Clubs and Activities 2019-2020

Sevenoaks School prides itself not only on being a centre for academic excellence, but also for its rich and varied educational atmosphere. Our aim is that students should become well-rounded individuals, and the key to this is participation in co-curricular activities. There are a large number of interesting and challenging activities happening at all times around the school – particularly at lunchtimes and after school.

This handbook gives a brief outline of many of these activities. It cannot always be specific about timings, as they are fixed in response to student interest. Locations too can vary as each term puts different demands on the school premises. Further information on many of these activities may be found by talking to your tutors or the pupils and staff involved. If you have ideas for a new club or society you should speak, in the first instance, to: Dr Adrian Rainbow (Deputy Head Co-curriculum).

Please note that a few of the activities have a small cost involved (for example: for transport/external tutors/national membership); details from the staff member in charge. Please clear this with your parents before committing to the activity. A separate list of Service placements, and other creative activities that count towards CAS, is published by Mr Ian Fletcher (Director of Service) at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term.

The Shickler Society is a Middle school discussion group that meets every fortnight to consider interesting issue-based questions. Last year we looked at topics such as: the science of taste; the psychology of laughter, the architecture of Europe's tallest building and what it’s like to sail around the world.

The Shickler Society is open to all pupils in the Middle School. Academic Scholars have to attend the Shickler

International

Society

Amnesty International is a student run service society focusing on advocating for human rights around the world. In addition to discussing global issues as a group, we organize charity events around the school to raise money and awareness for various campaigns, and write letters to government officials internationally in order to spark change and equality when it is lacking. We pick our campaigns as a group, choosing from a mix of large international issues that Amnesty is tackling. Often, we choose campaigns with a personal connection to those in our group to ensure we are doing what we can to support the causes we feel most passionate about. If you are passionate about human rights and want to advocate for those who are not as fortunate as us, you are welcome in Amnesty.

Sixth Form Studio Skills night Sixth Form Studio Skills night is a compulsory element for all IB HL & SL Art Students.

Photography and Digital Editing Any level of experience welcome. You will learn how to use a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera and how to compose and light a shot, including studio lights for portraits and still life. Editing images in Adobe Lightroom and digital manipulation in Photoshop. Please email Mr Merewether if you would like to join for a four week course. Limited numbers available for each course. This student-run science journal allows those interested in communicating ideas about science to write articles on interesting topics. A team of student editors produce a journal available for the whole school to enjoy. Each issue is found on Firefly, and we are always interested in receiving articles.

Extending the skills taught in CCF, the Drill Squad trains and rehearses demonstrations, parades and Honour Guards for display on CCF camps and inspection days. Aimed at any member of the CCF who wishes to advance their skills and particularly useful for Cadet Non Commissioned Officers who will be delivering drill training to their sections.

Badminton Club Badminton is a sports option for Year 11 and Sixth Form students in the Michaelmas and Lent terms. This session is largely for students in all other year groups and teams are selected from this session for the Junior tournaments the school enters.

Basketball Basketball is a sports option for Year 11 to Sixth Form on Tuesdays and Saturdays and there is a club practice on Mondays and Fridays. The U19 and U16 team is entered in the London Independent Schools League and the younger teams occasionally play friendlies with London based and local teams. The Sennocke Centre is also the training site for the Sevenoaks Suns National League Teams which have evening training sessions for all ages. All year training.

Bridge Club Come and learn to play the most popular card game in the world – an exciting game based on skill rather than luck. Anton Mauve, Jim Garlinge and Jessica Mauve of the English Bridge Union’s education arm will come in to teach students how to play. Students will work towards various levels of the EBU’s Junior Award Scheme, from Minibridge to Bronze and Silver Awards. In our first year of Bridge Club (2017-18) we took 7 students to the Inter-Schools Bridge Tournament for an enjoyable and successful day of competitive bridge.

Chess Club

We are fortunate to have John Emms running chess club. John is a chess grandmaster, and has represented and captained the English team at Chess Olympiads. He is an English Chess Federation (ECF) Accredited Coach, and has coached national junior teams. Coaching sessions will focus on improving skills such as problem solving, visualisation, calculation, and logic and reasoning, as well as building up knowledge in all aspects of chess.

