This represents a significant cost saving from our school budget, but we welcome your feedback on the changed way of delivering school information. First I want to introduce our new staff members. I have no doubt the whole school community will welcome the important contribution each of them is able to make to strengthening even further the educational opportunities of our students. Ms Jane Lin did her tertiary studies at the University of Sydney and her double qualification to teach both Maths and Mandarin is tailor-made for our current needs. Jane has previously taught Maths with great success at Parkes High School, and most recently at Rose Bay Secondary College in Sydney. Ms Laura Campbell has joined us from Scotland for this year, as part of an international exchange program: Mr Andy Core is away teaching in her Scottish school. We feel a little guilty that Laura has seen so much rain for the start of her time here, but are doing our best to convince her that we also have sunshine. Laura has settled in well in spite of it all and we look forward to her sharing new skills with both teachers and students. Ms Natascha Gehrke, a local girl who has recently completed her degree and teacher training at the University of Newcastle, joins our Science staff. Like Jane, Natascha has dual accreditation. Her specialties are Science and PE. Our school counselling team has been strengthened by the arrival of the highly experienced Mr Wayne Murphy. Wayne is in our school on Mondays and Tuesdays and works mainly with students from Years 7, 9 and 11. I am pleased to report that Ms Leone Ryan will continue working with us as well: she will be in on Thursdays and Fridays, supporting students in Years 8, 10 and 12. Throughout this year staff will be intensively preparing for the introduction in 2014 of the new Australia-wide curriculum for Years 7 and 9 in English, History, Maths and Science. I am delighted to welcome back Ms Paula Madigan, who has returned to our school after spending a year supporting the training of teachers throughout the whole region. Paula’s brief will be to lead CHHS staff through the complexities of new curriculum development.

2 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

The Department of Education, recognising how important these changes will be, has granted all schools an additional professional learning day at the beginning of term 2. Hence teachers will be working on the new curriculum on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April, and students return for the new term on Wednesday, 1st May. Finally, on behalf of the school I wish to express our sincere condolences to the Treadwell family, Clyde, Britt, Courtenay and Steffaney. Sharyn, who recently passed away, was a wonderful and passionate supporter of public education, through her involvement at both Kororo Public School and Coffs Harbour High School. She also had a very high profile in the community at large, and tirelessly used it to draw attention to the strengths of our schools. Our thoughts are with Clyde and the girls at this sad time. Patti Kearns

3 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

We have had a great start to 2013 with students settling quickly and peacefully into their classes. Electives and subject choices for Years 9 - 12 have now been finalised and there will be no further changes unless by special arrangement with parents. New courses, including Film Making and Coffee Shop in Year 10 have proved popular with students and Year 11 students are making the most of expanded choices provided by our Combined High Schools group (C5) and close collaboration with TAFE. The Prefect team have already stepped up into their roles and performed extremely well in their duties so far. The last weeks of wet weather have been particularly challenging for students during breaks but we are pleased with the level of co-operation in general. Each year group is allocated a covered area including corridors, library and classrooms to spend rainy recess and lunch breaks. When the weather is fine, we have opened the oval area for students at recess to encourage active play and increase space available for students as we recognise that particularly for Year 7 students, the chance to let off steam safely between classes is very important! Year 7 have settled quickly and teachers report that they are working very well in their classes and producing quality work. Our thanks to their very enthusiastic and caring Year Adviser, Mr Shaun Hardy, who has been 'on call' every day to assist students to settle in and adjust to High School. Students seem happy and engaged in their lessons and most are eagerly planning and hopefully doing a few jobs at home to help finance the camp on 18 - 20 March. Parents sometimes find High School a confusing place to navigate and wonder who they should contact to discuss issues and concerns. The Front Office staff have a lot of general information about events and excursions and can help direct your concerns to the appropriate person. In general enquiries are directed to:- the Year Adviser for your child's general wellbeing, attendance and overall progress; the Head Teacher Welfare for Health Care plans and social issues including harassment and

bullying; the Faculty Head teachers for your child's learning and excursions in a specific subject; the Deputy Principals for serious or ongoing health and wellbeing, behaviour, suspensions and

unresolved issues of a general nature; the Principal for enrolment information, large school events, ideas for improvement, complaints

