Waste Educ ation Ses sions for Primary Scho ols Waste Education Officer Bag it (1hour) This session helps pupils think about reducing plastic bag wastage by designing their own reusable bag. The workshop lasts an hour which will leave enough time for a whole class of 30 to complete their cloth bag design. Pupils will have a chance to draw a design on scrap paper first to gather their ideas and then, using the fabric pens, draw their final design onto a cotton bag. The bags can then be taken home to be used. Curriculum links: Geography and Citizenship Carrier Bag Football (1hour) This session encourages pupils to think about how to reuse disposable plastic carrier bags by making their own football. The workshops lasts an hour which gives time for a whole class of 30 to complete a football each. Pupils will need to work in pairs during some stages of making their ball and will need to be confident at tying a knot. Pupils bring in their own plastic carrier bags to complete their football. Curriculum links: Geography and Citizenship The 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) (1hour) This session is again similar to the assembly on the 3Rs but involves the pupils thinking in more depth about the actions they can take to follow the 3Rs. The problems with landfill and each of the 3Rs are looked at in turn with a short activity on each to help the pupils better understand the concepts and actions. This session is adapted for different year groups. Curriculum links: Geography, Science and Citizenship Composting (1hour) This session involves more in-depth consideration of how to make compost and look after a compost bin. Pupils are given the opportunity to consider how compost is made as a natural process at a more detailed level. Curriculum links: Geography Science and Citizenship Additional Services (For KS1 & 2) Composting SOS Are you having problems composting? If yes, then please get in contact with us and we can come along to the school and perform an SOS on your compost bin. We can give helpful guidance and tips on how to save a misbehaving bin. Seasonal workshops Throughout the year the Waste Education Team run seasonal workshops such as the Christmas Craft workshops in which pupils are shown how to make Christmas decorations from waste materials. Please look out for these sessions being advertised in the school news bulletin or ask about them when you book your Waste Education Session. Eco-club Workshops Eco-clubs may have any of the workshops from the Waste Education Team but can also choose from these additional sessions. Run your own assembly – The Waste Education Team will help the Eco-club to design and then run their own assembly about reducing waste. Reducing School Waste – The Waste Education Team will visit the Eco-club to support them in creating ideas for their Eco-action plan that will lead to a reduction in their school’s waste. Green/Eco Days The Waste Education Team are happy to assist with Green/Eco Days, either by running any of the above workshops for KS1 or 2 or by creating a bespoke session that will meet your requirements for the day. Bespoke sessions may involve being creative with waste or creating an action plan for the school to help reduce their waste. Twilight Tours The Waste Education Centre is also open to young peoples community groups, like brownies, guides, cubs and scouts. Your group can take part in a tour of the MRF, a working materials recovery facility, where you journey into the world of materials recycling and learn how waste is sorted and baled to be ready for transportation to material specific re-processors. Twilight tours can be booked between March and July and September and October. Please be aware that the latest a session can end is 19.30. Nursery Resources The Waste Education Team have developed a nursery pack for nursery aged children to increase their knowledge of waste and recycling. The Northamptonshire Waste Education Team (NWET) delivers Waste Education sessions FREE OF CHARGE to Northamptonshire Primary Schools to support the delivery of environmental education. The NWET deliver:

• sessions on board the Waste Education Bus, • visits from the Waste Education Officer, and • group visits to the Waste Education Centre and a landfill.

Through these elements of the team we deliver waste education sessions to KS1 and 2 and can work with all levels of abilities. To book sessions please contact the team, whose details you will find on the back page.

Assemblies (20 mins – can be shorter to fit assembly slot)

Why the 3Rs?An assembly that introduces pupils to the issues associated with waste disposal and how they can help to create less waste by reducing, re-using and recycling their rubbish.

Composting – Nature’s recyclingThis assembly introduces pupils to composting. The content includes how to make compost, what to put in to make a healthy mixture and how to take care of the compost bin. Pupils are also asked to think about the issues with waste and why it is important to try and use a compost bin at home or at school. We also offer seasonally appropriate assemblies, for example ‘The 3Rs at Christmas’. Please ask about these when booking.

Key Stage 1 SessionsWaste Education Centre (Suitable for Yr2 and above)The Waste Education Centre includes a fully interactive recycling experience with exhibits, activities and games, all with the purpose of promoting an understanding of the 3Rs of waste management: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. You also take part in a tour of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), a working site, where you journey into the world of materials recycling and learn how waste is sorted and baled ready for transportation to material specific re-processors.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (1hr 45 minutes)A session based upon the 3R’s. Pupils will learn how to reduce waste in their lunchbox, find innovative and fun ways to reuse rubbish and have a chance to play the mini MRF game where the children learn first hand how we separate the waste by looking at different materials and their properties. Curriculum links: Geography, Science, Citizenship

Waste Education OfficerComposting (45 minutes)This session is similar to the Composting assembly but involves more in-depth thought about how to create healthy compost. There are a range of interactive tasks that will help pupils to understand the importance of considering what they put into the compost bin and how to look after their compost bin. Curriculum links: Geography, Science, Citizenship

Waste Free Lunch (45 minutes)Learning about a waste free lunch is an important and simple step that pupils can take to help create less waste. This not only helps the planet but helps to improve their school environment. In this session we run through some introductory activities to help pupils to understand what a waste free lunch is and then in groups create interactive posters that clearly show the difference between a ‘good green’ lunch box and a ‘bad bin’ lunch box. Curriculum links: Geography, Citizenship

The 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) (45 minutes)This session is similar to the assembly on the 3Rs but involves the pupils thinking in more depth about the actions they can take to follow the 3Rs. The problems with landfill and each of the 3Rs are looked at in turn with a short activity on each to help the pupils better understand the concepts and actions they take.Curriculum links: Geography, Science, Citizenship

Key Stage 2 SessionsWaste Education Centre

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (1hr 45 minutes)This session involves looking at the 3Rs and how pupils can do their bit to minimise waste at home and at school. As well as the usual tour of the MRF, pupils will also be asked to complete activities that show them how they can reduce, reuse and recycle. Curriculum links: Geography, Citizenship.

Tour of a working Landfill site (1hour) (tours run from March – October)Tours are available at the Sita UK landfill site on Sidegate Lane, near Finedon, Wellingborough. Find out what happens to our waste, what it looks like and what it smells like. Find out how the methane gas that is created can become electricity.

Waste Education BusThe Waste Education Bus provides fun and interactive sessions that come to you; the bus offers free sessions that are specifically aimed at Key Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) but is also accessible to others.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (1hour)This session is based upon the 3Rs and includes a chance to discuss how we can all contribute to changing our lifestyle to make it better for the environment and an opportunity to look at recycled products that are available today. The session is concluded by exploring the interactive games and IT Suite on the Waste Education Bus. Curriculum links: Geography, Science, Citizenship

Composting (1hour)This session discusses composting and what it takes to create a good mix of ingredients that help the microorganisms, spiders and worms turn waste into valuable compost. The pupils then get the chance to take part in the interactive games and use the IT Suite on board.Curriculum links: Geography, Science, Citizenship
