Pastor’s Message

p. 3

September 24, 2017

Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

For many of us, a sense of ‘regularity’ might be returning to our lives since the flooding: work and school schedules, religious education. Yet for many, their lives are so severely impacted: trying to salvage their homes and vehicles; finding transitional homes or different permanent homes; or begin-ning the long process of re-building, finding and waiting for reputable contractors, securing replacement vehicles, filling out forms with FEMA, insurance, etc. And they are doing it in the midst of working, trying to carry on their family life and meet personal needs. How physically and emotionally exhausting this is. How awful is it to see one’s home and the amount of trash piled outside along the street, knowing it might be like this for a long time? Even if one’s home was not affected, to see those who were affected is disheartening.

I am still finding out about additional parishioners who were impacted either more or less severely. Yet in the midst of all this devastation and huge challenges, it is beautiful to see people’s faith, resiliency and even hope in this heartache. Let us continue to pray for all affected by this storm and all other natural disasters. Let us pray for those in the Caribbe-an islands who were so affected by Irma and now Maria. So many of these people are so poor, and their homes are not built normally that secure. We also remember those who are impacted by the 2 earthquakes in 2 weeks time in Mexico.

I have been in contact with some of the pastors whose churches were flooded completely (4 parishes) or other par-ishes where some of their buildings were affected by some flooding, leaks and other damage. Just like those whose homes were affected, the parishes are trying to recover, go-ing through all the same challenges. It is financially chal-lenging to run a parish and rebuild when so many parishion-ers are unable to provide support because they need their resources for their own recovery. One parish had to cancel their fund raising bazaar because so many parishioners could no longer give of their time and talent when they are trying to survive with their home situations.

Today: 2nd Collection—Debt Reduction Assistance with DACA, p. 9

Coming Events, p. 12

October is known to be Respect Life Month. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) each year puts out a series of topics on different respect life issues. There are 6 topics this year. Since there are 5 Sundays in Octo-ber, we are beginning the series with this bulletin. See p. 13 for the first topics: How to Build a Culture of Life.

Canon 1063: Pastors of souls are obliged to take care that their ecclesiastical community offers the Christian faithful the assistance by which the matrimonial state is preserved in a Christian spirit and advances in perfection. This assistance must be offered especially by: (1º-3º are omitted) 4º help of-fered to those who are married, so that faithfully preserving and protecting the conjugal covenant, they daily come to lead holier and fuller lives in their family. This is done in one of two specific ways at the Co-Cathedral.

We have encouraged Teams of Our Lady, a support group for married couples who meet in groups of 5-7 couples once a month to socialize and share a meal, pray and study some as-pect of the Church for further enrichment. If you are interested in this group, see p. 12 and contact Lenny and Mary Morley at 281-222-0470 or [email protected]

But if you are interested in enriching your marriage just as a couple, see p. 10 for information about a series entitled “Beloved” on our online enrichment called Formed, one of many different enrichment topics. If you need further assis-tance on this marriage enrichment, contact Selma DeMarco, our Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation.

There are some important Masses coming up soon, espe-cially the Red Mass for the legal profession and the Blue Mass for all in the law enforcement profession. See p. 12 for a list of coming, important events.

We know how special pets are to people’s lives, especially pets that were rescued with their owners in the recent flooding. So what better way to respect your pets than by having them blessed in our annual Pet Blessing on Saturday, Oct. 7 on the side drive next to the church. See p. 12 for more info.

Praised be the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Now and forever, amen! Hãy chúc tụng Thánh Tâm Chúa Giêsu đến muôn đời, amen! ¡Alabado sea el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús! ¡Por siempre, amen!

Homily Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,

(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

SUNG MASS SETTING

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:

1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

WELCOME BACK COR JESU CHOIR!

Our Adult Choir, Cor Jesu, has returned to singing on Sunday morning Masses. If you’re interest and would like to sing there’s still time to join us. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 PM in Cathedral Centre. This year our repertoire again spans the 1000 years from Gregorian chant to the present day, specifically with a theme of God as our ever-present hope in a time of trouble. Contact Dr. Crista Miller at [email protected] if you’re interested in joining. And, do remember that everyone in the assembly at Mass is our largest choir. Keep singing the liturgy!

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Children’s Choir

The SMAA Children’s Choir will resume this season with rehearsal and treats 5:30-6:30 on Wednesday September 27th. Rehearsals this year will continue during this after school Wednesday time. This year’s curriculum enhances the RSCM Choral Track with additional chant-based singing. If you’d like to schedule an audition for this advanced group of treble singers, email Dr. Crista Miller at [email protected].

CCE Music Curriculum: What are my options? It’s not too late to sign up for Royal School of Church Music training on Sunday morning—the CCE choral track! Late registration will continue until the end of the day Sunday, October 1st. This includes switching tracks, if, for in-stance, your child is signed up for the Music Appreciation track but would like to switch to the Choral Track.

The RSCM Choral track is an exciting new opportunity for students, grades 3-8, to receive liturgical-musical catech-esis in a 60-minute session, followed by 30-minutes of non-musical catechesis. RSCM stands for “Royal School of Church Music”—a 90+ year old curriculum, originally developed in England that teaches students fundamentals of music and liturgy through the experience of working together as a choir. Presently used by several local Catholic par-ishes, RSCM harmonizes well with our parish’s liturgical approach to CCE. The Church teaches that the Sacred Litur-gy is the most important thing we do. It also teaches that we should strive to sing the Sacred Liturgy. The RSCM cho-ral track thus offers our parish students an excellent way to grow as intentional disciples right at the heart of the Church’s life.

