7. Blood Donation
Location: Hall/Lecture Theatre
Time/ Frequency: Irregular
Blood Donation has been a traditional activity of The English School. For many years, our students
have been participating in this programme with great enthusiasm, taking part in a very ambitious
scheme, which aims to cover all blood needs of Cyprus on a voluntary basis.
The teachers-in-charge and the students’ committee organise two main activities:
a) Members of the Pancyprian Blood Donation and Information Committee, present the idea of
Voluntary Blood Donation in Cyprus and the success factor of their efforts. They also refer to
other relevant matters i.e. hepatitis B etc. This lecture is for the 6 Formers only and is presented
in English.
b) The actual event of Blood Donation takes place in the School, usually in the Hall, starting at
8.30 a.m. The duration of this event cannot easily be predicted; this depends on the number of
donors and the possible health problems the medical team of the general Hospital will face.
The benefit of organising the Blood Donation at the School is obvious; it gives the students the
opportunity to cover very urgent needs of their teaching programme e.g. tests, Science practical
experiments, and then participate in this activity.
Teacher in Charge: Ms. Dora Hassapopoulou, Ms. Ioanna Nicolaou
8. Economics Society
Years: 4, 5, 6, 7

A-Level or IGCSE Economics courses. Students will be asked to find articles from the local and
international press that will be used as stimulus material to initiate such discussions.
Occasionally, we may also have the chance to watch a film which explores issues like globalization,
poverty, debt, the rise of emerging economies such as China and India, the current economic crisis and
others.
Most importantly, the Society will hold regular
“surgeries” during which extra help will be
offered to all our students in every year and
course. Such help may take the form of re-
teaching certain parts of the syllabus that
students would like to be exposed to once again
to improve their understanding or revision
surgeries to help students cope with the needs
of either the mock or final exams. The overall
aim of the surgeries is to address students’
individual needs in their courses.
The Society will also organize trips to local
businesses and other events such as lectures by various professionals on a number of issues.
The above activities will prove to be extremely useful to all those students currently studying
Economics and/or Business Studies either at IGCSE or A level. Such activities will enable students to
understand how theory works in practice and how it often fails. Also, the activities organized by the
Society help in broadening the horizon of students with regards to current affairs.
The timetable for the “Surgeries” planned for Year 5 students covering Year 4 topics is below. (This
has already been given to students).

Creative writing can technically be considered any original composition of any type of writing which
serves primarily the need for keeping records of significant experience, the need for sharing experience
with an interested group, and the need for free individual expression which contributes to mental and
physical health.
The aim of the Creative Writing Club is to allow the students to express their emotions and to help
them to strengthen their skills and writing techniques. Creative writing is usually taught in a workshop
and students submit original work for peer critique. Students also format a writing method through the
process of writing and re-writing and they are given the opportunity to come in contact with the work
of distinguished writers through a more creative way. The Creative Writing Club started 7 years ago
and it runs its own blog spot “Grafouccino.” You can follow http://grafouccino.blogspot.com. This
year’s aim is to participate in competitions, meet with authors and to celebrate the international day of

sponsorships, to apply towards the design of a Formula One car using a computer aided design
program.
This inspires the students to use IT and learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, marketing, media
skills as well as teamwork to apply in a competitive and appealing way providing a great educational
experience.
Following their work and the building of the model car, the teams compete against each other in a
speed competition, (on our recently acquired track) first on a national level and then on an international
level for the trophy Bernie Ecclestone F1 in Schools World Championship, where they will be judged
on the basis of their business plan, the sponsorships they have secured, speed, the design and
aerodynamic efficiency of their car as well as their oral presentation.

