General Informations

What is

?Rotary International is a volunteer organization of business and

professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help

to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately

1.2 million Rotary club members belonging to 35,000 Rotary clubs

in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary celebrated 100 years of service

in 2005. The Rotary Foundation has awarded more than US$2.1

billion in grants, which are administered at the local level by Rotary

clubs.

What is the purpose of Rotary?

Rotary clubs exist to improve communities through a range of

humanitarian, inter cultural and educational activities. Clubs

advance international understanding by partnering with clubs in

other countries. Rotary also encourages high ethical standards in

all vocations.

What do Rotary clubs do?

Rotary clubs address critical issues at home and abroad by

providing health care and medical supplies, clean water, food, job

training, youth development, and education to millions of people

in need. Examples of Rotary's focus areas include:

Polio Eradication : In 1985, Rotary International created PolioPlus

– a program to immunize all the world's children against polio. To

date, Rotary has contributed more than US$1 billion and countless

volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children

in 122 countries. Rotary is currently working to raise an additional

US$200 million toward a US$355 million challenge grant from the

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These efforts are providing much

needed polio vaccine, operational support, medical personnel,

laboratory equipment and educational materials for health

workers and parents. In addition, Rotary has played a major role in

decisions by donor governments to contribute over $6 billion to

the effort. With its community-based network worldwide, Rotary is

the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to

eradicating polio. Rotary volunteers assist in vaccine delivery,

social mobilization and logistical help in cooperation with the

national health ministries, the World Health Organization (WHO),

UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Peace – In an effort to educate tomorrow's peacemakers and

ambassadors, up to 110 Rotary World Peace Fellows are sponsored

each year to study at one of the eight universities for International

Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Since 2002, 431 fellows

from over 75 countries have participated at a cost of more than $23

million.

International Education – Rotary is the world's largest privately

funded source of international scholarships. Each year, about 1,000

university students receive Rotary scholarships to study abroad.

Rotary clubs also coordinate a high school-age student exchange

program that has sent nearly 8,000 students abroad for three

months to a year.

Humanitarian Projects – Rotary clubs initiate thousands of

humanitarian service projects every year. These volunteer-driven

projects address the root causes of conflict, such as hunger,

poverty, disease and illiteracy.

Literacy – Rotary clubs work to improve literacy rates worldwide. A

unique, Rotary-pioneered approach called the Concentrated

Language Encounter (CLE) has proven very effective in resource-

strapped developing countries. It was so successful in Thailand,

that the Thai government adopted the program nationwide.

Water Management – Recognizing the importance of clean

water, many Rotary clubs help to dig wells and develop water

treatment and distribution systems to increase access to fresh

drinking water for communities in need, especially in developing

countries.

Rotary clubs conduct a variety of activities.

Obviously, every news cannot be published due to

paucity of space.

Only important, interesting news and articles will find a place.

Decide if the event or activity is of interest to Rotarians all over India

and other countries.

As a policy, they don't promote or endorse future events or projects. This

is a matter of fairness, events or projects. This is a matter of fairness,

practicality and limited space. They prefer to receive news of events

which have already taken place, or projects that are complete.

However, they are increasingly being asked to promote forth-coming

events. They cannot find space to advertise every function held by the

3,000 clubs in the 30 district that the magazine serves But there are some

events which, they feel, mitht benefit from some prior exposure in their

pages. They invite clubs to submit details of major fund-raising events for

inclusion under the heading "Coming events." They cannot promise

publication and the editor remains the final arbiter as to what is to be

published.

Sending text contributions Provide them with the facts : Who? What? Where?

When? Why? How? Use detailed descriptive language. Emphasise the human interest element of your

story. Use anecdotes and quotes from club members,

beneficiaries and others. Lengthy articles rarely hold reader interest. So, keep articles simple and

brief. Word limit for news items :150-250 words; Half-page features : upto 350

words and full page articles : 700 words with a couple of good

photographs. Include the name and telephone or email ID of a comtact person who can

provide us more information. Send submissions by regular post, courier

or e-mail. Matter should be typewritten on

one side of the paper. Give double line

spacing in normal lower case and use

capitals only where required. Send all communications on the Club's

letterhead. Mention RI District Number and club

name when you are filling the report. Send communications in Hindi or English. Focus the articles on events rather than on

personalities. Contribute clean jokes for publication. Send articles about outstanding projects done by

Rotaract and Interact clubs. Send articles about outstanding projects done by

Rotary Community Corps. Report innovative programmes and projects done by

clubs and districts with grant from The Rotary

Foundation. Encourage Rotarians/Anns/Annets who are artists to

send good cartoons for publication. Report significant achievements by Rotarians. Send club bulletins to Rotary News periodically. Send information to Rotary News faster. Use e-mail for faster communication. If you have any doubts, just call them. Send articles, subscriptions, queries and complaints, if any, separately.

