CSFA Hits the Road In 2017! Dear CSFA Members and Partners, In the wake of the successful 2016 National Conference at The Breakers, the CSFA is primed to capitalize on the positive momentum during 2017’s ten year anniversary celebration. The CSFA has scheduled four regional conferences in place of the traditional national conference. Next year’s events will be held in conjunction with the PGA Show in Orlando, January 25th – 26th, with the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of the CMAA in Dallas in June, in South Florida in July/August, and finally, on the US west coast in October/November. Not only will this arrangement allow for greater member participation, but it will provide additional opportunities for our corporate partners. As conference style events, each occasion will span two days and host corporate partner exhibitions. Regional offerings will be open to all members regardless of location. We are excited for this new format and will be publishing details as they become available. Take note of the events you wish to attend most while we continue to work behind the scenes to deliver an incredible educational experience. For now, take advantage of the outstanding education provided by CSFA members and partners in this fall newsletter edition. Topics span from understanding hot and cold therapy, how complimentary assessments can boost your bottom line, to how the CSFA has enhanced a member’s career – plus PHIT America highlights how physical activity can save you $2,500. Thank you to all our members and corporate partners for your exceptional support of the Club Spa & Fitness Association. THE HOT AND COLD DEBATEBy Kayla S. Wintermute, PTA, On-Site Physical Therapy

Heat and cold therapies are two of the most common,non-invasive and non-addictive forms of pain relief formuscle and joint pain, however no matter whichhealth professional you talk to there is going to be a range of opinions on what to use and when to use it.Hopefully this article will give you some basic facts onthe topic and help you choose the best option for your injury.

Generally speaking, a new injury will cause some sort of inflammation and possibly swelling. Ice will decreasethe blood flow to the area of injury, thereforedecreasing inflammation and swelling. Pain that recurscan be treated with heat, which will bring blood to thearea and promote healing.

The following information can help you learn whenand how to use temperature-related therapies.

Heat Therapy

What does heat therapy do? Heat opens up bloodvessels (vasodilates), which increases blood flow andsupplies oxygen and nutrients to reduce pain in jointsand relax sore muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Thewarmth also decreases muscle spasms and canincrease range of motion. Applying superficial heat toan area of your body can improve the flexibility oftendons and ligaments, reduce muscle spasms, andalleviate pain.

How is it applied?

Sources of heat can supply either dry or moist warmth.Dry heat sources may dry the skin. Moist heat maypenetrate better. Heat can be applied by an electricor microwavable heating pad, hot water bottle, gelpacks, or hot water baths. The heat should be warm, not too hot, and should be maintained at a consistenttemperature, if possible. Ask your doctor or physicaltherapist which heat source would be best for you.

When do you use it?

Apply heat if you have stiff joints or chronic muscle orjoint pain.

How can I use it safely?

Don’t apply it directly to skin. Instead, wrap the hotdevice in several towel layers to prevent burn.

Additional tips:

• Do not apply heat for longer than 20 minutes, unlessyour doctor or physical therapist recommends longer.

• Do not use heat if there is swelling. Use cold first, andthen heat.

• Do not use heat if you have poor circulation or diabetes.

• Do not use heat on an open wound or over stitches.

• Do not lie down on a heating pad; you could fallasleep and burn your skin.

Cold Therapy

What does cold therapy do? Cold slows down bloodflow (vasoconstricts) to an injury, thereby reducingpain and swelling. Cold therapy slows circulation, reducing inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain. Itshould be used if the area is swollen or bruised or if anacute injury has occurred.

How is it applied?

Cold is applied by an ice or gel pack, ice bath, orfrozen water bottle.

When do you use it?

Any cold treatment should be used for 24 to 48 hoursafter an injury. Cold therapy is good for sprains, strains, bumps, and bruises that may occur in sports or lifting.Apply cold packs or ice bags to injured areas for nomore than 20 minutes at a time, removing the cold forat least 10 minutes and reapplying it again.

How can I use it safely?

Do not apply ice for longer than 20 minutes at a time. You can actually cause frostbite if you do this. Also, wrap ice or ice packs in a thin towel before applying.

If in doubt as to whether to apply heat or cold to aninjury, ask your doctor or physical therapist.

My personal testimonial about the effectiveness of using the CSFA job bank:

Just over a year and a half ago, I was working in the fitness and wellness industry outside of the private country clubsetting. After being in the private club industry for fifteen years, then experiencing fitness and wellness in a close butdifferent world, it occurred to me that the private country club’s fitness and wellness sector is the place to be! I yearned to be back in the business that I knew best with its many positive attributes.

