Adrienne Turbeville collected the last major bowling title that was missing on her resume -- the Syracuse Invitational Queens Championship. Top-seeded Turbeville defeated fifth- seeded Rachael Thompson, 224-196, in the title match to win the crown at Lakeview Bowling Center on Dec. 5. The Queens was the last jewel of the Syracuse Women’s Bowling Association triple crown for Tur- beville as she won both the Van Wie Dou- bles and the Post-Standard Masters in 2007. “It means a lot,” Turbeville said of her victory. “I really wanted to win this year. This was something I wanted to prove to myself.” Turbeville led the 20th annual event from start to finish. She was the top quali- fier with a 911 four-game total, including a 268 game. Turbeville also led all players in the semifinals with a 746 three-game block. She averaged 235 for the tournament, which drew 39 competitors this year.. “I was pretty confident coming into the tournament,” Turbeville said. “I usually don’t do well in this tournament. I’m not sure if I’ve ever made the finals before.” In keeping with tournament tradition, Queens chairperson Jennette Adams pre- sented Turbeville with the Mary Peters Me- morial trophy, a gold tiara and a dozen pink roses. Turbeville won $400. Thompson, 20, won three straight match- es in the stepladder finals before falling to the top-seeded Turbeville in the champion- ship. Thompson averaged 215 for the tour- nament. She won $250. 2007 Queens champion Marni Vincitore, who qualified second behind Turbeville, finished third overall and cashed $175. She carried a 229 average and tied Turbeville for tourney-high game with a 268. Defending champion Courtney Radick qualified for the semifinals with an 871 four-game block but failed to earn a berth in the stepladder finals. Here is a look at the top five bowlers from 1926 and also the names of the men voted to the second and third All-Star teams as well their bowling team’s name.

Pictured at the top from left to right are Tom Carey, Herald Williams and John Martino. At the bottom are Jerome Williams and Easl Jaspers.

A look back in history: The Herald All-Star TeamsBy John Savage

Back in the 1920s until the mid-1930s, the readers of The Herald annually picked their choice for the best bowlers in Syracuse. After the votes were tallied, the individuals with the most votes were selected to either the first team, second team, or the third team each year.

The Herald had a great following for bowling articles. Readers were able to keep up with the bowler’s accomplishments which included results of matches and individual weekly averages. Many of the matches, which included strong teams going against each other, drew large crowds. These articles helped to keep bowling as a very high-profile sport locally.

John O. Martino, who was probably the most revered bowler of that time, also wrote bowling columns for The Herald. He never voted for any of the teams but the people of Syracuse always cast enough votes for him to be the top vote recipient for many years.

High school bowling launches new season

By Bob Piraino

The 2010-11 varsity bowling season is underway. Here’s an overview of the upcoming season.

There are a few new faces in the coaching ranks. Among them include Rick Leonardo at the helm of the Liverpool boys team. Leonardo took over for Mike O’Connell. Chris Clarke returned to coach the Liverpool girls team, replacing Peter Piraino. O’Connell will still serve as the Section III Boy’s Bowling Chairman as job responsibilities limited his ability to coach on a daily basis.

At Cicero-North Syracuse, Tom Feeney replaced long-time boys coach John Pizzuto.

Nottingham boys and girls teams have combined with Henninger this year. Bob Piraino is the coach for both the boys and girls. Erie Blvd. Lanes in Syracuse will be the host of Henninger/Nottingham home matches this winter.

Fowler and Corcoran also combined their girls and boys programs and they will be coached by John Natoli. Fowler/Corcoran squads will compete in the OHSL.

Utica Proctor and Rome Free Academy will compete as

independents in preparation for entry into the Tri-Valley League for the 2011-2012 school year. They will play a CNYCL schedule but all of their matches will be counted as non-league. The CNYCL, TVL and CSC will continue to play “home and home” matches at a variety of bowling establishments. The OHSL will still compete exclusively at AMF Strike-n-Spare Lanes.

In order to qualify for the Section III Tournament, a team must win 40-percent of its matches (or points). Teams can use league, overall or against teams of like classification to satisfy this requirement.

The Baker System will continue to be used for the sec-ond block of games at sectionals. It’s a system where a five-person team alternates shots in the same game for a 15-game total. At the end of each game, coaches have the option to use substitutes if necessary.

The team that wins sectionals will represent Section III in the state tournament. There is also a six-player All-Section team that will compete at the state level. The team is select-

ed based upon individual performances. The top average bowlers from each of the four leagues will earn an automat-ic berth on the All-Section team. The remaining two spots will be based upon the two highest individual three-game series from the sectionals. Only the top 10-percent average bowlers from each league will be eligible to bowl for those two spots.

The girls sectional tournament is February 13 at AMF Pin-O-Rama in Utica. The boys sectional is February 19 at AMF Strike-n-Spare Lanes in Mattydale.

This winter, the state tournament will be held at AMF Strike-n-Spare Lanes. The team event will be held on March 5 with the All-Section tournament on March 6. Section III chairs Mike O’Connell (boys) and Cindy Losurdo (girls) are coordinating the event.

Any business or individual willing to place an advertise-ment in the state program or volunteer at the tournament can contact Bob Piraino at [email protected].

Saliba’s   – Where Value Is Still Our Main Product

Here’s some exciting news from Saliba’s. As of November we have been serving as a Closeout Outlet for bowling balls and accessories! We are still operating in our usual capacity so, definitely come see us for all the latest equipment. However, to help us be most competitive and to bring you some less expensive offers in this tough economy, we will be handling closeout models and overstocks from the distributors at a fraction of the previous cost. I’m calling it Cliff’s Closeout Corner. So don’t shop around for bowling balls any longer. Make sure you get a ball with the correct top weight and pin position to match your delivery, along with our expert advice, at an Internet price right here Cliff’s Closeout Corner. Some prices may even be negotiable!! Some current examples are:

And don’t forget Gift Certificates for your favorite bowler on your Christmas list. (maybe for lessons that they wouldn’t pay for on their own.)

Something new every week! Also, look for our ‘Special of the week” if we have your e-mail. I’ll present a great buy directly to your ‘window’ every week as I find them and scoop them up. If you prefer not to receive a weekly e-mail, please let me know by responding to this letter/article.

Thanks for your patronage. I enjoy doing business with you and serving as your expert and

friend. I hope you’re off to a great start this season. If you are having any problems, don’t forget, I am the ‘Bowling Doctor’. I can diagnose your problem quickly and help you correct it. And remember, lessons are always available by appointment. Good Bowling, Cliff and Dick
