President’s Message
The Future is Bright for CMIIT
In an historic membership vote, in June 2012, the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) voted to amend their Articles of Incorporation and change their name to the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). Although the society’s name was just recently changed, the SNMMI has been focusing on molecular imaging for many years now. As SNMMI continues to broaden its activities and offerings to encompass all molecular imaging modalities, the Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation (CMIIT) will focus its attention on the translation of innovative new technologies and agents. Our recently completed strategic planning process resulted in a new vision and mission that better aligns with the expertise of our membership:
Vision: Molecular imaging will be an integral part of the medical standard of care by providing specific information that will be used for diagnosis and to guide therapeutic decisions that improve health and well‐being. Mission: To engage the molecular imaging community and leverage the SNM infrastructure to advance the adoption of emerging molecular imaging technologies and probes in preclinical and clinical applications.
Over the next year, CMIIT will be partnering with SNMMI on an Optical Imaging Task Force. The Task Force has been charged with: (1) looking at ways to engage the optical imaging community, particularly those interested in clinical translation of the technology, (2) developing appropriate meeting content (possibly at SNM meetings, at other meetings like the Optical Society of America, or even a stand‐alone meeting), and (3) developing other education and membership content that will appeal to the optical imaging community. As with most successful ventures, it is important to not only use internal resources and expertise, but to also collaborate and partner with likeminded individuals and organizations. This year, CMIIT is partnering with the PET Center of Excellence on a full day symposium at the 2013 Mid‐Winter Meeting on PET/MR; A Different Spin on Nuclear Imaging: The Role of PET/MRI in Molecular Imaging. The symposium will provide a review of the issues related to PET/MRI technology including brief primers on physics and instrumentation, emerging dual imaging biomarkers, and potential clinical applications in neurologic, cardiovascular, oncologic, and musculoskeletal disorders. SNMMI through CMIIT’s initiation is also partnering with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to put on a special meeting, “State‐of‐the‐Art Molecular Imaging in Cancer Biology and Therapy,” that will take place in February 2013. This collaboration is a first for both organizations and arises from the CMIIT and SNMMI strategic plans, in which CMIIT is charged with “Increasing knowledge among members of the scientific community involved in biomedical research about the current value and future promise of molecular imaging, help cross fertilization to other disciplines, and make them aware of the power of molecular imaging and help researchers there get their advances and discoveries to clinic using in vivo imaging.” In addition, CMIIT will also be focusing on several key initiatives:
1. Outreach to the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS); 2. Preclinical imaging standardization and training; 3. Outreach to academic tech transfer officers and companies to discuss and develop best practices to commercialize
agents and technologies. These continuing efforts will make our Center, as well as SNMMI, an effective advocate, a comprehensive educational resource, and a welcoming organizational home for all molecular imaging professionals.

Our speakers’ bureau is matching molecular imaging speakers

and is currently available. The course will be made into an
enduring 13‐part series and will be available in September 2012
for the 2012/2013 academic year. A white paper outlining a
curriculum for molecular imaging scientists/researchers has
been published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine
A curriculum for a translational molecular imaging
scientist/physician is being developed
Grants and awards in molecular imaging are being funded by
the Education and Research Foundation for SNMMI, including
molecular imaging research grants for junior medical faculty,
pre‐doctoral and postdoctoral molecular imaging scholar
programs, and new, expanded student travel awards. In
previous years, up to $300,000 has been awarded. Resources to

Advocacy and Outreach in Washington SNMMI is pursuing a comprehensive and proactive advocacy program that includes Congress and the Federal
regulatory agencies. SNMMI’s Health Policy and Regulatory Affairs team monitors all congressional and
regulatory actions that affect nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. In addition to our ongoing dialogue with
Capitol Hill, each year a series of scheduled meetings between SNMMI members and Congressional legislators
and staff gives SNMMI members direct input into the federal legislative process. Recognizing that molecular
imaging must be embraced by the wider clinical community if it is to thrive, SNMMI is finding common cause
with other medical societies as well as patient organizations, all of whom share our ultimate goal of providing

Patient Advocacy Advisory Board
Representatives from some of these patient organizations sit on the SNMMI Patient Advisory Board,
which provides SNMMI staff, volunteer leaders, and members with the patient perspective with
respect to molecular imaging and nuclear medicine matters. This relationship helps ensure patients’
concerns, ideas, experiences, and recommendations are reflected in the Society’s myriad endeavors.
Be Active in Your Chapter SNMMI has a strong grassroots network that provides a forum for members to take an active part in local
activities. As an SNMMI member, you are automatically enrolled in one of 14 state or regional chapters located
throughout the United States and Canada. Chapter participation enhances one of the most valuable member

