December program: Holiday Banquet & Honey tasting

Bees & Bee Supplies: Shop local

If you’re using holly sprigs with bright red berries to decorate this season, thank a bee. Honey bees pollinate holly plants - without them, no berries!

Once again, it is time for the WCBA’s annual Christmas Banquet! This will take place next Tuesday, our regular meeting date, but we’ll be setting up starting at 5:30 p.m. with the meal planned to start at 6:30 p.m. The club will provide meats, and asks members to bring sides, salads and desserts to share. There will also be a separate table dedicated to a low-key honey tasting, so if you have your own or other interesting honey to share, please bring it.

We’ll need a few volunteers to help with set up and clean up - please sign up online.

Plan to join your fellow beekeepers for an evening of fun, feasting and fellowship!

The WCBA executive committee has decided not to sell nucs to club members in 2014, and instead will provide a list of individuals and businesses selling bees and bee supplies.

The club originally provided nucs for purchase when there were fewer purchasing options available for individual beekeepers. However, the number and quality of bee suppliers in or near North Carolina has increased dramatically in recent years - including some club members launching new bee rearing businesses! Club officers would like to encourage members to support these vetures by placing orders directly with their supplier of choice.

If you are planning to sell bees or supplies, or know of a supplier you would like to have included on the club list, please contact WCBA secretary Kate Hanser by December 20 with the supplier name and contact information!

November meeting summary

Best wishes for a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!

Club president Sarah Myers opened the meeting by welcoming guests, thanking snack providers, and reviewing the October meeting and state fair and election results. Reminders were also made about ball cap availability, club shirt orders, and the December banquet.Charles Heatherly updated the club on steps taken by the NCSBA executive committee to eliminate the office of immediate past president, which oversteps their authority. He emphasized that former president (and WCBA member) Danny Jaynes had not engaged in any misconduct; rather, he had been trying to reform the organization. The club executive committee had voted to submit a resolution to the NCSBA asking them to reverse their action.David Bailey announced the opening of his Raleigh store on South Saunders Street (see p. 3).Tom Underhill opened his presentation by playing a segment of an online lip balm making webinar (available here), which introduced the ingredients, a basic recipe and equipment setup. He then gave a live demonstration (using a video camera to project the process on screen) of the lip balm making process from start to finish. He noted that the simple process is an easy entry into making cosmetics and that costs are relatively low.James Knox’s November recommendations include starting to clean & assemble equipment for next season, check your hives on warm days to evaluate food stores, combine weak hives now, put in a solid bottom board and entrance reducer, and follow instructions on all medications in use. Do not make any colony splits now!The meeting concluded with drawings for door prizes (a wire sculpture and stickers donated by Bailey Bee Supply) and raffle items of a bee brush & lip balm, smoker and NCSU - ECU basketball tickets with parking pass donated by Bailey Bee, Tom Underhill, and Ken Cobb.