about staff or procedures or ongoing unresolved issues. We also have specialist staff including the Counsellors Mr Wayne Murphy (Mon, Tues) and Ms Leone Ryan (Thurs, Fri) the Learning and Support Teachers Mrs Raelee Smith and Mr Marek Paszkowski, the Careers Adviser Ms Dionne Court and the Transition Adviser Mrs Trina Neville, available to discuss programs of support with parents. Students are encouraged to set goals for themselves in their learning and to strive to achieve their best this year. A steady and sustained approach to tasks, particularly for senior students, is vital for success. We encourage all students to participate actively in all that we have to offer in enrichment, excursions, sport and cultural activities. We try to influence students to take on new challenges and interests and to show courage in persisting with tasks that may at first seem difficult. We expect all students to be good citizens at school, to assist and show leadership to others, to resolve conflicts peacefully and to speak respectfully to each other and the teachers. Ms Kathy Steward

5 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

Welcome  to  a  new  year  in  English!    We’re  happy  to  have  Mrs  Madigan  back  with  us.    She  has  returned  from her year as a literacy consultant full of exciting new ideas. As Mrs Madigan steps into the new role of Head Teacher Teaching and Learning at our school this year, I will remain in the position of Relieving Head Teacher English. We are also glad that Ms Vlasto is with us again this year and we welcome Mr Mason to our faculty. We have some very exciting opportunities on offer this year. First up, in Week 7, there is a Writing Camp for Year 12 Extension 2 students from across the region. This will enable Extension 2 students to work with a mentor and develop ideas for their major work. As part of a regional focus to engage and extend passionate writers in Years 9 and 10, a creative writing camp,  ‘Love  to  Write’ has been planned for Week 9. Of the 30 students attending from schools across the Mid North Coast, a number of enthusiastic and gifted writers from our school were invited to attend and several have taken up the opportunity. These students will spend three days at Valla working with mentors and visiting authors on a series of workshops to develop and hone their creative writing skills. This is a wonderful opportunity and we are hopeful this camp will be offered in future years. Permission notes have recently gone home with Advanced English students in Years 10, 11 and 12 for a trip   to  Sydney  early  next   term  to  see  a  performance  of  Shakespeare’s  Hamlet at the Seymour Centre. Hamlet is one of our prescribed texts for Advanced English in Year 12, so it is wonderful to offer the opportunity to see a high quality live performance. The production by Sport for Jove Theatre Company has been highly praised. Year 12 Advanced English students will also attend a three hour Hamlet Symposium prior to the performance which will be invaluable to their study of this play. The morning after the performance the group will visit the Sydney Jewish Museum where they will be taken on a guided tour of the museum by a Holocaust survivor. Not only will this give students a deeper understanding  of  world  events,   it  will  also  enhance  the  students’  understanding  of  their  Area  of  Study  – Belonging for Year 12, and Journeys for Year 11. Numbers for this trip are strictly limited, so students wishing to attend will need to return their notes and pay a deposit quickly. Contact Ms Ion or Mrs Madigan for more information. Junior  students  may  be  asking,  ‘What  about  us?’ Never fear. You have not been forgotten! We will be offering students in Years 7, 8 and 9 a trip to see a Bell Shakespeare performance of A Midsummer Night’s  Dream at the Sydney Opera House in Term 3. More details will be given in future newsletters. Closer to home, we will be entering teams in the Premier’s  Debating  Challenge again this year. Our school has traditionally enjoyed a lot of success in debating and public speaking - something we are keen to continue. English teachers are currently taking names of students from Years 7 to 10 who are interested in joining a team and the competition will kick off next term. Ms Vlasto is also keen to offer debating training during Wednesday afternoon sport time next term and she would love to hear from students who would be interested in participating. I hope to see some new faces signing up for debating this year. It is a great way to develop skills in argument and persuasion, which you can then put to good use elsewhere! So,  we  have  a  year  packed  full  of  opportunities  ahead  …  we  hope  to  see  as  many  students  as  possible  taking advantage of them. Ms Deanne Ion Relieving Head Teacher English

