a Houseparty locally without the

expense of travel, hotel and multiple meals.  I think this is enough of a teaser for now.

You can read more about the Gazette Houseparty in each issue of the Miniature Gazette, starting with the May/June 2012 issue.  One year later, in a special May/June 2013 issue of the Gazette, the Houseparty will be published in preparation for the events you can hold during the months of August & September, with all the information you will need to have your own Houseparty!

The "SPRING FLING" NAME Auction will be held in MAY 2012. The exact dates haven’t been announced yet, but plans are in the works with over 100 items already being carefully packed.

An article in an upcoming Miniature Gazette will announce the future plans of auctions and estate giving/planning.

YOU MADE IT HAPPEN …and I thank you! I will soon be able to tell you where the money raised will be used, as part one especially being our educational programs. You soon are going to hear of exciting news about NAME!

Resources of Instructors for Clubs: We are beginning to organize a list of miniaturists who are willing to act as instructors for clubs in our region. If you would like to be included in this listing, please contact Olivia Beard-Wall. Of special interest is learning techniques for all skill levels. Other workshop instructors are encouraged to also contact Olivia. [email protected]

NOTICE to Regional Team Members & Club Presidents:

We have started a new Regional Team Members and Club President’s site on Yahoo. It is by invitation only. If you have gotten the invitation and haven’t yet signed up, make sure you do so now. It will be a great tool to have for keeping in contact with each other. We are planning to have live chats to discuss concerns, to share new projects, and to conduct our Club Presidents meeting. This will be in place of the face-to- face get-togethers where each of us would have to drive long distances to meet.

The site will also include forms and information as to whom they get sent and when. There will be a calendar which lists events, suggested activities for you and your clubs, discussions on membership, new clubs starting in your area, and whatever else you would like to discuss.

If you have problems getting into the site once you receive your invitation, please contact Olivia at [email protected].

NAME Elections Reminder:

NAME Elections are coming soon! Candidates for elected offices are appearing in the March/April issue of Miniature Gazette. Please take this seriously and cast your vote! If you are not familiar with some of

the candidates, feel free to contact your State Rep or Regional Coordinator for information about them. Remember… you get 5 points on your AIM form for participating in the election process.

Wee Friends Club

The Wee Friends Miniature Club has members from the central Maryland Region, including Annapolis, Bowie, Harwood and Potomac.  Currently, the club has 14 members and welcomes new ones.  We meet about one Friday every month at various members’ houses.  The past year has been an exciting year for the Wee Friends Miniature Club.  In September we had a workshop, led by Joanne Roberts, to dress a doll.  Each attendee completed their doll and the end products were amazing.  The in October, we displayed the dolls, together with other dolls that we owned (designed by Joanne Roberts) in the display case of the children’s section at the Bowie Library. The display was very popular, as was evident by numerous small hand prints on the display case.

The Wee Friends Holiday Party was a pot-luck luncheon on January 20, 2012.  There were nine members attending.  Each member made or selected 10 mini gifts to exchange.  We all anticipated and enjoyed opening our mini-gifts.  After our luncheon, we planned activities for 2012, including a field trip to our local miniature shop “Forever Friends,” to celebrate the club’s 27th Anniversary.  This coming year should prove to be exciting with our Third Annual Day Camp in March, where members will have a chance to finish unfinished larger projects during a dedicated weekend.  Other workshops are planned for 2012, including one on making mini-linens and another making a Mardi-Gras mask.

Miniatures Exhibition Open February 9 to May 1…at Alexandria Black History Museum

Creators of Dollhouses Inspired by Alexandria's African American History

The Alexandria Black History Museum welcomes a new exhibition, “Our Alexandria: African American Dollhouses.” by Sharon J. Frazier and Linwood M. Smith. Featuring more than a dozen buildings and rooms in miniature, most inspired by real places in Alexandria, this exhibition will run from February 9 through May 1.

Sharon Jones Frazier and Linwood M. Smith, both lifetime residents of Alexandria, began working together on their collection in 1994, combining their talents and drawing on their memories of places and people in Alexandria. Mrs. Frazier, a retired registered nurse, developed skills in miniaturization while Mr. Smith, a retired automotive mechanic, used his skills as a craftsman to construct dollhouses to scale. They first exhibited at the Alexandria Black History Museum in 2008.

