Happy Father’s Day! Chúc Mừng Ngày Hiền Phụ Feliz Día del Padre!

We celebrate Father’s Day, a day we honor all of our fa-thers for their sacrificial love for us. There are different ac-counts of how this holiday came to be. But the primary origin is attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She had heard a sermon given on Mother’s Day in 1909 when that day was being established as a holiday. Sonora’s father raised her & her 5 siblings after their mother died in childbirth & she felt that fathers should have a special day just like moth-ers. Local authorities supported this idea, and Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birth-day of Sonora’s father. It came to be observed nationally with President Calvin Coolidge’s support in 1924. But it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued the 1st presi-dential proclamation honoring fathers on the 3rd Sunday of June. President Richard Nixon decreed it a permanent holiday by law in 1972.

Fatherhood is a beautiful vocation to love, joy and heart-ache, expectations and anxiety. It is filled with challenges and, at times crosses, always trying to balance fatherhood with oth-er responsibilities such as work, the household, etc. We need to pray for both fathers and mothers to be good parents. It is interesting that we go to school to prepare for our careers. But no one teaches us to be parents. We learn through the experi-ences, both positive and negative, we have with our own par-ents and other parents we encounter, and through trial and er-ror in being a parent.

Fr. Alfonso Tran is being transferred as of July 1 after serv-ing here for 4 years. He is being assigned as a parochial vicar to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in northwest Houston (on Addicks Satsuma Road, off Highways 6 & 290). It is a huge parish with some 10,500+ registered households and a day school. They have 6 English, 1 Vietnamese & 3 Spanish Masses per weekend (3 Saturday Vigil Masses & 7 Masses on Sunday). There is another Vietnamese priest who is primarily responsible for the Vietnamese Mass. So Fr. Alfonso will be primarily responsible for the English & Spanish Masses. Like us, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton has a huge number of confessions.

There will be 2 farewell books for Fr. Alfonso for you to sign in the narthex. Hopefully these books will be available for this weekend, provided they arrive in time. They will be available for the last 2 weekends of June. Also, on Sunday, June 30 at 2:30 pm after the 1 pm Mass, the Vietnamese Men of the Sacred Heart were planning to have a reception for the Vietnamese Community for the feast of the Sacred Heart (feast day is Friday, June 28). This reception has now turned into also a farewell reception for Fr. Alfonso. Every-one in the parish is invited to this reception. Thank you Fr. Alfonso for your service to the parish!

Our new parochial vicar as of July 1 is Fr. Loc Phan who is serving now at St. Michael parish in Lake Jackson. More info will be forthcoming in the July 7 bulletin, introducing Fr. Loc to the parish including his picture.

I will be on vacation that last weekend of June, as well as through the first weekend of July, missing both the farewell reception and the arrival of our new parochial vicar. But I will have met with Fr. Loc before I go on vacation, and Fr. Loc is an experienced priest who will be fine without my presence. As for me, it is my understanding that I will con-tinue to serve you as your pastor (for better or worse ), beginning my 12th year here.

This weekend is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Please refer to p. 10 for knowledge of this important tenent of our faith. Remember to sign up for our parish Blood Drive for next Sunday, June 23—see p. 12.

Please come to the 5:30 pm Mass Sunday, June 23 for the Corpus Christi celebration. The Mass will conclude with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Sung Evening Prayer with Benediction. All of our regular 5:30 pm at-tendees are encouraged to stay if you are able to do so, but if that is not possible, it is understandable.

Our parish patronal feast day, the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, is Friday, June 28. We will have our normal 2 Masses at 7 am & 12:10 pm. But we will have an extra scheduled tri-lingual Mass at 7:30 pm. Please come.

Homily Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,

(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. E I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Universal Prayer / Prayer of the Faithful

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:

1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

If you enjoyed the music today and are curious about joining us and learning more about participating in the liturgy in this way, come sing this summer. At the end of July we resume our annual “Open Loft,” where you can join the choir for a day, or as many summer Sundays as you wish. Fun! Contact: Dr. Crista Miller, [email protected] Patrick Schneider, [email protected]

Co-Cathedral Choral Music continues throughout the Spring and early summer, as we continue to celebrate this holy season locally, nationally and internationally! Please see above for concerts and recitals—we’d love to see you here! Watch this space weekly for notes on the music and announcements. Wishing you a blessed Trinity Sunday!

Above: David Jonies, our recitalist on June 18. Described as a “gem” and an "impeccable" performer, organist David Jonies enjoys an excellent reputation among his colleagues as a concert organist and church musician. A native of Germany, Jonies currently serves as the organist and associate director of music at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago.

Next Sunday, June 23, will be Mary Joy Silmaro’s last Sunday at the Co-Cathedral. Mary Joy has been serving as our organ scholar for the 2018-2019 season, while pursuing organ studies at Rice University. This fall, she will begin as the full-time assistant organist at Christ the King Lutheran Church. As a part of this position, she will also serve as the accompanist for the Houston Bach Society. We’ve loved working with Mary Joy, and she’ll be truly missed next year. If you see her before or after Mass this week or next, please thank her for her service to our church!