6 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

So a New Year begins! Can I start by wishing our school community 新年快乐! (Happy Chinese New Year!). We welcome Ms Jane Lin to our faculty who will be teaching both Chinese and Mathematics at Coffs Harbour High School this year. The Languages faculty is also supported by Ms Anika Montgomery, Ms Gwyn Davies and Mr Adam Mason. Our Year 10 elective Chinese students are busily preparing for their upcoming trip to China. They are excited about the prospect of spending one day attending Chinese lessons in our sister school in Jinan. Students will also enjoy sightseeing adventures in Beijing such as trekking along The Great Wall and visiting The Forbidden City, before travelling to Xian to view The Terracotta Warriors. There will   be   plenty   of   opportunities   for   students   to   enjoy   China’s   unique   shopping   experiences   and   in  general, utilise their language skills. We are delighted to have a Year 9 elective Chinese group for 2013. Ms Lin has already reported that these students are already quite informed on Chinese customs and language. These students are encouraged to continue their studies in Chinese so that they may become Asia literate. Several opportunities will arise in the future for further communication and involvement with China. All of Year 8 are learning Chinese this year. They are to be commended on their enthusiastic approach toward learning Chinese. Students are constantly asking questions in class, demonstrating interest and this is always welcome. There are two important language and cultural events that all year 8 students are invited to attend this year. Please make a note of these dates. Further information will follow closer to the events: Buddha’s  Birthday  Cultural  and  Language  Experience  at  Brisbane  – Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd May 2013. Multicultural Day – Wednesday 31st July (periods 1 to 4). I wish you all a happy and profitable Year of The Snake and close with a photo of The Coffs Harbour High School group that visited China in September last year. Do you recognise anyone? This  year’s  swimming  carnival  was  a  wild,  wet  and  windy  event,  with  mainly  keen  house  supporters,  Year 12 students and competitors turning up. Despite the weather, all students, parents and staff continued to enjoy the day. The day kicked off with the traditional Jetty Salmon run where anyone can get wet. There was underwater and three legged salmons to be seen! The Year  12’s  managed to soak a few teachers and many students. Thank you to Mrs Court and Year 12 for supplying the barbeque lunch. On the racing front, we had Taylor Blay take out a new record in the 14 years Girls 50m Backstroke at 33.32 secs.

Thank you to Mr Henry and Mrs Pearce for taking the teams.

Congratulations to the following students who attended the Zone Volleyball Trials and made the MNC Volleyball Team: Georgia Newell, Matthew Newell, Elana Forrest and Austin Burrell.

Congratulations to Joshua Hunt and Clancy Dickson who both made selection for the 15 years MNC Touch Football Team. The boys will travel with the rest of the MNC Team to compete in the North Coast Trials in Kingscliff in March.

We have currently had five Coffs Harbour High School students travel away as part of the North Coast Team to compete in the NSWCHS Girls Softball in Mudgee. The five students included Kodie Vandenberg, Taylor Vandenberg, Georgia Neef, Greta Smith and Callie Winsor. The girls earned their places in the team through hard work, training and dedication to their sport. On Monday 18th February our school was visited by Country Rugby League (CRL) to promote the NRL’s  “Tackle  Bullying”  campaign.    Our  school  was  fortunate  enough  to  have  the  Newcastle  Knight’s  and NSW Captain Kurt Gidley and team mate Chris Adams (ex Bellingen Magpies Junior) to present the campaign. The players showed a video on Tackling Bullying and had a question and answer session with the students. After the official proceedings the players took the time to talk to the students, hand out free merchandise, sign autographs and even pose for photos. The players and managers commented on the excellent questions and behaviour of the students during the presentation. Craig Hundle School Rugby League Coach

12 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

Year 10 Agriculture have wasted no time settling in this year and have already been hard at work. The  students  inherited  a  crop  of  potatoes  from  last  year’s  Year  10  Agriculture  class.    This  crop  was  planted to grow over the Christmas school holidays along with pumpkins that flourished with the rain the area received. Harvesting was therefore a little interesting and the students did a great job digging up the potatoes whilst inflicting minimum damage to the pumpkin plants present. The students  have  also  drenched  the  school’s  sheep  with  the  assistance  of  Mr  Parish.    The  class learnt that using drenches effectively is critical in managing worms and preventing drench resistance. They also learnt about using good drenching techniques by following directions, using the right dose and placing the drench gun over the tongue to increase effectiveness. Students will continue to work with the farm animals throughout the year and will also go on to preparing their own individual plots for their use this year.