JCU is an opportunity for Y7 and 8 to spend a bit of time thinking about some of life’s big questions, for example: “Why are we here?”, “Isn’t being good the most important thing?”, “Why trust the Bible?”, “Is there any good evidence for the resurrection of Jesus?”, “If God exists, why does he allow suffering?”, “What happens when we die?” We also look at Mark’s gospel to see what it can tell us about Jesus, and what impact that has for us. As well as great discussions, there’s usually tasty cake too! It’s all very relaxed and informal, and all are welcome, whether Christian or just curious.

With the climbing wall in the Sennocke Centre proving a great success, this is a good time to join the regular rock jocks and improve your ability, agility, strength and even exam grades by having fun climbing, bouldering, abseiling and using the high ropes course. Should we assassinate dictators? Introduce a universal basic income? Compensate people not found guilty at trial? These are just a few of the questions that we have argued recently. Whether you want to pit your wits against your peers in our school sessions or enter the top national and international competitions, in Debating Society we guarantee that you will develop your ability to present a compelling argument, think flexibly on your feet, become a critical thinker and expand your knowledge and understanding of important issues. Our Senior teams regularly reach the finals stages of both the Oxford and Cambridge competitions, while our Middle School teams do the same in the International Competition for Young Debaters. We also have coaching sessions from prominent debating judges. Our Senior debaters run the Lower School society.

Lower School Drama Club is for all those who have an interest in theatre, regardless of experience. It is open to all but takes place in the Michaelmas Term only as forerunner to the Lower School Production in June. The production is rehearsed from January onwards, with auditions taking place in December. You don't have to commit to being in the production to join Drama Club. If getting on the stage is not your ‘thing’, but you are more interested in behind-the-scenes work (costume design, lighting design, stage management, prop making etc) there will also be a chance for you to explore your talents; just let Mr Harvey or Mrs Collier know what skill you are interested in.

Duke of This is a programme of activities that leads to an award. Participants can develop existing interests or try something new. The Scheme is not competitive and anyone with the necessary perseverance, enterprise and commitment can gain an award. Bronze (for those over 14): Silver (for those over 15): Gold (for those over 16): Each award is separate and young people may progress through all three or start where they wish, depending on their age. For each award, participants have to complete the requirements of each of the four sections outlined below: Volunteering - Participation in direct, practical assistance to the community. Expeditions - Exploring the Great Outdoors: With a practice expedition followed by an assessed expedition. 2 days at Bronze level, 3 and 4 at Silver and Gold. Skill - A hobby or skill (there are over 200 to choose from) to be pursued over 3, 6, 12 or 18 months at the various levels. Physical Recreation - Participating in organised physical activity and achieving individual progress within it. For Gold, a residential week of either volunteering or a skills course must also be completed.

Eco Committee This committee is for any student who cares about the environment and wants to take action with regards to environmental sustainability. For the first time in the school’s history, we will be following the global Eco-Schools programme to raise environmental awareness, improve the school’s environment and work on environmental sustainability initiatives in the wider community. Feminist Society Feminist Society is a club dedicated to discussing and finding solutions for (primarily) gender inequalities and stigmatism. We will not only be discussing feminism as a concept, but the culture and history of feminism as well as organising fundraising events (such as movie nights) for charities focusing on gender injustices abroad, so as to not focus solely on local issues. All year groups and genders are welcome and food will be provided.

The Global Action Partnership (otherwise known as 'PROMO'), enables pupils in the Sixth Form to have the opportunity to learn about sustainable development and international charity, and improve their understanding of the complexity of supporting education projects in the global context. Pupils will apply for specific trips (which for 2019/2020 include trips to South African and Ghana), and are expected to take an online course in development as part of the application process. Selected pupils will act as ambassadors for their global projects and engage in fundraising to support global projects which they will visit on the trip, and learn more about the work of community leaders and volunteers.

This group runs on a weekly basis in the IC (and possibly GIH) with the purpose of providing a space for vibrant, critical and challenging discussions relating to social justice in the global context, with a focus on understanding the different socio/economic/cultural contexts that different pupils have experienced. Anyone is welcome to attend the group, and join in the relaxed yet important discussions.

