The Union has negotiated a special rate for all of its clubs which subscribe to BT Sport in the coming season. This deal comes as BT Sport expands its live sport offering with a new package called BT Sport Total which incorporates the new channel BT Sport Europe alongside BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and BT Sport ESPN. BT Sport Europe includes all of the live UEFA Champions League and Europa League games, a total of 223 games this season. This expanded content means that BT Sport Total will cost more but its live European games will kick off on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and will not be available on terrestrial TV, meaning they have the potential to drive footfall into the clubs which take up the subscription during the traditionally quieter midweek periods. The CIU has also negotiated a loyalty discount for those clubs which signed up to BT Sport in their first two seasons. There is also a BT Sport 1 package available to clubs which still includes BT Sport’s live coverage of the Barclays Premier League (38 games), Scottish Premiership (30 games) and Aviva Premiership Rugby (69 games). NEWS

It is with much sadness that Monmouthshire Branch announces thatlong-time Secretary Jim Harrison passed away in May.

Jim dedicated many years to club administration, beginning in1970 when he joined the committee of Pentywynmawr, laterbecoming Secretary for a six-year period.

He subsequently served as Chairman of the club for a number ofyears before stepping down in 2001. In 1985 Jim joinedMonmouthshire Branch as an Executive Member and in 2000 becamethe Secretary of the Branch, succeeding Baden Tucker in the role.

His involvement with the Branch saw him devote a huge amount of time and energy intoguiding clubs in the right direction and if he didn’t have the answer to a problemimmediately, he would not rest until he had found the solution.

Jim also served on the NEC for five years and loved his time attending meetings inLondon and using his vast experience of club administration to help shape the Union’sfuture at a National level.

His passions were the CIU, music and above all, his wife and family. He loved spendingtime with his grandchildren and was a real family man.

Jim fell ill in March 2015 and spent 10 weeks in hospital before passing away on May 26. Awell-respected gentleman, he will be sadly missed by everyone associated with him.

OBITUARY: JIM HARRISONEdwin WoollardEdwin (Eddie)Donald Woollard, who passed awayon June 4 at theage of 88, was astalwart of the domino and crib teams at MarchUnited Services Club in Norfolk.

A new exhibition celebrating the people, history and heritage of Guide Post SocialClub is being held at Woodhorn Museum& Northumberland Archives until October.

The Share tells the story of the cultureand history of social clubs through acollection of original memorabilia – fromthe ledger started at the club’s firstcommittee meeting in 1901 to a currentmembership pack including club rule bookand share certificate - alongside new workfrom artists in residence and members ofGuide Post Social Club.

Curator Andrea Hawkins explains, “TheShare has two meanings – when youbecome a member you buy a share in theclub, but it also describes how this projectwould not have been possible without thepeople and artists who’ve shared theirtime, their stories and their skills.

“Members’ voices come through inletters and memorabilia, as well as in thework they’ve created with our artists inresidence. Working with artists is aninteresting way for people here to thinkabout who they are, their identity and theirrelationship to the club.”

Andrea worked with the club for 18months, first pitching the idea at a meetingwith around 20 CIU clubs in the Blythdistrict asking for volunteers.

Guide Post Socilal Club Treasurer JoyceWatts and Chair John Watts came forwardand a committee of volunteers workedwith Andrea and artists includingceramicist Emilie Taylor and photographerMik Critchlow to make a difference intheir local community.

As well as photos taken over a 10-monthperiod, ceramic mugs made by membersof the club are also on display.

CLUB OF THE MONTH

CAERPHILLY SOCIAL CLUB Regular entertainment, live sport, a well-run bar and superb facilities all ensure that Caerphilly SocialClub in South Wales remains a flourishing focal point for its members and the local community

s you walk into the entrance lobbyof Caerphilly Social Club in SouthWales, you’re left in no doubt that

this is a flourishing club. As well as posters bearing all the

upcoming live sporting fixtures showing inthe club’s Sports Bar, there are also details ofthe club’s many social events and regularentertainment nights.

No wonder then that the club – situatedjust at the bottom of the town centre next toCaerphilly’s main shopping area – remains afocal point of the community with a 1,500-strong membership and fantastic, modernfacilities.

Boasting a forward-thinking andhardworking committee, led by ChairmanIan Carter, Treasurer Alan Chandler andSecretary Jeff Askey, Caerphilly SC attractsmembers and guests through its doors allthrough the week with activity peaking atweekends when the club’s entertainment, live sports offering, skittle alley, two snookertables and well-priced bar really drivefootfall.

“There’s something on at the clubvirtually every day,” explains Secretary JeffAskey. “Bingo is really popular with our

members and we have several sessionsspread across the week alongside otherevents.