13 CHHS NEWSLETTER 2013/01

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year at Coffs Harbour High School. I would like to welcome all new parents and students who have chosen Coffs Harbour High School as their education and family for the next six years as well as all our existing parents and students. Firstly, I must begin by saying a HUGE thank you to Sal Malouf-Grice who has been part of our P&C family since 2005. During this time Sal has been a passionate supporter of our school and has worked tirelessly to help our canteen staff, support other members of the P&C, assist with the school uniforms, pack book packs, volunteer in the canteen to name just a few. She has also taken on the roles of P&C Vice President and as you’re  all  aware,  Publicity  Officer  for  our  P&C.    I  am  sure  most  of  you  have  read  Sal’s  enthusiastic,  funny  and  informative  P&C  News  with  each  School  Newsletter  and  her  ‘SMILES’  will  be  sorely  missed  by  us all. Our P&C meet at 7.00 pm on the first Monday of each month in the school library (not in the school holidays!!!) and our meetings usually run for about 1½ to 2 hours. We welcome any and all new members who are interested in joining and learning more about our school. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain more information about our school and it is an opportunity to hear first-hand from our Principal and Deputies about the day to day running of the school, positive achievements and other relevant issues. Parents also have input into resolving any problems the school may be tackling. You can also learn how we raise funds and have a say in how these funds are distributed. The vast majority of our fund raising happens through our wonderful canteen so if you are a parent or guardian or other family member who is able to spare some time, no matter how much (we are happy with one day a month, half a day, anything you can offer) we welcome you to ring Gail, Tracey or Deanna at the canteen and volunteer some hours. Our canteen is always looking for volunteers so please call 6652 4637 if you can spare any time at all and we will slot you into a time that suits you. Don’t  forget  that  our  canteen  has  most  of  our  uniform  needs,  with sizes being re-ordered constantly. The P&C contribute the funds we raise to our school community in a variety of ways. We purchase new equipment   for   our   kids’   classrooms,   such   as   brand   new   Apple   Macs   for   our   computer   labs,   new   sewing  machines for our textiles students, interactive SMART boards for classrooms, to name but a few. We have upgraded the amplifier system in our school hall, provided new sports uniforms to our PD/H/PE department, donated thousands of dollars to students who have reached State level or higher in sport and we donate $500 every   year   for  our  end  of   year   assembly   ‘academic’,   ‘sporting’   and   ‘citizenship’   achievement  winners.   As a P&C we make decisions about these donations based on discussion with the P&C parents who are at the meetings. It is very exciting to see our funds go towards improving the educational world of our children. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate some of our hard working teaching staff who have moved into new positions in 2013. Nick Henry has moved into the Head Teacher position for PD/H/PE – congratulations Nick! …   and Deanne Ion has moved into the Head Teacher position for English – congratulations Deanne! I would also like to send a sincere welcome on behalf of all of us to our new teachers - Jane Lin Maths/Mandarin; Natascha Gehrke, Science; Adam Mason, English/PE; and Anika Montgomery, English. I am also delighted to welcome back Paula Madigan who will be leading professional learning for teachers as they prepare for the implementation of the national curriculum in 2014. Once again welcome back everyone — we look forward to a wonderful year. Our school is evolving, growing and improving thanks to a wonderful group of dedicated teachers, students, volunteers and parents. The meeting held on Monday 4th March saw a new P&C Committee elected and they will be reported on in the next newsletter. Hope to see you at our next P&C meeting. Cheers Jen Woschitzka P&C Publicity Officer

Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and students with the costs of primary and secondary school studies. Around 1.2 million families have already benefitted from the first wave of payments in January 2013 – have you? If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could be eligible to receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and half paid in July. The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund (ETR) and is a much simpler system. You no longer need to collect receipts and payments are made  automatically  so  you  don’t  have  to  wait months to make a claim via your tax return. Unlike the ETR, you can choose how you use the payment   to   best   support   your   children’s   education   – whether it be school books, stationery, uniforms, school fees or excursions. Check your eligibility by visiting australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus and if you think you might have missed out on the January payment, contact Centrelink – either in person at a Centrelink-Medicare Office or by calling 132 468.