Sending Photographs to Rotary News

The best images show action. Rotary News recognise that a

snapshot which perfectly captures a moment is rare and your

subjects may have to pose. But your goal should be to create an

image that appears candid and natural. Photographs should

depict Rotarians and/or project beneficiaries participating in

hand-on activities. Always give details of the photographs. Include names, locations, dates

and photo credits and permission if the photograph is protected by a

copyright. Write legibly. Include club name and RI District number. Attach the photographs individually using glue stick or cellophane tapes. Suggest use of professional photographers. Send colour prints. Black-and-White images may be acceptable on a case-by-case basis. The Photographs should be in *.tiff and *.jpg format only. If you submit photographs digitally, it should be at least 300 dpi. Photographs should be of Maxi size (152 mm x 100mm). Glossy prints

only. Photographs should be sharp and composed properly.

Don't send photographs showing handshakes, cheque presentations or

people posing in front of a banner.

Don't use pins, triangular clips or stapler to attach the photographs.

Don't fold the photographs.

Don't send printouts of the photographs.

Don't write on the reverse side of the photographs.

Don't send photographs by fax.

Don't send photographs by email. They do not reproduce well unless

they have been scanned professionally.

Don't send digital photographs embedded in Microsoft Word,

Rotary Community Corps (RCC)

Rotary clubs organise and sponsor these groups of non-

What is the story behind the Rotary wheel pin?

The first lapel pin in the history of the Rotary was

designed and made by New York Rotary Club member,

John Frick on October 14, 1909 and worn by the club's

first president Bradford Bullock from 1909 until his

premature death in 1911 (at the time, he was serving as

VP of the National Association of Rotary Clubs). The

forerunner of the traditional Rotary pin worn today, it

features the Rotary wheel has it appeared in its earliest

representation with eight spokes, no cogs, and no keyway.

In 1918, two Rotarian engineers from the Duluth Club Charles Henny

Mackintosh and Oscar Bjorge (formally of Minnesota) petitioned Rotary to

amend the design of the wheel. They argued that a cogwheel with 19 cogs

would not work. Also, the emblem had square-cornered teeth of

disproportionate size, and the cogs were irregularly spaced. Charles called it,

"An anachronism to engineers." Oscar sketched a new wheel, with 6 spokes

(symbolizing the 6 Objects of Rotary at that time) and 24 cogs or teeth. This

design was presented to the Rotary world in 1920.

However, there remained many versions of the Rotary wheel in use around

the world by the different clubs. the Oakland Club was still using its 1914

wheel and oak tree in 1922. It wasn't until 1922 that the Rotary International

Association declared that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the

exclusive emblem of Rotarians. But, before the approval of Charles and

Oscar's gear wheel, the President of Rotary club of Los Angeles, Will Forker

submitted one change : "The 'hub' design of the new 'wheel' is that of an

'idler' wheel or gear, there being no provision for the reception or

transmission of power to or from a shaft," he argued. But, he said,

incorporating a keyway would make the new wheel "a real worker". Oscar and

Charles heartily agreed. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design,

which we see on our pins was formally adopted as the official Rotary

International emblem.

Why wear a Rotary pin ?

Reasons for wearing a pin varied : for publicity of Rotary, for pride, for

acceptance and recognition, for the start of easy conversation with other

Rotarians wherever you go. Past RI President Bob Barth (1993-94, from the

Rotary Club of Aarau, Switzerland) felt that a Rotary pin says this about the

wearer : "You can rely on me, I am dependable, I am reliable, I give more

than I take, and I am available."

Go ahead and Implement 5 for 1

This is a very effective system and can do wonders. Methodology can

be understood with the following illustration :

1. Let us assume a club has 6o members.

2. Ask your spouse to become member of the club.

3. The President Elect with Membership Chair, 2 months before

taking over, should divide 6o members in 12 groups of 5

members each.

4. Each group is assigned one month starting July and ending at

June.

5. These 5 members in their assigned month will be required to

bring one new member. This member shall be introduced and

inducted in the first meeting of the month and would be seated

at the head table with the speaker.

6. Thereafter this group shall collectively act as mentor for the new

member till such time that he gets into the stream and starts

enjoying his being a Rotarian.

7. For 5 Rotarians to identify one new Rotarian in a year is not a big

deal at all but at the end, it would bring an incredible result of

20% growth with an inbuilt mechanism to ensure retention.

Rotary Club Central is online goal-setting tool, which helps club and

district leaders to monitor club progress and achievements in three key

performance areas: Membership initiatives, Service activities, and Rotary

Foundation giving.

