On Civic holidayMonday, Clyde Jenkinscelebrated his 84 birthdayby winning himself a sil-ver medal in Le tour deTerra Cotta for his agegroup.
Mr. Jenkins has led avery healthy active life, and to this day finds thetime to bike two to threehours almost everyday.
An endurance swimmeruntil he was 30 years old,at that time he switchedover to running. He raneveryday, slowly gettingbetter and better.
At 57 he retired anddecided he wanted to startrunning in races and com-peting.
“I wanted to start run-ning competitivelybecause I never did run ina race up until that age,”he said in an interview.
At this point in his lifehe spent half the year inCanada and the other halfin California. He joinedthe San Diego track teamand started running withother people, which waswhat he wanted.
“I didn’t really realize Iwas fast until the first bigrace I went in and I wasmerrily running alongwhen I looked over and Ihad just passed a contin-gent of marines,” Mr.Jenkins said.
He commented that heran in a few races inCalifornia and got lots ofmedals from those races.
“I’ve got the bronzemedal from the athleticcongress of the Unitedstates,” he said. “I ran 10Kin 39 minutes and 10 sec-onds when I was 61 years
old.” Mr. Jenkins said the
man who beat his time wasthe gentleman who nowholds the best time inAmerica for the 10K run.
“I didn’t pick upcycling until the air gotbad down in Californiaand I decided that I wasgoing to go over and seewhat it was like inFlorida,” he said.
He joined the GulfCoast Running Club inFlorida and kept up withhis running. It wasn’t untilhe was 61 that he got on abike. He commented thatit was a round about wayto get into biking. Whenhe visited a son who livesin the U.S. he saw hisson’s bike in the garage.
“I said to myself, ‘I’mgonna hop on that bike andsee if I can still ride,’ ” hesaid. “From the minute Igot on it I was glued to it,every chance I could in theevening I’d hop on it andgo.”
Mr. Jenkins boughthimself a racing bike withthe sole purpose of gettinggood enough and fastenough that he could raceon one as well.
The last race he did inCanada before Le tour deTerra Cotta was theHockley Valley duathlonseven years ago.
Three years ago, he washospitalized after experi-encing severe back pain. The pain was so bad thathe could hardly drive orlive his usual active life.
“I had such pain,” hesaid. He spent six monthsin the hospital before mov-ing into the Lord DufferinCentre. Six months aftermoving in, he decided hedidn’t like the food
enough to stay there andmoved into an apartmentjust up the street.
“I was accustomed todoing my own cookingand eating the special foodthat I’d been eating since Iwas about 30,” he said.
Since his stay at LordDufferin Mr. Jenkins hasgotten back on the bikeand back to a higher levelof fitness.
During his stay at theseniors’ residence Mr.Jenkins sold his car andhadn’t been able to gethimself or his bike to anyraces until he met Darrin. The two men have formeda friendship and Darrinhas helped him get backinto racing.
“If it wasn’t for Darrinthis would never have hap-pened,” said Mr. Jenkins.“I don’t have a car, sincewhen I was in Lord
Dufferin Centre I soldmine.”
He said he got a greatreaction from people onMonday. “They’reamazed. I had people whotell me that I’m an inspira-tion.”
On Monday he finishedin second place in his agedivision. “A man 72 yearsof age came in first, so Idon’t mind,” he said.
Darrin also gave Mr.Jenkins a special cyclingshirt showing all of hissponsors and his new nick-name Clyde the Glide onthe back.
“I was so amazed downat that event yesterday, thereaction because theyannounced it over the loudspeaker that I was 84 yes-terday and everybody sanghappy birthday,” he said.“I think somehow I’mextremely lucky.”
