SCHOOL PROFILE
River Gate Elementary School opened in August 2009. The school is located in the southwestern portion Charlotte. Because River Gate is in the heart of the community and is located near the shopping center called Rivergate; there has been a great deal of anticipation with the opening of a new school. The journey began in March 2009, and the excitement is still with us here at RGES. At River Gate, our primary goal is enhancing student achievement in a diversified learning environment that promotes student success for all learners. We are new to the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system and it is important that we make a difference for all children attending River Gate. Our student population includes 681 students in grades K-5. Our demographics are as follows: 43% White, 27% African American; Hispanic 18%, Asian 4%; Native American 1%, and Multi-Racial 8%. Approximately 35% of our students receive free or reduced lunch while 13.8% are classified as LEP, 11.2% SWD, and 5.6% Gifted. We are a traditional school that promotes fun learning and total student engagement. Our program strengths include a commitment to ensuring success of all students while building a positive school climate. The academic program at RGES includes a concentrated, focused approach to literacy and math instruction by using SRA Imagine It and Math Investigations in our educational settings. Students are grouped by ability during the math block and routine problem solving is an intricate part of the math period. High expectations for all students’ academic performance, behavior, and character development are essential to building a community of successful learners. To support and maintain a productive learning environment, enthusiastic parents are invo lved in the success of our school, and they are working to enhance the leaning environment by implementing SMART Technology, strong parental environment, novel sets for students, and other opportunities that foster student growth and development. An integral part of learning can be attributed to an experienced, dedicated, and enthusiastic faculty. Our faculty includes 32 certified classroom teachers, 8 instructional assistants, 1 School Counselor, 1 Literacy Facilitator, 1 Math Facilitator, 1 Assistant Principal, 2 Resource Teachers, 1 EC Assistant, .6 Talent Development Teacher, 1 English as a Second Language Teacher, 1 Intensive Reading Teacher and a host of other support staff that promote a thriving environment for learning and student success. During the 2009-10 school year, we will implement instructional programs that promote student growth such as Professional Learning Communities, William & Mary Curricula, Math Investigations, Imagine It, Lucy Calkins Writing Program, Empowering Writer’s, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, Inclusion, Differentiated Literacy Groups, Flexible Math Groups, and the Extended

Learning Program. Students will continue to refine reading skills by participating in our Accelerated Reading program as well as our Extended Learning tutorial program. In addition to our focused instructional program, we promote Character Education, the Accelerated Reading Program, Chess Club, Honors Chorus, Reading Club, Golf Club, Spanish Club, Girls on the Run, and the Gator News Network Club. Our students are excited about these opportunities as these options will enable them to become well-rounded and globally competitive students. At River Gate, our students enjoy their learning experiences and are constantly working hard to become globally competitive. We are extremely proud of our students as they are eager to learn. They have also expressed their excitement about learning opportunities through Differentiated Instruction and Edmond’s Math Challenge promoted by the school. I am elated at the opportunity to open a brand new school in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. Here at River Gate, our students are our first priority, and it is our goal to provide the best instructional strategies that promote academic success and student achievement for all.
