Master Key System Levels The Door & Hardware Institute (DHI) has developed an industry standard Alpha/Numeric coding system to formalize the process of assigning key codes in the development of master key systems. The lock manufacturers use these codes to then develop the actual key system bitting codes to key the cylinders and cut the keys. The chart shows the division of a master key system into hierarchies of access. The standard key coding system has been expanded to include key symbols for systems of more than four levels of keying. Note the unique coding for a Two Level System. The key symbols are explained in the next section.

Create a Schematic System Layout After a review of the floor plan, door schedule, and functional use, a schematic is developed indicating an initial system layout. All systems vary. The first example shows the intent of a level three (GMK) system. The second example is a four level system (GGMK) without the functional use descriptions.

Design Your System - Keying Conference Preparation The keying conference is a workshop where the key people confer about the design of the key system. The key people consult together, compare opinions, and carry on a discussion for the purpose of designing a system that meets the needs of the owner as well as allowing for proper manufacture of the key system. A successful keying conference depends on having the relevant people and building information on hand for the type of facility that is being Master keyed.

Relevant People: Locking System Supplier representative (required)

Building Owner representative (required)

Locking System Manufacturer representative

General Contractor representative

Architect representative

Tenant representative(s)

Building Information: Full Size Architectural Floor Plans

Architectural Door Schedule

Original Finish Hardware Specification

Approved Finish Hardware Schedule Submittal

Other Relevant Information: Locking System Supplier initial keying structure proposal schematic

Other Information:

Manufacturer’s Lock Function Chart Key System Schematic Worksheet Key Conference Work Sheet

Item 1 Locking System Supplier Schematic

Explain initial keying structure proposal o Recommendation based on initial plan review

Item 2 Owner Representative explain plans for building use

Redefine Schematic based on owner input

Item 3 Owner Representative work in conjunction with Lock System Supplier to define general areas for MK’s and specific direction for keysets

Note special keying requirements using worksheet Assign Key Symbols on select openings

Note: The information gained through this conference provides enough information to the Locking System Supplier to complete a door by door keying schedule for final Owner review and approval. Upon Owner written approval the key system may be released to manufacturing.