This exhibition is composed of new works including the Carver Nursery School, Robert Robinson

Library, and the Hayden Photography Studio. Several of the buildings from the earlier and very popular exhibition also return, including a barbershop and hair dressing salon, a medical building, an attorney’s office and a florist. All are patterned after actual businesses in the Parker-Gray community, a historically African-American neighborhood in Alexandria.

The Alexandria Black History Museum is located at 902 Wythe Street in the heart of the Parker-Gray Historic District and is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Suggested museum admission is $2. To learn more about the museum and Alexandria’s rich African-American heritage, please visit www.alexblackhistory.org or call 703-746-4356.

The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death

Frances Glessner Lee

Was it suicide, or murder? ~ Eighteen miniature death-scene dioramas

There is a miniature community of horrors on the third floor of the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office. A display of 18 exquisitely crafted models of actual crime scenes presents grisly vignettes of violent death.

The models were made in the 1940s by Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy, eccentric Chicago woman who had been raised on Sherlock Holmes tales and had a lifelong fascination with sleuthing. Lee is reputedly the inspiration for the character of Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote.

In 1931, Lee gave $250,000 to establish the nation’s first department of legal medicine at Harvard Medical School, and she created the models for use in its forensic pathology program.

She called her models the “Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death,” after the saying in forensic pathology that an investigation’s purpose is to “convict the guilty, clear the innocent, and find the truth in a nutshell.”

The studies were based on actual crime scenes, reconstructed from photographs, sketches and statements by witnesses and police. Only names and revealing details were changed. The dollhouse-like models are designed on a scale of one foot to one inch, perfectly proportioned for an investigator six inches tall.

She was neurotic about detail,” says curator Sian B. Jones, who refurbished and cleaned the models with her partner, Margaret Craft.

8

Page 9: Club Corner - NAME Region E-1 Tattler - Spring 2012.doc  · Web viewFeaturing more than a dozen buildings and rooms in miniature, most inspired by real places in Alexandria, this

The models contain details beyond the range of view, glimpsed through mirrors or discovered only by taking the displays apart. One scene includes a victim near the door of a tavern. Behind that door — even though you can’t see it — is an entire bar. In other models it would have been effective simply to paint the objects visible through windows, such as neighboring houses and backyards with gardens. But even the background details are three-dimensional models.

After Lee's death in 1962, the models were acquired by the Maryland Medical Examiner’s office and are still used as training tools.

Hours By appointment only. While one of the Nutshell Studies is featured in the lobby of the Medical Examiner's office, the others can be viewed on the third floor, but interested parties must write for permission.  They can address inquires to Dr. David Fowler, MD, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 111 Penn Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Cost Free.

“At Night in the Museum”www.2013Tucsonhouseparty.org

N-1 is hosting the 2013 NAME National Convention in Tucson, Arizona and the committee is hard at work organizing and making plans to insure this convention will be special and memorable.

Let’s start with the memorable part. Every registered attendee will have the exciting experience of visiting the fabulous “Mini Time Machine” Miniature Museum founded by long time NAME members Pat and Walter Arnell.

We are planning on changing things up a little with some fresh new ideas and a little bit different schedule to make it a more pleasant experience. In order to supplement the meager budget that is allotted for each convention and to keep registration fees low, the committee needs to do some intensive “Fundraising.”

We have set up a website to promote the convention, give you news about our plans as they develop (without giving away any secrets or surprises) and to advertise our Fundraisers and Raffles. Check us out at www.2013tucsonhouseparty.org.

14

One great fundraiser that you can look forward to is a “Display Box” that is designed to hold the convention souvenirs. Details are on the website. Raffles are planned at least every two months or more. Wonderful and exciting items have been donated for these Raffles.

We are looking for a Chair for the following Committees: Souvenir Book and Publicity.

We would like to remind all the dealers and instructors that we are looking for new and exciting classes and merchandise to offer our guests at the convention. So do not hesitate to submit your applications to teach or sell. We would love to get some new faces in these categories.

Please visit our website, contact us with any questions or let us know if you wish to volunteer orparticipate in anyway.

Thank you for your time.