History The Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation
(CMIIT) was formerly the Molecular Imaging Center of Excellence
(MICoE) until September 2010, when it changed its name as part
of a new strategic plan. The MICoE was launched in June 2006 as
an organizational component within the SNMMI that was
dedicated to all aspects of molecular imaging in the detection and
management of disease. Funded by a $5 million five‐year Bench
to Bedside fundraising initiative, MICoE was charged with helping
guide SNMMI through the transition from a nuclear medicine
society to an organization that welcomed all disciplines involved in
the many facets of molecular imaging. MICoE spearheaded the
implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that included
advocacy for molecular imaging, education and collaboration with
referring physicians and patient groups, training and education for
the current and future workforces on the applications of
molecular imaging, and support for innovations in translational
research.
Six years later, the successful results of these initiatives are reflected throughout SNMMI membership categories, meeting programming, web resources, publications, and all of our other offerings. As SNMMI continues to focus on integrating all molecular imaging modalities, the new CMIIT will focus its attention on the translation of innovative new technologies and agents. We completed a strategic planning process that resulted in a name change and a new, more focused mission and strategic plan for our Center. CMIIT‐ Call for Volunteers‐ How to Get Involved? The Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation offers a variety of opportunities to get involved. The following information outlines each task force CMIIT currently has, as well as specific goals that each task force is currently working on. While this list is comprehensive of the current activities, the CMIIT Board of Directors will create new task forces to work on new programs if the need arises. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Website Task Force Chair: Alan B. Packard, PhD Time Commitment: Quarterly conference calls The Website Task Force oversees the CMIIT website and guides its continued development into a resource that will serve as a central repository for online information, education, and training in molecular imaging. The website will serve to increase understanding about the benefits and applications of molecular imaging, create an interest in utilizing molecular imaging to advance patient care, and generate interest in utilizing molecular imaging to advance research in relevant areas. This Task Force will provide critical input into the development of materials that discuss the applications and diagnostic and therapeutic benefits of molecular imaging. Working groups in the areas of optical imaging, ultrasound, neuroimaging, and MR imaging assist these efforts by providing specialized content. ____________________________________________________________________________________

Editorial Board Task Force Chair: Alternates each issue Time Commitment: Quarterly conference calls The Editorial Board oversees the production of the MI Gateway newsletter (members serve as editors of specific issues on a rotating basis); assists in assigning authors for Focus on Molecular Imaging (in Newsline) if requested; consults on authors/topics for Focus on Molecular Imaging (in JNM) and in the Molecular Imaging Journal; reviews monthly MI references, selecting the best to be highlighted in the monthly CMIIT email blast and on the website; and provides images for Image of the Month feature (website) and for use in other publications and marketing materials. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Preclinical Imaging Task Force Chair: Stuart Berr, PhD Time Commitment: Quarterly conference call This Task Force was formed to create best practice guidelines based on how to design and conduct preclinical imaging experiments; to serve as consultants on preclinical imaging issues; to develop resources for training MI lab specialists; to encourage the development of standards for image formats and management, and to develop standard protocols for imaging database management and methods. Recently, this group has undertaken an effort to collaborate with European and Australian researchers to create a global training and certification program. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Program Task Force Chair: Jan Grimm, MD, PhD Time Commitment: Monthly Conference Calls (beginning in September ‐ May) Develop molecular imaging based educational programs for the annual and midwinter SNM meetings as well as‐ programs in conjunction with the EANM, WMIC and any others that are deemed necessary and appropriate. These programs should be molecular imaging‐based but not necessarily nuclear‐centric (i.e., encompassing MRI, optical, etc.). ____________________________________________________________________________________ Membership and Innovation Task Force Chair: Todd Peterson, PhD Time Commitment: Bi‐Monthly Conference Calls One of the primary goals of this task force is to develop a program to attract a broad spectrum of molecular imaging physicians, scientists, technologists, and technicians to SNMMI. But this task force has a broader mandate than simply creating a membership recruitment campaign to attract molecular imaging professionals. It determines how SNMMI and CMIIT can better meet the diverse educational, professional, and scientific needs of this very large and multidisciplinary community. ____________________________________________________________________________________

Nominating Task Force Chair: Carolyn Anderson, PhD Time Commitment: Bi‐Monthly Conference Calls (beginning in October ‐ May) The Nominating Committee develops the slate of candidates for the CMIIT Board of Directors election each spring. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Translational Research and Education Task Force Chairs: Jeffrey Norenberg, PharmD, D. Scott Holbrook, BS, CNMT, FSNMMI‐TS and Jonathan McConathy, MD, PhD Time Conference Calls As Needed: Promote training and education in the area of translational molecular imaging. Finalize curriculum for molecular imaging translational researchers and determine if Certification Exam is necessary/desirable. The Task Force will identify strategies and best practices to reduce the cost of developing a new molecular imaging agent. They will serve as Liaison from CMIIT/SNMMI to NCATS to increase interaction with NCATS and other translational initiatives (e.g., CTSAs). Develop collaborative initiatives with NCATS (i.e. symposium on imaging and translation). Pursue collaborations with Science Translational Medicine (AAAS) and other journals with translational emphasis and promote special issue or topical review on imaging. In addition, seek membership for someone with imaging expertise on editorial board of these journals. ____________________________________________________________________________________ NEW in 2012: SNMMI Optical Imaging Task Force Chairs: Frederic H. Fahey, DSc. and Christopher Contag, PhD Time Commitment: Monthly Conference Calls (beginning August 2012) Look at ways to engage the optical imaging community, particularly those interested in clinical translation of the technology. Develop meeting content (possibly at SNM meetings, or at other meetings like the Optical Society of America or even a stand‐alone meeting). Develop other education content. Create PR and/or membership opportunities to attractive members of the optical imaging community.