I then began looking for a position in a private club. I searched on all the popular job posting sites and discoveredhow little to no positions were available in my desired area of interest.

Being a former CSFA member and remembering when the CSFA first was formed, I recalled that there was a Job Bankthat is specifically intended for fitness professionals in the private club sector.

I immediately contacted the CSFA and posted my resume on their website. After just one month of posting, therewere two CEO’s from very desirable country clubs looking for a Director of Fitness, and they contacted ME!

A month later, I was hired! I also applied to serve on the Board of Directors for the CSFA and was accepted.

After a successful year at my new position and with no intent of leaving, I noticed an opportunity of a lifetime postedon the CSFA’s Job Bank as the Director of Fitness and Wellness for one of the country’s most recognizable andoutstanding country clubs, Cherokee Town and Country Club.

I applied and am now the new Director of Fitness and Wellness at Cherokee! Without the knowledge of the Job Bankand my ambition to seek out all possibilities, I would in no way be in the position that I am today!

I encourage all fitness, wellness, and spa professionals to use the CSFA’s Job Bank, whether you are looking for aposition or just need qualified staff to fill positions at your respected clubs.

In today’s budget-conscious society, one of the bestways to save money is to simply get some exercise. Yes,there is money to be saved by getting off the couch, stepping away from the computer, putting down thecell phone, and going out to break a sweat! By playingball or getting a workout, you can save as much as$2,500 every year.

In a story in The New York Times, the results of a recentstudy indicated that the financial benefits of exerciseare in the form of reduced medical costs. And, thosebenefits can be reaped from walking as little as 30minutes a day for five days a week.

This physical activity study featured more than 26,000men and women and was conducted by a number ofuniversities and hospitals in the U.S.

Dr. Khurram Nasir -- a preventive cardiologist andDirector of the Center for Healthcare Advancement

and Outcomes atBaptist Health SouthFlorida Hospital (Miami,Florida) -- oversaw thestudy, which focused on the link betweenexercise andcardiovascular health.

In a nutshell, the study confirmed the cost-savings link between a physically active lifestyle andcardiovascular-related health costs. In other words, the more exercise you get, the less likely you are tospend money on cardiovascular health issues.

There is a bottom line to the study, if you ask Dr. Nasirwho says that “being physically active is good for your wallet.” Other members of the medicalcommunity agree with Dr. Nasir.

“Physical activity has become a major focus of myresearch because it is a low-cost option for impacting a wide variety of disorders,” says Erik J. Groessl, Ph.D.,Department of Family and Preventive Medicine,University of California-San Diego (La Jolla, California).

“Humans were meant to move and lack of movementleads to both physical and mental deterioration,” notesJames O. Hill, Ph.D., Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine,Physiology, and Biophysics, University of Colorado,Anschutz Medical Campus. “Increasing physical activityshould be high on our list of national priorities.”

Those physical activity habits for many Americans aretaught at school – during P.E. classes at school or duringbefore-school and after-school physical activityprograms. To help stimulate a resurgence of P.E. inAmerican schools, which is offered in only 48% of

American schools, PHIT America is in the midst ofdistributing grants – called GO! Grants – to elementaryschool to stimulate P.E. programs. Since, the fall of 2015,PHIT America GO! Grants have impacted the lives ofmore than 100,000 elementary school age children atmore than 270 schools in the U.S.

Founded in January 2013, PHIT America is a non-profitcampaign focused on overcoming the severeramifications of the ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ through threestrategic approaches – education, supporting school-based activity programs, and advocacy – which will getAmericans, especially our youth, to be more active, fitand healthy. The Club Spa and Fitness Association (CSFA) completeda successful National Conference in early August as apart of the Club Summit for Golf, Sports and Spa/FitnessManagement held at The Breakers, in Palm Beach, FL,recognizing award recipients and discussing the growingneed for fitness services in private clubs.

The CSFA welcomed increased attendance from 2015, a larger corporate partnership engagement and abroader membership base, with clubs traveling from asfar away as Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland,Massachusetts, Texas and Virginia.

Organized by the CSFA, the Florida Chapter of the ClubManagers Association of America and the U.S.Professional Tennis Association, the summit was held July31-August 3 at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida.

