4. HHDLU Operation
The HHDLU is part of the Honeywell Recorder system. The system is comprised of the on air-craft recorder, the HHDLU for data extraction to a transportable media and finally the PC Auto-mated Test/Transcription Unit. The system is shown in Figure 1. The part numbers involved inthe system description are listed below:• On Aircraft Recorder, SSFDR, PN 980-4700-XXX
• On Aircraft Recorder, SSUFDR, PN 980-4120XXXX
• On Aircraft Recorder, AR SSFDR, PN 980-4710-XXX
• HHDLU, PN 964-0446-001
• HHDLU, PN 964-0446-021
• Hard Disk Drive, PN 700-1679-00X
• Automated Test/Transcription Unit, PN 964-0434-00X
The HHDLU operates in one of three modes - Download Mode, DSDU Mode and Self TestMode. Upon power application, the HHDLU conducts an internal self test, checks for removablemedia (hard disk drive) installed in the PCMCIA slot and if so checks for a valid application pro-gram on the removable media.A. Download Mode
Upon the selection of DNLD, the HHDLU will display a series of option messages to the operator for naming the file to be downloaded, performing simple (delete only) file mainte-nance, downloading all or a portion of the data in the Recorder. When requesting a partial
Page 3Jan 05/01 1-1

PART NO. 964-0446
download, the operator selects the number of hours back from the time the recorder ceased recording operations (i.e., this corresponds to the most recently recorded flight information). During all data transfers, the display indicates progress with an estimate of time to comple-tion.Depending on the capacity of the removable media, the HHDLU provides enough storage capacity to allow multiple flight data files to be downloaded. In the event that the removable media is full (insufficient storage), the user is warned and prompted to delete any data file on the media to allow the transfer to take place. The HHDLU displays all files therefore permit-ting the user to delete any specific file. The storage space is always checked prior to initiat-ing any download.Errors that occur during the download are indicated to the user through error messages.
B. DSDU Mode
The HHDLU performs the Data Signal Display Unit (DSDU) function by displaying the ARINC 573 data stream contents currently being recorded into the crash survivable memory of the Recorder. The data is displayed on the HHDLU and is monitored via the RS422 inter-face. The HHDLU is capable of displaying the data information of 3 parameters from any subframe and word at any one time. The displayed parameter value (binary, decimal, hexa-decimal or octal; user selectable) is not to be converted into engineering units, but is an accurate duplication of the ARINC data word.
C. Self Test Mode
HHDLU Self Test is broken into two levels. At power on, the HHDLU performs a series of tests including a BIOS test and an internal RS422 wrap around test. This insures basic func-tionality without requiring any external hardware. A more extensive self test is available using a separate wrap around/power cable and software located on the PCMCIA hard drive media. This test includes external RS422 wrap around, PCMCIA media read/write/erase tests, keypad and display tests and is included in the Testing section.
D. Upload Mode
The HHDLU design has provided for the future capability of uploading files from the trans-portable media to an Honeywell LRU such as a Data Management Unit (DMU) or Ground Proximity Warning Computer (GPWC), via the RS422 interface. As in the download mode, the display indicates data transfer progress with an estimate of time to completion.
5. Electrical Interface
The HHDLU has two data interfaces and one power interface. The function of the data inter-faces is to provide a communication channel between the airborne equipment and the HHDLUand to provide the data to the user via the HHDLU's removable media (hard disk assembly). The power required to operate the HHDLU is derived from the airborne unit while on the aircraftor from a 115 VAC 400 Hz or 28 VDC power supply while in a test facility. These interfaces aredescribed in the following paragraphs.A. RS422 Serial Data Link
Communication with the various LRU's is accomplished via an Honeywell high speed data link. This data link is based upon the EIA422 specification and is currently in use on the Recorders. This interface is capable of a 750K baud rate and supports CTS/RTS terminal communication protocol.Transient voltage and shorts to ground protection is provided on all signal input/output lines.
B. Personal Computer Memory Card Interface (PCMCIA)
To facilitate data transportability from the HHDLU, a PCMCIA interface (hard disk assembly, PN 700-1679-00X) is provided. The HHDLU has a single slot which conforms to the PCM-