“On Monday nights we have a bingosession plus a solo singer. On Wednesdayswe have an organist who plays in the SportsBar for a ‘singalong session’. Wednesday isalso skittles night and we run five teams –both male and female – who will either beplaying in our skittle alley or playing anaway fixture. There’s a winter league andsummer league so it’s year round which isgreat for bar takings. Our ‘Philly Bs’ teamhas just won the Whitchurch & DistrictLeague title so we’re very competitive as aclub.”

There’s a further bingo session from 8-11pm on Thursday night while on Friday,it’s Disco Night at Caerphilly SC. The clubhas been running this night for some 40years and it’s really well known in the area.Indeed, this is the club’s biggest crowd-pullerdrawing in up to 400 people on a weeklybasis, all eager to strut their stuff on thedancefloor.

“It’s a great night,” says Jeff. “It’s very wellknown in the town and we get all ages –from 19 to 74 – enjoying themselves. We

have SIA doormen supervising entry sopeople know they can come in and have areally good time in a friendly, safeatmosphere.”

On Saturday, there are two further bingosessions and a live band playing classic coverversions from the 60s and 70s.

Sundays see an early afternoon bingosession followed by a performance from afour-piece band with members getting up toprovide vocals. To round off a packed weekof activity, there’s a final bingo session onSunday night.

A busy programme then but the club’sexcellent facilities ensure that it can cater forlots of different tastes at the same time. Theclub’s Concert Hall can accommodate amaximum of 400 while the upstairs LoungeBar has just been refurbished.

“We spent £33,000 on the refurb and itnow looks really smart with new carpet, newflooring in the bar area and new furniturethroughout,” says Jeff.

“Downstairs we have the Sports Bar withsix 42-inch televisions and live sport is veryimportant for the club. We have fullpackages with Sky Sports and BT Sport andmultiple boxes so we can show whatever our

CLUB OF THE MONTH

members want to see – rugby, football, cricket, golf, even the Tour de France. Ifthere’s a clash of fixtures, we can show oneevent on some screens and another on theother screens.

“We’re expecting the Rugby World Cup tobe a big draw in September and October –especially with Wales playing England in thepool stages!

“We also have the two racing channels –At The Races and Racing UK – and thosework really well for us throughout the week. It’s a major cost to have all the live sport butit’s worth it for us.

“We have a car park for 40 vehicles andthat’s a real benefit as you’ll get non-members signing in as guests and coming infor a drink while they’re shopping.

“What used to be the main entrance toour building many years ago has beenconverted into a Coral betting shop so webenefit from that two-fold. First, we rent thespace to Coral on a ten-year lease and wealso get the passing trade from the shop.People will park up, have a quick bet andthen come into the club to watch the racingin our Sports Bar and have a drink.

“On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, people will often fill in a betting slip in thebar and then nip into the betting shopwhich is just 20 yards away and then comeback and see the race.”

The club has also built up a reputation forthe quality of its bar offering underStewardess Sian Stallard. “Sian has been withus for ten years and really knows the ins and

outs of the club and runs everythingfantastically well. When someone walks upto the bar she’ll know what they’re havingbefore they do!

“We’ve had a contract with Heineken forthe past ten years and we work really wellwith them. We have a contract that’s fixedon price for two years. Our drinks priceshaven’t actually increased for four years.

“A pint of Heineken is £2.26, John Smith’sis £2.30 and Foster’s is £2.60 – all great valuefor the area. We really pride ourselves on thequality of our beer and excellent, friendlyservice.”

That friendly service ensures that coachparties are always welcome. “We have oneregular coach party from Swansea who goracing at Newbury and then pop into theclub on the way back for refreshmentsbefore they head home.

“We also have a group of senior citizensfrom Swansea who have been coming to theclub every September for the past ten yearsas part of their annual coach outing toCaerphilly Castle.”

Jeff explains that the club is always willingto allow community groups and charities touse its handsome facilities for no charge:“We recently hosted an event for a localgymnastic club who couldn’t find anywherebig enough to accommodate their event.

“One of the coaches is a member here andwe arranged for them to use our ConcertHall. In the end, there were about 200 adultsand children and the event went really well, with the result that they’re returning for

another event in September. It was a greatopportunity to showcase the club to newpotential members as many of them didn’teven know that we existed before they camethrough the doors.”

Charity events are also central toCaerphilly Social Club and they remaincommitted to raising funds for the VelindreCancer Hospital.

Jeff explains: “A member with cancer wastreated there so we decided to nominate it asour main charity.

