CLUSTERED DATA ONTAP 8.3 UPDATE 1: SYSTEM MANAGER

EXERCISE

In this exercise, you explore the built-in version of System Manager that ships with Data ONTAP 8.3. In

particular, you create a data aggregate, a subnet, and a storage virtual machine (SVM) within a preconfigured

cluster named cluster1. You then log in to System Manager for cluster2.

NOTE: This is a simulated environment. The clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 Simulators are not high-availability

(HA) pairs. This is not a supported configuration. The only non-HA configuration that is supported is a

single-node cluster.

This environment consists of:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Active Directory

Two-node cluster: cluster1

TASK 1: LOG IN TO ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER FOR CLUSTER1

In this task, you log in to cluster1’s onboard System Manager from your Windows Server.

STEP ACTION

1. Verify that you see the Modern view of your assigned Windows server.

2. Click the Desktop tile.




STEP ACTION

3. Verify that you see the administrator desktop.

4. The new version of System Manager runs directly on the storage controller.

On your Windows desktop, double-click the “link to PuTTY” icon.

5. Verify that the PuTTY dialog appears.

6. Select the cluster1-mgmt saved session.




STEP ACTION

7. Click Load.

8. Click Open to start the session.

The PuTTY Security Alert should appear.

9. Click Yes to confirm the SSH fingerprint key.

10. Verify that the login prompt appears.

Cluster user accounts with the admin and readonly roles and the http and ontapi application

login types can use a web browser to access System Manager. System Manager also runs within

an SVM that has the same name as the cluster. You can control a web browser's access to

System Manager by using this command:

vserver services web modify -name sysmgr -vserver svm_name

-enabled [true|false]

NOTE: Do not disable System Manager in the lab environment.

15. Close the PuTTY session.




STEP ACTION

16. Administrators access System Manager by navigating a supported browser to the cluster

management LIF. Node management LIFs do not work.

These browsers are supported:

Google Chrome 34.0 and 35.0

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10.0 and 11.0

Mozilla Firefox 29.0 and 30.0

17. On the administrator desktop, open Internet Explorer:

18. In the URL text box of Internet Explorer, enter this URL: http://192.168.0.50/




STEP ACTION

19. When the Certificate Error page appears, click Continue to this website (not recommended).

20. Verify that OnCommand System Manager for your assigned cluster appears in the browser.

21. Notice that, even though you entered “http” in Step 18, the web site was redirected automatically

to the security connection “https.”

TASK 2: EXPLORE THE NEW INTERFACE OF ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER

In this task, you explore some of the changes in the latest version of OnCommand System Manager.

1. Notice that System Manager is similar to previous versions of the tool, with a navigation pane

and a content pane.

3. Select the Nodes category.

4. Explore the functionality that is available for each of the cluster1 nodes.

6. Explore the functionality that is available for each of the subcategories: Storage, Configuration,

and Diagnostics.




TASK 3: USE ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER TO CREATE A DATA AGGREGATE

In this task, you create a data aggregate for an SVM.

NOTE: For more details about configuring a storage system with System Manager, see the Clustered Data

ONTAP Administration course.

STEP ACTION

1. In System Manager, select Cluster > cluster1 > Storage.

2. Click Create Aggregate.




STEP ACTION

3. In the Create Aggregate window, enter these settings:

Name: n1_aggr1

Disk type: cluster1-01 FCAL (Click the Browse button.)

Number of Disks: 14

4. Click Create.




STEP ACTION

5. In the left pane, expand Storage, select Aggregates, and verify that n1_aggr1 was created.

6. Select Cluster > cluster1 > Storage > Disks.

7. Verify that only 11 spare disks are available on cluster1-01.




TASK 4: USE ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER TO CREATE A SUBNET

In this task, you investigate IPspaces and broadcast domains. Then you create a subnet for an SVM.

STEP ACTION

1. Select Cluster > cluster1 > Configuration > Network.

2. If you are familiar with clustered Data ONTAP 8.2 and previous versions of System Manager,

you will notice numerous changes regarding networking in clustered Data ONTAP 8.3. In the

Clustered Data ONTAP Update 2: IPspaces course, you explore these changes in more detail.

When you create an SVM in System Manager, you must create a subnet before you can create

an SVM. In the CLI, however, you can configure an SVM without a subnet.

You can manage all network configuration through this interface within System Manager:

3. Click Create.




STEP ACTION

4. In the Create Subnet window, enter these settings:

Name: sn-SVM1

Subnet IP/Subnet Mask: 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0

IP Addresses: 192.168.0.110-192.168.0.119

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Broadcast Domain: Default (Click the Browse button.)

5. Click Create.

6. Verify that the new subnet was created.




TASK 5: USE ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER TO CREATE AN SVM

STEP ACTION

1. In System Manager, navigate to Storage Virtual Machines.

2. Verify that the cluster1 SVM list appears.

It is currently empty.

3. Click Create.




STEP ACTION

4. On the Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) Setup page, in the Step 1 SVM basic details dialog,

enter these settings:

SVM Name: svm1

IPspace: Default

Volume Type: FlexVol volumes

Data Protocols: CIFS

Default Language: C.UTF-8

Security Style: NTFS

Root Aggregate: n1_aggr1

Search Domains: learn.netapp.local

Name Servers: 192.168.0.11

5. Click Submit & Continue.




STEP ACTION

6. Click Skip to bypass the CIFS protocol setup.

In the Clustered Data ONTAP Update 3: SMB (CIFS) Enhancements course, you configure

CIFS.




STEP ACTION

7. In the Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) Setup, Step 3 SVM administrator details dialog, enter

these settings:

User name: vsadmin

Password: Netapp123

Confirm Password: Netapp123

Create a new LIF for SVM management: Select checkbox

Subnet: sn-SVM1

Port: cluster1-01:e0c (Click the Browse button.)

8. Click Submit & Continue.




STEP ACTION

9. Verify that the configuration settings are correct.

10. Click OK.

11. Select Storage Virtual Machines > cluster1.




STEP ACTION

12. Expand the svm1 subcategory and all subcategories under it.

13. Notice that there is no Interfaces subcategory under svm1.

14. To verify that the SVM management LIF was created by the SVM wizard, select Cluster >

cluster1 > Configuration > Network.

15. Notice that a single IP address was used from the subnet when the SVM’s management LIF was

created.

16. Select Network Interfaces.




TASK 6: LOG IN TO ONCOMMAND SYSTEM MANAGER FOR CLUSTER2

In this task, you log in to cluster2’s onboard System Manager from your Windows Server. You cannot access

cluster2 from the System Manager assigned to cluster1. Likewise, you cannot access cluster1 from the System

Manager assigned to cluster2. System Manager instances are segregated by cluster configuration.

STEP ACTION

1. On the administrator desktop, open Internet Explorer.

2. In the URL textbox of Internet Explorer, enter this URL: https://192.168.0.60/

3. When the Certificate Error page appears, click Continue to this website (not recommended).




STEP ACTION

4. Verify that OnCommand System Manager for your assigned cluster appears in the browser.

6. Click Sign In.

7. Verify that the System Manager interface appears.

8. Verify that this is a single-node cluster.