Thank you Mary Joy!

You may have noticed the adult choir isn’t present this Sunday morning. We’re offi-cially off for the summer, although we will return for the feast of Corpus Christi. Open Loft choir 2019, a six week drop-in Choral experience, begins July 28 with music on the Eucharist. More info soon.

During the Summer, visit the following websites for fun and interactive family activities.

CATHOLIC MOM catholicmom.com True to its name, this site offers a plethora of tips, tools and reference materials for Catholic moms. Daily features include the Daily Gospel Reflections, Tech Talk and Book Notes. On Sunday, new Lectionary-based activities are posted, and there is a weekly giveaway of Catholic resources. Founded by popu-lar speaker and writer Lisa Hendey, catholicmom.com offers moms various ways to connect and build community by joining in book-club discussions or the Small Success linkups.

EQUIPPING CATHOLIC FAMILIES equippingcatholicfamilies.com - This site offers family activities, seasonal crafts, reading recommendations and more. Updated often, Monica McConkey also provides links to other sites (such as Pinterest), excellent Catholic resources and fami-ly-friendly catechetical materials. Equipping Catholic Families shares plenty of ways to involve your whole family in actively being Catholic.

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

• Pray the Sign of the Cross with your family. Use the prayer to bless your children at bedtime. As you pray the Sign of the Cross, trace a small cross on your child’s forehead with your thumb.

• Make a holy water font or dish for your home to remind yourselves that you come and go each day in the name of the Trinity. Get some holy water from church. Practice making the Sign of the Cross slowly and reverently. Talk about its meaning for us.

• The Church often uses symbols to summarize what we understand about the truths of our faith. Next time you go to church, arrive early and find symbols of the Trinity in your church. What do they tell you about our belief in the Holy Trinity?

• St. Patrick is known for his explanation of the Trinity to the people of Ireland. Read a book about the missionary work of this saint.

p. 12 Happy Father’s Day

A PRAYER for FATHERS

WE PRAY,

— For our fathers, who have given us life and love, that we may show them re-spect and love. — For fathers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope, and their family and their family and friends support and console them. — For men who desire to be fathers. — For fathers who have died, that God may bring them into the joy of his kingdom.

God our Father,

In your wisdom and love you made all things.

Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.

Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

This Father’s Day do not forget to thank our spiritual fathers, our priests, who selflessly give of themselves in serving us, the lay faithful, as “instruments of God’s divine grace”.

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY

The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery:

God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today's scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives. [Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch

The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.”56 The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men “and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.”57 (CCC 234)

The Trinity is a mystery of faith in the strict sense, one of the “mysteries that are hidden in God, which can never be known unless they are revealed by God.”58 To be sure, God has left traces of his Trinitarian being in his work of creation and in his Revelation throughout the Old Testament. But his in-most Being as Holy Trinity is a mystery that is inaccessible to reason alone or even to Israel’s faith before the Incarnation of God’s Son and the sending of the Holy Spirit. (CCC 237)

Religious Freedom Week: Strength in Hope June 22–29, 2019

The Week begins with the Feast of Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More, ends with the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, and in-cludes the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. This year’s Religious Freedom Week is also notable in that it includes the

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) and the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

SATURDAY—JUNE 22

In the pilgrimage of this life, hidden with Christ in God and free from enslavement to wealth, they aspire to those riches which remain forever and generously dedicate themselves wholly to the advancement of the kingdom of God and to the reform and im-provement of the temporal order in a Christian spirit. Among the trials of this life they find strength in hope, convinced that "the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18). -Apostolicam actuositatem, 4

Join us, June 22 - June 29, as we pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad.

Pray that, like Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, we might have the wisdom and the courage to be good servants of our country, though always servants of God first.

Reflect Religious Freedom Week is a fitting time to reflect not only on religious liber-ty, but on what it means to be both American and Catholic. Perhaps some-what ironically, two English saints point us in the right direction. We remem-ber the martyrs Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, in part, because they were steadfast in the truth, and thus exemplify courage in the exercise of conscience. They also show us what patriotism means for Christians. They loved and served their country. Thomas More carried out his lay vocation as a civil servant, while John Fisher lived out the clerical vocation as a most faithful bishop. At the same time, when forced to choose between the king of England and Christ the King of the Universe, they adhered to Jesus and His Church. We need the fortitude and wisdom to animate the Church today, as we navigate these tumultuous times. Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More, pray for us!

Stewardship Reflection:

The Most Holy Trinity Sunday: June 16

That we take time in silence, every day, to hear how God is calling us. “But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth...” (John16:13) Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help us know and live the truth. To prepare ourselves, we need to open our hearts to receive this gift before we can give it. Develop a daily prayer routine. Talk and listen to the Holy Spirit. This is best done in silence, when we can hear His response.