“This year’s CSFA conference was possibly the best ourgrowing organization has ever had,” said KevinCaldabaugh, the President of the CSFA and FitnessDirector at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, FL. “Muchof that is due to the joint efforts of the CSFA and CMAA.From the pre-conference, the outstanding array ofspeakers and two outstanding days of education, thiswas truly the most valuable conference our membershave ever attended.”

Bob Lawrence, the Florida Sales Manager for GymSource and a partner with vendor Cybex, was honoredby the Club Spa and Fitness Association (CSFA) with theVision Award for his longstanding commitment to theorganization and excellence in his profession.

The award was presented on Monday morning, August 1at the CSFA Business Meeting. Brian Idle, the President ofPeacock + Lewis Architects and Planners, LLC and thewinner of last year’s Vision Award, made thepresentation. The Vision Award is a way of recognizingindustry leaders who have played an important role innot only supporting the mission and growth of the CSFA,but contributions to the spa, fitness and private clubindustry as a whole.

“I am honored that the CSFA thought about me in thismanner,” Lawrence said. “I really believe I look at thingsin the customers’ eyes and get what they’re looking for.The CSFA and its associates gave me the opportunity todo my job when Gym Source was growing the business inFlorida, and I wouldn’t be here without them. It’s moreabout giving back to a group of people that helped me.And I know that, corporately, Gym Source and Cybexsee the value in this relationship.”

Mary Johnson, the Director of Fitness and Spa Operationsat The Commons Club, Bonita Springs, FL, was awarded“The Future of Fitness Scholarship" to California StateUniversity of Pennsylvania by the CSFA. She originallyapplied for CALU’s Global Online program in 2007, butspent time owning a family business, withstanding thedeath of her husband to cancer in 2009 and raising afamily over the last decade before winning thescholarship this year. She plans to pursue a Master’sdegree in Rehabilitation Services.

“My education has been on hold for quite some timenow,” Johnson said. “This is something I’ve strived for fora long time, and I’m extremely honored to win thisscholarship as I start a new chapter in my life. I’m hopingthat I can inspire other members and continue to makea difference is such a professional organization.”

Lynn Hearn, the first President of the CSFA, was honoredwith the Lifetime Achievement Award by theorganization. Hearn is the Director of Fitness at the LostTree Club in North Palm Beach, FL.

According to the recently-released Private Club Fitnessand Spa State of the Industry Report (available under the “Executive Member Resources” tab atcsfassociation.com), only 66% of clubs are offering fitnessassessments, and only 30% offer them free of charge. Ifyou’re one of those clubs not offering assessments, youmay be missing out on a great opportunity both to serveyour members and to create more revenue for youroperation. However, the revenue need not come directlyfrom the assessment--in fact, you may wish to offer theassessment for free to help bring more members in thedoor--but rather through the services your memberschoose based on their individual results.

The Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida, has hadtremendous success in taking their members through athorough assessment process, then providing them withthe most appropriate services based on the outcome ofthat evaluation.

Fitness Manager Chuck Niessen personally conducts allassessment free of charge. In season, he assesses 5 to 6members per day, spending approximately 45 minuteswith each individual. During that time, he covers a broadrange of issues, including:

• Contraindications, from head to toe

• Current medications and their relevance to training

• A basic movement screening that demonstratesmember’s abilities and areas for improvement

• The member’s nutrition

• The member’s career as it may relate to physicalactivity or injury

• Current activity level

• Body fat using calipers or InBody body compositionanalyzer that determines basal metabolic rate, calorieexpenditure, water balance, and lean muscle mass; thisanalysis demonstrates where members may need helpor where they are doing well

The assessment is an opportunity to advise membersabout areas for improvement and educate them on theoptions available at the fitness center. Assuming themember recognizes the benefits of working with a trainer,Chuck can pass along the assessment results to help indeveloping an effective program. The good news--morethan 80 percent of the members going through theassessment go on to work with a personal trainer!

Another key to success is to reassess a month or two laterso that the member appreciates the results of their efforts. For example, after training for a month, one 53-year-oldwoman had lost 3 pounds, but she wasn’t excited until the reassessment showed her body fat dropped from 27.2 to below 24--proof that she had lost fat andgained muscle.

Chuck views his assessment protocol as a work inprogress, but it’s clear that his approach is improving thequality of life for many of his members already. SaysChuck, “It makes people aware that they don’t know asmuch as they think they do, and that they need someoneto train them to make sure they don’t hurt themselves.”