The aim of the club is to allow young historians to enjoy the subject in a more informal manner. We investigate, discuss and enjoy different parts of History that are not always taught in school curriculums, such as the history of empires, the use of film in History, the most important developments ever and pretty much anything that the members of the group would like to investigate. The running of the group ranges from informal presentations by members to film clips or short documentaries. There is no written expectation: indeed, we play many fun historical games including Call My Bluff, Scattergories and Million Pound Drop. The club is open to anyone in Years 7 and 8 with an interest in History. There is no fixed commitment - pupils may attend on whatever weeks they would like. Sweets are provided for members.

Middle School History Society is a chance to discuss and debate different areas of History, both those that you have been taught and those that you haven’t even touched upon! We will also try and take a look at the deeper questions of History; why do we study it? What is the benefit? Can we ever truly learn from the past? What is a revolution? There is a very relaxed atmosphere; there is no pressure to attend regularly, nor to contribute when you are there. You could suggest certain topics if you like. There may be films, there definitely will be quizzes and, of course, there will also be sweets.

Hockey (Boys’) Boys Hockey is one of the main Lent Term games options for Y11 and Sixth Form. However, we do have many talented male hockey players across all years, and we are always keen to support their development in the school context. Therefore, this year we will be running a general boys hockey session (to which boys from all years are welcome) throughout the Michaelmas term, and there will be further opportunities to train together during Lent and Summer. Packed lunches can be arranged for this. Boys from all years will be considered for selection for the Boys 1st XI who have fixtures during the Lent term.

IQ is a club for Lower School academic scholars who are expected to attend. We aim to do two or three trips in the year for academic enrichment; for example, last year we visited Charles Darwin’s house and discussed the impact of Darwin’s theory of evolution in the19C. We also visited the British Museum to see an exhibit on man’s interest in religion and the gods throughout the ages. The club is a good way for scholars in year 7 and 8 to get to know each other in an informal setting.

Law Discussion

Are you interested in legal issues? Do you want to talk about what's happening in the Law? Are you thinking of applying for Law at university or a future career in Law? If you are, come along for an informal discussion session with a particular theme each week from topical discussions to admissions test preparation. We will help you develop the skills needed to succeed in a Law interview at Oxford and Cambridge and there will be opportunities during the year to take part in particular events such as mock trials and mooting. We will host a range of speakers and Law Admissions Tutors including Nick McBride, Director of Studies in Law at Pembroke College, Cambridge and the author of the leading introductory Law text book, ‘Letters to a Law Student’. Composers' Corner gives you the chance to write your own music for exciting projects, in a friendly, relaxed setting. No prior experience in composition is required, but a basic understanding of an instrument, and the ability to read music is useful. Open to all year groups.

recommended one term prior to taking your exam.

Aural grade 6-7: Classes run by graduate assistants for those intending to take either exam in the near-ish future; avoid

leaving these booster sessions until term of entry.

Aural grade 8: One-to-one support sessions with Ms Methuen; attendance is advised in advance of the exam.

Making music is most enjoyable when in the company of others. At Sevenoaks School there are lots of activities, ranging from small ensembles to large groups. Please come and join in the fun. For any information about any of these groups, please come and see Mr Dyer or any other member of the Music Staff.

Current groups include: Instrumental:

Senior Orchestra: By invitation but see Mr Dyer if you would like to be considered and are above approx. Grade 6. Orchestral instrumentalists only (no saxophones, etc.)

Foundation Orchestra: Orchestral Instrumentalists in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Big Band: Open to saxes, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section above Grade 6. This group plays jazz, blues,

swing, funk and pop classics. See Mr Beston or Mr Bassett for more information.

Middle School Jazz Band: For Middle School Jazz musicians. See Mr Beston for more information. Wind Band: Middle and Senior School wind and brass players above Grade 4 standard; Year 8 may join unless required by another priority activity. The Sixth Form Philosophy Society is open to anyone who wishes to explore philosophical questions and engage in discussion with others. The Society meets every week to discuss questions raised by students: recent topics include individualism, eugenics, language, freedom of speech, immortality, minds and machines.

Physics Forum (L6) Engineering Society (Y10 – U6)

Physics-based discussion group interspersed with lectures to stimulate an interest in a wide range of physics topics not necessarily covered within the classroom. A student-run discussion group, exploring all aspects of engineering. The society holds lectures on a weekly basis, exploring new breakthroughs in all fields of engineering. It is a chance for a student interested in the STEM fields to explore beyond the syllabus and get an insight into what it is like to study engineering at university as well as what it is like to work in the field.