It is available to all Rotarians, but has additional features depending on

officer role. It is accessible from the Member Access homepage at

rotary.org. You can click on Rotary Club Central under the Club Activity

link. You can also click on the picture or link in the "Featured" list. This will

take you to the Club Snapshot. From here, you can see some of your

club's details (such as meeting location, website, charter date, members,

etc.) You can also see a summary of how many goals your club has set and

achieved in each section of Rotary Club Central. To view or edit these

goals, you can either click "Rotary Club Central" up by the Club Details or

"View Details" next to Goals and Progress. There are tabs for Service and

Foundation Giving also. You can start with the trends section depicting

club's membership retention over the last five years. Clubs can set four

main goals in this section :

- Membership Retention

- Rotarian Engagement

- Club Communication

- and Public Relation Moving on to the Service tab,

you're presented with a trend graph displaying a breakdown

of the impact achieved from your club's service projects and

activities over the last three years. The four impact measures

are number of volunteers, total volunteer hours, cash

donations, and in-kind donations Scrolling down, there are

three main goals here, which are;

Service Projects and Activities

New Generations Clubs (which includes sponsoring Rotary and

Interact clubs), and New Generations Participants (which covers

Youth Exchange and RYLA). And lastly, on the Foundation Giving

tab, this trend graph shows your club's Annual Fund goals and

giving over the last 5 years. On all three tabs, you can view each

trend graph in table form under each respective graph. These

tables can be expanded out show the numerical values for the last 5

years Below the Annual Fu trends, there are the three main goals for

Foundation giving :

The Annual Fund is broken out by Paul Harris Society, Sustaining

Members, EREY, and other contributions.

Then we have PolioPlus.

And last we have Major Gifts and Endowment Fund, which induct,

Major Gifts, Bequest Society, and Benefactors.

Each tab has a link to resources on the left hand navigation bar. This will

give you access to resources that can assist you in setting goals for your

club. Resources include publications, links to relevant web pages, videos

and much more. From here, you can view and download reports that are

related to each of the three tabs. The reports you see will vary depending

on your role.

About entering goals for club

Everyone in the club can view goals. At the club level, the president

secretary, treasurer, Foundation chair, membership chair, and executive

secretary can all enter and edit goals for the year they are in office.

At the district level, the district governor, committee chairs, and district

executive secretary can view and edit the goals for all clubs in the district

fo their year. The assistant governors may view all goals but only edit the

goal for the clubs in their club group.

When goals are set on behalf of a club, an automated email is generated

an sent to the club president listing the goal change and who made the

change Ideally, club officers will enter their club's goals during their elect

year However, current, incoming, and immediate past officers can view

all yea tabs, and edit goals and achievements for their own year at any

time (ever after their year is over).

Most of the goals in Rotary Club Central are entered in one of four ways.

There are numeric goals (for example, number of new member!

retained)

Monetary goals (these are always in USD)

Percentage goals (some goals provide the option of entering

percentage or numeric value)

and Yes or No goals

Basically Rotary Club Central is a club-focused tool however, there are

some district-level features to help district officers assist clubs with their

goals.

The District View offers a summary of all goal and progress information

for the district. From this summary view, anyone can see the total % of

clubs who have set a particular goal, the total goal for the district (based

on clubs reporting), the percentage of clubs working towards

achievement of that goal, and the total progress to date. District officers

can see the progress of all the clubs in the district or choose a particular

club to view their goals and achievements.

Next, is the Club Group View, This is just like the district view except that it

allows a district leader the ability to focus on one club group. As a district

officers you also have the option to switch between different clubs from

any page at Club-View level.

There is the Rate Clubs page which allows the district governor and

assistant governors to rate the clubs and provide comments. Please note:

only the governor, governor-elect, and immediate past governor can

view all the club ratings tinder each year tab. At the end of the year, when

all clubs have received t heir final ratings, the district governor will

confirm the rating. This freezes all the ratings and fulfills the governor's

duty of submitting the Memo of Club Visit to RI.

Here are some of the highlights

The Service Projects and Activities goals are integrated with

Showcase. This means that if a project is entered in Rotary Showcase,

any of the relevant information can be linked to RC Central

eliminating the need for duplicate entry. This will also allow projects

entered in RC Central to be pushed out to Showcase for public view.

Age and gender demographics are at the Club Snapshot as well as the

Club tab. Clubs can visually compare last year's information to the

current year.

There will be a Coordinator View, which will be just like the District

View and allow Rotary Coordinators, Rotary Public Image

Coordinators, Rotary Regional Foundation Coordinators, and their

assistants to view goals and progress for their entire region. This will

help them assist clubs and districts with their strategic planning.

Finally, there will be a Global View which will allow everyone to see the

sum of all the goals and progress entered into Rotary Club Central.
