Between 1000 and 1200, many women became nuns and entered convents. Convents were ideal places for study and writing. Most learned women of the Middle Ages were nuns. An example was Hildegard of Bingen. She was head of the convent in western Germany. Hildegard also composed church music. Her work is remarkable because at that time, men were primarily the ones writing music for the church.