CIA standard. This standard provides for a removable PCMCIA media device which is an ATA mass storage protocol peripheral, i.e. hard disk assembly which emulates a hard disk drive. The HHDLU also has an internally mounted flash memory as the dedicated system program memory.
C. Power Supply
During the download process the power necessary to operated the HHDLU is derived from the LRU. The HHDLU interface cable provides the necessary data and power signals to the LRU. The HHDLU is capable of operating with input power of 115 VAC, 400 Hz or 28 VDC.
D. Software Updates
The HHDLU program software resident in the flash memory is reconfigurable via the PCM-CIA interface. On power up, the HHDLU displays the software part number and version number until a function mode is selected.
6. User Interface
The user interface has been designed to be as simple as possible. Operation of any of therequired functions is accomplished with a minimum of keystrokes. Selection of the desiredmode is made through a menu system on the display. User input to the HHDLU is made via thefour software programmable function keys. Each menu screen provides a means for canceling aparticular selection so that an operator can always have the capability to return to the mainmenu. Screen examples are shown in the Testing section.A. Menus
The main menu offers a choice of one of the three implemented modes of HHDLU operation. These are described in Para. 4 above.
B. Display
The HHDLU utilizes a 4 line, 20 characters, backlit liquid crystal display.C. Keypad
The keypad consists of four tactile feedback membrane keys. Each key is software pro-grammable with regard to its function.
D. Data Storage
HHDLU operations software is stored on the internal Flash/ROM drive. Sufficient storage space is provided to permit future HHDLU applications growth. The HHDLU operations soft-ware is programmable through the removable media port (PCMCIA).The HHDLU download file storage capability is dependent upon the data storage capacity of the removable PCMCIA compatible media (hard disk assembly). The minimum capacity for a 1X (64 word per second) recorder download is 10 megabytes, therefore the capacity of the memory card or hard disk assembly must be 10 megabytes or more. Similarly, for a 2X recorder download, 20 megabytes is needed. Honeywell will provide, as a minimum, a 42 megabyte hard disk assembly with each HHDLU.Data files are stored on the removable media with the default file name format.• DOWNLDXX.DLU
Where XX in the default is 00 and is incremented upward with each new file to download. This permits the user to determine the oldest file for deletion should insufficient memory (data storage) space exist. The HHDLU also allows the user to rename any default file pre-sented.

TROUBLESHOOTING
1. General
This section contains troubleshooting procedures for the Test System. This section also containsschematics and wiring diagrams. The information is intended as a guide in troubleshooting faultsthat occur during testing. It is not a complete analysis of all possible faults.
2. Diagnostics Techniques
Troubleshooting component failures within a circuit or network should be done as follow:A. Check the key signal or pulse faults between related circuits or networks.
B. Isolate fault to a single circuit or network if any key signals or pulses are absent or abnormal.
C. Isolate fault to one area or group of components within a circuit by checking for absent or abnormal signals or pulses between major devices.
D. Check suspected devices for internal or external fault conditions and lines for failures affect-ing circuit operation. This isolates the fault to a component or other circuit elements.
E. Typical Failure Modes
Most failures will fall into 1 of 3 groups: timing or sequence failures, transient or anomalous failures, and internal and external device failures. As a rule, timing or sequence failures do not occur often. Timing parameters of digital inte-grated circuits are rarely out of tolerance or marginal. The exception to this rule is power supply variations. When supply voltages are too high, speed of device operations increases. Likewise, speed decreases when supply voltages are too low. So, if operations timing is marginal or critical, hardware failures can result. A drastic change in supply voltage, espe-cially a low voltage, can affect anything from 1 device to system operations.Transient or anomalous faults are equally rare, but much more difficult to troubleshoot. Usu-ally, transient faults are related to timing or random faults that depend on the operation being performed. If that operation is not executed, then the fault does not occur, or the factors combining to cause the failure may occur only once.Anomalous or one-of-a-kind faults also result from a combination of factors that never occurred before. Such faults frequently correct themselves before they can be isolated, and those that are isolated and corrected, generally do not recur. The most numerous failures, internal device failures, and those occurring externally in the circuit are:(1) Open Bond -- either the inputs or outputs driven by a particular device are left to float,
usually at approximately 1.4 to 1.5VDC.
(2) Short -- either between an input and output, or supply voltage (Vcc) to ground, affect all connecting signal lines. Input-to-output shorts cause a low or ground, while supply shorts cause high or Vcc level.
(3) Short -- between 2 pins, neither of which is a supply ground. If either pin goes high or low, or if both pins go low, then both pins are pulled low and the output goes low. How-ever, if both pins go high, the output goes high.
(4) Internal Control -- failure of control or steering circuitry inside a device often has unpre-dictable effects. Generally, device outputs are stuck either high or low, but sometimes float between high and ground.
Page 2 Jan 05/01 3-1
HoneywellCOMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
PART NO. 964-0446
(5) Short -- between a point and supply Vcc or ground behaves like a device internal short. Connecting lines are either pulled high to Vcc or low to ground.
(6) Short -- between 2 points, neither of which is a supply or ground, causes a low output when either point is high or low, or both are low, but when both points are high, the out-put is high.
(7) Open Line -- a break in external lines causes device inputs or output to float, usually at approximately 1.4 to 1.5VDC.
(8) External Component Failure -- a fault in another device affects this one. Lines between devices may be stuck high or low, or may float, depending on the type of fault.
F. The HHDLU functional test in the Testing section provides the testing.
3. Schematics and Wiring Diagrams This section provides the schematics and wiring diagrams available for use with the AutomatedTest/Transcription Unit.

ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST
1. Introduction CAUTION: ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESDS) ITEMS ARE SUBJECT TO DAMAGE BY
EXCESSIVE LEVELS OF VOLTAGE. REFER TO DOD-HDBK-263 FOR PROPER HANDLINGPROCEDURES.
A. The Illustrated Parts List (IPL) provides a breakdown of the equipment covered by this man-ual. All parts are listed in order of disassembly, showing relationships to higher and lowerassemblies, and are identified by corresponding index numbers on board-layout andexploded-view illustrations.
B. All items are assigned an item number. Parts listed but not illustrated are identified by adash -- preceding the item number.
C. For identification of detail parts and assemblies, the NOMENCLATURE column employs theindenture system. Each assembly is listed with its detail parts listed in the next indenturebelow and to the right. Conversely, the next higher assembly of any detail part may be deter-mined by its location in the indenture above and to the left.
D. Attaching parts immediately follow the part or assembly which they attach and have thesame indenture. They are preceded by the words ATTACHING PARTS and followed bythree asterisks * * *.
E. Effectivity codes (A, B, C, etc.) are assigned, and listed in the EFF CODE column, when twoor more similar assemblies are broken down in the same IPL figure. These codes show thata part or subassembly is used only on the assembly(ies) with the same effectivity code(s). Apart or subassembly with no effectivity code is used on all of the assemblies listed in that fig-ure.
Although the same effectivity codes (A, B, C, etc.) may be used in more than one IPL figure, there is no relation between the codes of one figure and the codes of any other figure. To determine end-item effectivity; i.e., on which end item a part, subassembly, or assemblyis used when multiple end items are listed, find the effectivity code(s) of the item in question. This leads to the assembly(ies) on which the item is used, to the Next Higher Assembly(NHA), etc., and subsequently, to the end-item figure and the end item(s).
F. Unless otherwise indicated by a vendor code number in parentheses following the part namein the parts list, all parts are either commercial standard, military standard, or Honeywellparts.
2. Definitions
The following is a list of terms, their abbreviations (if applicable), and interpretations of how theyare used in the IPL of this manual. If the usage of any of the following terms is the result of a service bulletin, it is noted in theNOMENCLATURE column preceding the term statement. Example: (PRE SB 4)(SUPSD BYXXX) or (POST SB 4)(SUPSDS XX).• ALTERNATE (ALT) Indicates a part, subassembly, or assembly that fully meets required
functional and structural specifications but differs in overall dimensions, connections, installationor mounting provisions, and requires modification to install in a specific application. An alternateitem is listed in the FIG-ITEM column as a variant and identified in the NOMENCLATURE col-umn as “(ALT TO XX)”.
Page 2Feb 01/02 4-1

• OPTIONAL (OPT) Indicates a choice of interchangeable parts, subassemblies, assemblies,or units that meet or exceed required functional and structural specifications for a given appli-cation. Overall dimensions and connections may vary, provided that installation or mountingdoes not require rework or modification. An optional item is listed in the FIG-ITEM column as avariant and identified in the NOMENCLATURE column as “(OPT TO XX)” or “(VXXXXX)OPTIONAL”.
• REPLACES/REPLACED (REPLS/REPLD) A part, subassembly, assembly, or unit is replacedwhen a new part is considered to have superior qualities. Old parts may be used until stock isdepleted. A replaced item is listed in the FIG-ITEM column as a variant and identified in theNOMENCLATURE column as “(REPLD BY XX)”. The replacing item is listed in the FIG-ITEMcolumn as a variant and identified in the NOMENCLATURE column as “(REPLS XX)”.
• SUPERSEDES/SUPERSEDED (SUPSDS/SUPSD) A part, subassembly, assembly, or unitis superseded when it is not of an alternate or optional nature with the new one. It is due to adesign change and is no longer required at the specific application. Old item stock may not beused for replacement. A superseded item is listed in the FIG-ITEM column as a variant andidentified in the NOMENCLATURE column as “(SUPSD BY XX)”. The superseding item is listedin the FIG-ITEM column as a variant and identified in the NOMENCLATURE column as“(SUPSDS XX)”.
• DELETED A deleted part, subassembly, assembly, or unit is one which has been removedfrom a specific application, and no replacement is required. The Figure-Item number and partnumber of a deleted part are retained in their respective columns. NOMENCLATURE and UNIT/ASSY column information is removed and the word “DELETED” is added to the NOMENCLA-TURE column.
• ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESDS) DEVICES Electronic parts, assemblies, and equipment that are susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic dis-charge sensitive devices are identified in the NOMENCLATURE column as “(ESDS)”.
3. Equipment Designator Index
This index contains the reference designators for components shown on the schematics. Thedesignators are arranged in alphanumerical order along with their corresponding IPL Figure-Itemnumber(s).
4. Numerical Index
The numerical index is a complete alphanumeric list of all part numbers in the IPL. The Figure-Item number and quantity used at each location are included.
5. Manufacturers' Codes, Names, and Addresses
The following list contains the codes, names, and addresses of manufacturers as listed in theDefense Logistics Agency Cataloging Handbook H4/H8, Commercial and Government Entity(CAGE) (formerly FSCM).
