I suspect a lot of our readers are hoping that the weathermen have got it wrong in their predictions of more warm sunny weather. The gardeners and farmers are probably hoping for some rain. It is interesting that the good weather started with lockdown and major reduction in pollution.

A friend of mine is convinced the recent run of good weather is down to the lack of aeroplanes. She tells me that the lack of pollution means the rain droplets have nothing to form on hence the lack of clouds and their rain. When and if the planes return to the skies we will see if she was right. I for one hope not as I have a drink riding on her being wrong (for once).

I’m not sure about her logic, but the good weather is giving people the opportunity to get out and about with their cameras and take some stunning pictures. Another front cover from Sue Trude showing some early roses and more photos inside.

As your local publication, we are always looking to include updates from the many associations and groups within our community and we also like to publish letters or articles written by you! If you have any news to share, information on future events, or items to sell please do get in touch, via [email protected]

Unfolding Fern From Sue Trude

Tennis at the Manor during ‘lockdown’

The court is open for everyone in the village and their friends. You are welcome to come up any-time and have a knock about during your exercise hour. Our family and friends have been playing singles, as it is easy to observe ‘social distancing’. If you feel cooped up at home and want to try tennis for the first time, we have a few rackets and balls to borrow.

You can get to the court up the drive at the end of the high wall. It’s on the left. No need to book. If coming by car park on the grass at the back of the court.

A few requests: Please don’t block the parking area for Manor flat… only wear smooth soled trainers and don’t prop bikes up against the fence.

Ring me with any questions. 01884 277473 or mob 07710506999

Village Optometrist

I’m an Optometrist and I presently have to keep my practice open as I am NHS contracted. I have a glazing lab at my practice also. I just wanted to let people know that during these very unusual times if people are stuck in and are in need of any advice, have any questions, any urgent concerns regarding their eyes etc or if they urgently need any drops or glasses making up, then this is some-thing I can help with.

If I can be of any help please contact me on 07779101133

kind regards, Emma Russo

Covid 19 Care Homes

In care homes across the world right now, times are really tough,

Life without seeing friends and family, for residents just isn’t enough,

Carers do their best, to keep a smile on their face,

To ensure they are looked after, with dignity and grace.

Residents always asking, where’s my daughter, where’s my son,

We have already told them but they’ve forgotten what’s going on,

We’re doing what we can, to protect and keep them safe,

Ensuring that their homes are a virus free, safe place.

We have to work together, to ensure we do our best,

until this virus goes away we can’t afford to rest,

We’ve had to make a bubble to stop the virus getting in,

But it won’t take much to burst, like a balloon being popped with a pin.

For now we are safe, and spirits are high,

But a lot has changed since times flown by,

Some homes have been less lucky, and have had to say goodbye,

As their residents are taken, like angels flying high.

So for now we will continue, as our difficult task goes on,

And we will not stop caring, until this challenge has been won.

Written by a senior carer in Cullompton.

Our Village Food Bank

The response to our village food bank request has been quite overwhelming – in a positive way of course! The people of Clyst Hydon are so generous and we have not only been thankful for the food, drink, children’s books and toys but also the little brown envelopes pushed under the door from all those who use the porch as a ‘bring and buy’. When it started in March it was primarily a source of basics for those affected financially and otherwise by Covid 19. But as time has gone by, we have the joys of surplus goods in our porch. [Maybe it is a modern day ‘feeding of the five thousand?]

Already a few things have been sent to the foodbank in Cullompton which is in a much more des-perate state than our village. The next ‘sort out’ will be going to ‘Bread of Life’ – a charity based in Cullompton church with links to St Andrews, where the food is made into wholesome meals for the homeless in Exeter. But rest assured, a food bank will remain in the porch for a while yet as people come to terms with the changes in their lives. Whilst the government has supported those who have lost jobs etc there are those who have fallen through the net, such as the self employed who don’t have premises and who don’t have enough annual accounts to present. So please, do use the food bank and let people know about it who don’t subscribe to CHN. It is for EVERYONE.

We hope normal service will be resumed as soon as possible

Sarah, PCC Secretary

Request for information

Ravenswood School. This Preparatory School was founded in Paignton in 1921 and moved to Stoodleigh Court, Stoodleigh near Tiver-ton in 1928. It closed as a school in 1992 and I and others who were sent there for schooling try to aquire and add to the Archives and information about the School History, particularly during the Second World War. In 1928, on moving to Stoodleigh, a second headmaster was needed as the original, Mr Sparke, was called up. Appointed was an Oliver Francis Huyshe of which we know a fair amount and his family Clyst Hydon and Sand connections. He retired from the school in March 1948, my eldest brother Peter just remembers him. Clyst Hy-don was considered to be his 'home' - a month or so back I had a letter from the widow of a former Ravenswood Pupil who attended Ravenswood School during the war, John Vaughan. I her email to me Anne Vaughan states I know he enjoyed his time at Ravenswood and at Clyst Hydon in Devon, which I understand was holiday home associated with the school? Do you know anything about it? John spent several holidays there as his parents were overseas during the war, and loved it. This is the first I had heard of this - does anyone have any information or pointers as to how I might discover more information and particularly exactly where he (John) and presumably others passed these holidays. Many thanks Richard Holladay [email protected]