We meet weekly to tackle big social themes in a university seminar setting. Last term we discussed ‘Virtue and Prosperity’: the nexus between economic and philosophic theories about wealth. This society is particularly suitable for those considering mixed honours degrees in humanities subjects. Any U6 pupil is welcome to attend.

Prayer and Praise Prayer and Praise is an opportunity for staff and pupils to come together once a week and be encouraged by singing together and having time for quiet reflection and prayer. Sevenoaks School can be a relentlessly busy and stressful place at times, and this is a great opportunity to take a step back and put the focus back onto God, to say thank you for our many blessings and to ask for help for ourselves and others. A typical meeting has 3 songs (often 1 hymn and 2 more modern Christian worship songs) and a short passage from the Bible (perhaps a psalm). The prayers are often led by a pupil. There is no need to worry about not knowing the songs – most are very well known and any new ones will be easily learned. We email links a couple of days before each meeting, so you have a chance to listen if you wish to. Come along and give it a go! Staff and pupils are welcome from all faith backgrounds or none.

Running Club

Running Club operates three times a week after school on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the Michaelmas and Lent terms and twice a week during the Summer term on Wednesday and Friday. The sessions are open to both experienced runners and novices and everyone in between who wishes to improve their distance running and general fitness. There will be a run to suit you, whatever your ability, so please do not be afraid to come along. Wednesday and Friday sessions will be in Knole Park and will tend to be a steady run. The Thursday session will involve intervals (shorter running distances at higher effort with rests in between) – the location will depend on the time of year (athletics track, Knole Park or The Vine). Self-Defence Club Self-Defence Club (est. 2015) is a free chance to learn practical techniques from different martial arts and life skills to help build confidence, coordination and reduce stress. Sevenoaks School Shooting Club has a phenomenal reputation in competitive shooting. Members with commitment and enthusiasm are given the option to join the School Shooting Squad as a Sports Option and also the CCF Shooting Section from Year 10 (places are limited). Those participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme are able to pursue marksmanship as a skill from Bronze to Silver, then Gold. Service roles are also available for the more experienced. The Squad has a competitive bias on both an individual and team basis and we have many successes to our name. But begin by exercising your curiosity in the Shooting Club; choose a suitable time, turn up on your own or with a few friends. You might surprise yourself! Hobbies Club All new shooters must complete a probationary course before firing live ammunition and may then shoot once a week during a designated time period. Safe use of these firearms is the emphasis for beginners as well as learning the basic principles of marksmanship with .22 smallbore target rifles. Year groups will be notified when they may apply for membership.

A termly membership fee applies, as do costs for trips.

Do you enjoy playing challenging games? Do you like finding the optimal way to do things? Creative Writing Magazine (Sixth Form)

Are you interested in creative writing, editing and design? Verve, the school creative writing magazine, is published once a year and includes writing from all year groups. Open to L6th and U6th, Verve will meet once a week and we are looking for students with writing, editing, publishing and design skills. The team will decide both the content and layout of the magazine and be actively involved at all times in the process. There will also be a number of creative writing events during the course of the year for the team to help organise.

The group will start after the Verve assembly on National Poetry Day.

Every May a Sevenoaks Yearbook is published for distribution to leavers. It is a record of their time at the school and is treasured for life by them. The Yearbook is created almost entirely by students with a member of staff providing supervision and guidance. It requires a lot of work but it is a worthwhile exercise.

Working in teams, you will tackle a range of engineering challenges starting with a tallest tower. Each week you will get to explore different engineering concepts like triangulation, inclined planes, and mechanisms in a fun challenging way. Co-Curricular Activities There are many clubs, societies and other activities which take place on a regular basis. There are some which occur more irregularly and sometimes once or twice a term. The school produces co-curricular priority lists of group practices and rehearsals for major activities which represent the school (this list is updated in the termly calendar). Please check these priority lists before signing up for additional activities if you are part of a squad which has to train on given days.

Attendance at these takes priority over all other clubs and societies.

If you are involved with these activities you must organise your other commitments around these timings. You may also need to attend additional rehearsals for drama productions or music concerts during the

year so be careful to notify your teachers if they clash with priority activities.
