People from all cultures have long woven plant materials together to make baskets for gathering and transporting goods. Participants in this workshop will weave their own plaited basket for gathering garden vegetables, storing fruit on your table or to place on a shelf and admire. Join Jenn Kirts for this workshop specifically designed for people who have little or no basket making experience. All tools and materials will be provided.

Grab your friends for a fun adventure through the snow. We will strap on snowshoes and get out on the trails to see what’s been happening. After some fun in the snow, we’ll head back inside to finish up with cookies and hot chocolate.

Join Tom Lenon and Dennis Pilaske for an exciting one day adventure that is fairly close to home, but spectacular in both natural and cultural history as we snowshoe along the Au Sable River’s high banks in the Huron National Forest. Participants will meet at Chippewa Nature Center’s Visitor Center at 8:00 am. During the day, expect to hike 3-5 miles on snowshoes. We’ll casually hike and take plenty of breaks, while learning about the area we’re traveling through. The time spent hiking will also be split with a warm lunch prepared beforehand. Although the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center is closed for the winter, we’ll talk about the historic importance of this area from a lumbering standpoint, as well as visit Largo Springs and spend time on the River Road Scenic Byway. We’ll return to CNC around 6:00 pm. To borrow snowshoes and poles at no extra charge, please indicate at time of registration.

If weather conditions are unfavorable, a trip may be canceled (determined at CNC’s discretion) and participants will receive refunds.

The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is one of the last truly wild places in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Explore this 3,400-acres of mature forests, open dunes and Lake Michigan beach on a fresh blanket of snow with experienced trip leader Kyle Bagnall. Participants should bring a sack lunch, water bottles and gear appropriate for the weather, including the windy shores of Lake Michigan. Please bring money to stop for dinner at a restaurant on the way home. To borrow snowshoes and poles at no extra charge, please indicate at time of registration.

After dessert, you can sit back and enjoy as we share tales and music from Midland’s past.

Join Kyle Bagnall, Manager of Historical Programs, as we strap on our snowshoes and head to Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling. The 50-acre stand of virgin red and white pines at the park is one of the premiere natural attractions in Michigan. At the park, we’ll visit the Michigan Forest Visitor Center and watch for Evening Grosbeaks at the feeders. As we hike through the pines, you’ll learn about old-growth forests and the lumbering era of Michigan’s past. Participants should bring a sack lunch and water for the hike. We’ll meet at the CNC Visitor Center and ride together in a 15 passenger van. To borrow snowshoes and poles at no extra charge, please indicate at time of registration.

Winter Bird Hike Thurs,12/16•8:30-10:30am•Ages:9+,under18w/adultJoin CNC Senior Naturalist Janea Little for part or all of this casual walk on CNC’s trails to look for the birds of winter. If there is a lot of snow, we’ll take the hike on snowshoes. Loaner binoculars are available. Be sure to dress in warm layers.

Full Moon StrollMon,12/20•4-6pm•Ages9+,under18w/adultEnjoy a guided walk, with or without snowshoes, with Senior Naturalist Janea Little. If there are at least four inches of snow on the ground, we’ll use snowshoes (call ahead to reserve a pair of CNC’s (631-0830) or bring your own) and enjoy the snowscape! If there isn’t much snow, we’ll just walk. Either way, be sure to dress for the weather, in layers so you can stay warm and yet not get overheated if we snowshoe. We’ll look for animal tracks, listen for owls and check for other sights and sounds of wildlife.

Adventures for Women: Snowshoe Hike Tues,12/21•5-7pm•Ages:14+,under18w/adultWhether you are a beginner or have strapped snowshoes on many times before, join CNC Senior Naturalist Janea Little for a walk about our trails. We’ll look for animal tracks, birds and other points of interest and enjoy the snowy scenery. Pre-registration is required to reserve a pair of CNC’s snowshoes. If you have your own snowshoes, pre-registration is not necessary. If there isn’t enough snow for using snowshoes (minimum 4 inches), we’ll turn this into an adventure hike!

Animal Skull Investigator Wed,2/2•7pm•Ages:9+,under18w/adultYou don’t have to be a crime scene investigator to identify a skull you find while out on a walk or digging a hole in your backyard. Each animal species has a unique skull, and using clues from the size, number and type of teeth, eye holes, brain cavity, and other characteristics, you can determine which you have found. This program will be held at Green Point Environmental Learning Center located at 3010 Maple Street in Saginaw. It is co-sponsored by the Friends of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and Chippewa Nature Center. What Was It Like? Tues,2/8•7-8pm•Ages:12+,under18w/adultOozing lava, grinding ice, crashing waves and raging fires are part of the fascinating history of the landscape we call Chippewa Nature Center. With the help of geological profiles, old photos, a radiocarbon dated wetland, surveyor and trade post records and hands-on items, Senior Naturalist Phil Stephens will help you envision what the land you walk and bike upon here used to look like. You will be able to better picture the changing environments in which Native Americans camped and Europeans settled, as well as mark shifts which have occurred over the past century. Bring your questions!

CNC Annual Meeting: Spring on the Yukon Delta: Waterbird Paradise Mon,2/21•7-9pm•AllAgesJoin birder and photographer David Stimac as he recounts the two months he spent with researchers at a remote camp on a Black Brant colony at the edge of the Bering Sea. From Willow Ptarmigan on a wintery landscape to a green tundra landscape filled with nesting waterbirds, Dave will share his experiences through his images made during the short subarctic spring.Each spring, millions of waterfowl and shorebirds return to Alaska’s Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge to nest and raise their young. The refuge encompasses over 20 million acres in southwestern Alaska and is one of the densest breeding areas for waterfowl and shorebirds in the world. Emperor Geese and Spectacled Eiders return from the Aleutians and nearby offshore waters. Black Brant arrive from Baja, Mexico. Longer distance migrants like Bar-tailed Godwits come back from wintering areas in the southern hemisphere. Funding for this special program is made possible by the Dale Dean Natural History Speaker Series.