“We recently ran an event on a Sundayafternoon which raised £5,000. We had ourusual Sunday afternoon band playing butthis time they donated their fee and it wasreally well supported by our members.

“Heineken and several other companiesand individuals donated items for auction –we had tickets to rugby, football and theAshes, signed rugby shirts and a set of golfclubs – so it went really well. We’re hoping tohold another event for the Velindre appealbefore Christmas.”

All in all, the custodians of CaerphillySocial Club should be extremely proud oftheir continuing success. “Our bank balanceis very healthy and the club is doing wellwith a turnover of £700,000 so there’s areally positive feeling about the club,” saysJeff.

“In the local area, four clubs have closedin the past few years which is a real shame,so we’re really happy that we’ve managed tobuck the trend and continue to be such akey part of the local community.”

HQ – THE LATEST FROM HEAD OFFICE

July 8, 2015 saw the release of the SupremeCourt decision in the longstanding disputebetween HMRC and Rank in respect of theVAT treatment of income generated fromgaming machines and the request by Rankfor repayment of VAT declared on gamingmachine income.

The initial argument made by Rank in2006/2007 was that takings from onegaming machine should not be treateddifferently, from a VAT perspective, to thetakings from another machine – where theprinciple of ‘fiscal neutrality’ had beenconfirmed by the European Courts ofJustice in the case of Edith Linneweber.

Initially the Courts found in favour ofRank and many clubs received repayment ofthe moneys claimed together with interest.

More recently HMRC changed theirargument and sought to rely upon the factthat they had incorrectly treated somegaming machines as being exempt from VATwhere in fact the law had required thisincome to be subject to VAT at the standardrate.

Having won agreement from the Court ofAppeal HMRC then proceeded to requestrepayment from all clubs that had receivedrepayments, together with further interest.

The final decision on this matter was leftto the Supreme Court, which somewhatsurprisingly, in the eyes of many, found infavour of HMRC.

At this stage HMRC will consider thatthey have been successful, however Rankand other operators in the gaming industryhave further cases to litigate which means

the argument about fiscal neutrality andgaming machines is far from over and thereremains a chance that clubs will receiverepayments.

What this decision means to clubs:• At this moment HMRC have no reason

to repay moneys they originally repaidand then recovered, but there remains thepossibility that they may have to do so

• Claims made for periods prior to 1996will not be repaid as the machines thatremain to be considered were not inexistence at that time, so all machinestreated as being exempt from VAT weretreated incorrectly

• Linneweber 2 claims remain valid andwe understand further test cases are beingprepared

At this stage clubs are not required to doanything further, HMRC will continue topursue repayment of the amounts theyinitially repaid in Linneweber 1 and rejectany Linneweber 2 claims.

If clubs have not made a claim in respectof Linneweber 2 or have not ‘topped up’their claim until 31 January 2013 when VATon machine income was abolished andMGD came into existence, they shouldconsider whether they wish/need to do so.

Supreme Court makes judgement on Linneweber 1

The Supreme Courtrecently found in favourof HMRC regarding VAT

payments on gamingmachine income

Full progamme is now finalised for HQ Branch Secretary event taking place in October The next Branch Secretary event, which willbe held on October 5-6, will offer anotheropportunity for Branch Secretaries to visitHead Office and discuss a range of issueswhich affect the clubs under their charge.

month?

While a great many of us often give to thecharities of our choice at some pointduring the year, the summer months seeus usually enjoying our holidays. Or maybecatching up on those D.I.Y projects aroundour homes, especially if the weather isrelatively good and we can get outside.

July is the month our gardens bloom andwe have our holidays booked. Some arelucky and go abroad to seek the sea andthe sunshine, others plan family trips outor go around the countryside witheveryone eager to get out and have fun.

However, for some life is not sopredictable. Recently, I saw a documentaryfeaturing former TV actors who have fallenon hard times. This was not due to theiracting ability but rather there being a lackof work for them. Two of the peopleinterviewed are now homeless and havelost everything.

This was a story about people in dire needand it made me think how the WMCIUclubs can reach out and perhaps offersome help to those in any local communitywho may be finding themselves indistress.

I have already expressed a great need forfood to be collected regularly and donatedto the local food banks. Could your cubs domore? Consider perhaps hosting a‘’Benefits Day’’ where Games, Storytelling,Face Painting and FREE ICE CREAM areserved to families with children onbenefits.

Or volunteer to have a ‘’Senior Day’’ at theclub once in a while. Many elderly peopleare living on fixed incomes. You can teamup with your local Age Concern and thelocal police, as well as inviting othervendors along to make this a fun andinformative community event.

We would also love to hear from ourreaders on this issue. Share your ownclub’s ideas by emailing me at:[email protected]