For more information about the new choral track please see the “Question and Answer” PDF document that Selma DeMarco has sent in parent CCE email newsletters. Also, please feel free to contact parish CCE and music staff with any questions about this new curriculum: Selma DeMarco [email protected] , Crista Miller [email protected] , or Michael Emmerich [email protected]

Mass in Honor of St. Michael - Next Sunday we will switch settings of the sung Mass Ordinary. We sang the Mass in Honor of St. Michael during Ordinary Time last fall. Although many of you may immediately recall this music we will do rehearsals prior to Sunday Masses. If you’d like to get a head start and are looking to jog your memory, we have prepared tutorial videos on our YouTube page. To watch and sing along simply go to youtube.com and search for “Co-Cathedral Music”—our music ministry’s channel. There you will find videos of the Mass in Honor of St. Michael.

Stewardship Reflection: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time: September 24

That we realize we are not only responsible for our lives, but for the lives of others. “So the last will be first and the first last”

- Ma hew 20:16 You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gi s with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our gra tude and generosity helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

Teams of Our Lady

As married couples, the goal is to grow closer together in love and holiness. Yet in today’s busy society, with forces and

stresses that can undermine both marriage & faith, where can couples find the time to connect not only with one another, but with Christ? A Team brings together Christian couples united by the Sacrament of Matrimony who wish, together, to deepen the graces of their Sacrament. Teams of Our Lady forms small community teams of 5 to 7 couples that meet monthly, share a simple meal, pray together and have lively discussions. For more info, contact Lenny Morley at 281-222-0470 or [email protected]

Educa on on Respect Life (the first of six topics)

The Problem Watching the news and reading the headlines, we may feel helpless seeing the heartbreaking lack of respect for human life. How do we respond when our efforts seem small in the face of the culture of death?

Our Christian Identity To understand more fully how to defend and protect human life, we must first consider who we are, at the deepest level. God creates us in his image and likeness, which means we are made to be in loving relationship with him. The essence of our identity and worth, the source of our dignity, is that we are loved by God: “We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son.”

We are called to divine intimacy, true communion with God, and we can grow in this closeness with him through daily prayer, reading the Scriptures, and frequent participation in the sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist.

Our Mission as Christians The knowledge and realization of how deeply we are loved by God elicits a response of love that simultaneously draws us closer to God and, at the same time, impels us to share his love with others.

Embracing a relationship with God means following in his footsteps, wherever he may call. Just as Jesus invited St. Peter and St. Andrew to become his disciples, he invites us to do the same: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19).

Being a disciple of Jesus naturally includes sharing the Gospel with others and inviting them into a deeper relationship with God. As Christians, our identity and our mission are two sides of the same coin; like the apostles, we are called to be mis-sionary disciples.

Missionary Discipleship This doesn’t necessarily mean quitting our jobs or moving to foreign countries. For most of us, our mission field is daily life: “Christ teaches us how to evangelize, how to invite peo-ple into communion with him, and how to create a culture of witness: namely, through love. A Christian life lived with charity and faith is the most effective form of evangelization.”

The first step towards living this life is allowing Jesus to meet and transform us daily. If we respond to his grace, our lives will show we have something beyond what the world offers: we follow a person whose love changes our lives, so we want others to also experience his transforming love.

When we live in union with God, open to his prompting, we’re more able to see the opportunities for witness and his guidance in responding to these opportunities. We may fear doing the wrong thing or saying the wrong thing, but we do not need to be afraid. Jesus promised his disciples, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

Identity Crisis As a society and as individuals, we often measure ourselves by false standards: by what and how much we do, our suc-cesses or failures, how others treat us, the degree of our pleas-ure or independence, etc. And when these changeable substi-tutes prove to be insufficient, or when we are faced with chal-lenges and suffering, we may feel helpless, alone, or aban-doned; we may be tempted to feel as though our lives have decreased value or worth.

But God’s love—individual, real, unchanging—is the true source of our worth, identity, and dignity. It really is not a question of who we are, but rather whose we are. Because his love will never change, nothing can reduce our God-given dignity, and nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives.

Our Response When someone is facing great trials, we need to meet them where they are, walk with them on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ’s love however he di-rects.

When a woman becomes pregnant, and her boyfriend threat-ens to leave if she continues the pregnancy, we need to lov-ingly walk with her. When family members or friends be-come seriously ill, we need to assure them that God still of-fers them something in this life, and they still have purpose. We need to consistently be with them every step of the way.

Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person’s heart; we simply need to follow where he leads.

A Culture of Life This is how we answer our missionary call. This is how we build a culture of life, a culture that joyfully proclaims the truth of God’s love, purpose, and plan for each person. Changing the culture is a process of conversion that begins in our own hearts and includes a willingness to be instructed and a desire to be close to Jesus—the source of joy and love.

When we encounter Christ, experience his love, and deepen our relationship with him, we become more aware of our own

worth and that of others. His love for each person is cause for great joy, and growing understanding of this priceless treasure mo-tivates us to share his love with others. Our lives are often changed by the witness of others; so too, others’ lives may be changed by our witness and authentic friendship with them. Let us go, therefore, and not be afraid. God is always with us. Source: http://www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/respect-life-program/2017/how-to-build-a-culture-of-life.cfm