Some General Information regarding iGeo
The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is an annual competition for students between the ages
of 16 to 19 years old, for the most knowledgeable Geography students from all over the world.
Students chosen to represent their countries are the very best, chosen from thousands of students who
participated enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiad. The iGeo consists of three
parts – a written test, multimedia test and a substantial fieldwork exercise requiring observation leading
to cartographic representation and geographical analysis. The programme also includes poster
presentations by teams, cultural exchanges, and time for students to get to know their fellow students
and explore the sites of Belgrade.
The aim of the Olympiad are to:
Stimulate active interest in Geographical and Environmental Studies among young people
Contribute positively to debate about the importance to the quality of Geographical knowledge,
skills and interest among young people.
Facilitate social contacts between young people from different countries and in doing so,
contribute to the understanding between nations.

The Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients
and Friends (PASYKAF) is a voluntary, non-
governmental health association, registered
charity (no. 525). PASYKAF is dedicated to
fighting cancer through education and awareness and improving the quality of life of cancer patients
and their families through advocacy and service which are offered free of charge. We are solely on
charity for fund raising for this great cause.
Listed below are our services and support programmes which are available in all districts across free
Cyprus:
Home Nursing Care
Psychological Support to patients and relatives
Physiotherapy
Lymphoedema Service
Day Care Centres where patients can participate in groups and activities which provide
companionship, friendship and support.
Transport Service to patients living outside Nicosia and undergo treatment in oncology
departments and centres in Nicosia. Our bus service is available in all districts.
Promoting Public Awareness through campaigns, workshops and presentations in order to
enlighten and educate the public about prevention and early detection of cancer.
These are provided across Cyprus to more than 5000 cancer patients and to their families every year,
by a specialized team of health professionals and staff, consisting of 70 people.
Joining the PASYKAF Charity Society is a fantastic opportunity for young people to not only offer
something back to the community, but to also be challenged to develop their entrepreneurial skills,
creative skills and confidence.
PASYKAF club will run monthly at the school, at irregular dates. At these meetings, the students will
be given a variety of different tasks to carry out individually or in groups, in school or at the comfort
of their own home, thereby completing the necessary monthly hours required for DOE. They will be
monitored by one of our PASYKAF people and a liaison with the school. These tasks may vary in
nature, giving the students the opportunity to develop a number of skills and to take part in various
different activities.
They will be asked to assist in organizing, setting up and taking part in the various monthly charity
events of our organization, such as the autumn charity fun day at the Acropolis park, the Stasicratous
Street Party, the Christmas and Easter bazaars….
They may be asked to organize a “hot chocolate / lemonade and biscuits” break during school, for all
their fellow students to sponsor “Coffee with love” which runs all year round, by donating €2 each.
Similarly, they may be asked to organize a bake sale. This will involve finding and informing sponsors
for the raw materials, creating electronic flyers to inform their fellow students and the school via emails
32 | P a g e
or the electronic boards and finally, having their products on sale and convincing their friends to buy.
In the same way, they may be asked to promote the PASYKAF bracelets or promote ruffle or charity
tickets amongst their fellow students. An initiative may also be undertaken to collect second hand
items by their fellow students in school for our PASYKAF Charity Shops.
During our November and December Christmas Bazaars and our Easter Bazaars during March and
April, we will ask for their invaluable help, not only by assisting with the charity’s handmade
Christmas decorations, Easter candles and Easter eggs, but by also using their imagination in producing
their own products, may it be necklaces, bracelets and key-rings, cakes, biscuits and cup cakes, or even
handmade decorations. They will then be asked to set up their own stall, man it and sell their products.
One of the tasks students may be given could even be to put up a presentation-lecture to their peers or
even their own teachers and parents, on issues of prevention and early detection of cancer. This will
involve their own homework, (with our training and guidance as always), on what this charity is about
and how we can help ourselves with the prevention and early detection of cancer…… And this is
where young imagination comes in. Students will be challenged to find fun and exciting ways to do
these presentations, so that they do not lose their audience. May these be rap songs, a short theatre, a
home produced video, or whatever else they can surprise us with! This could be presented during the
World Cancer Day (4/2), on the first week of February.
Throughout the year, we also arrange events such as Bingo nights, play days at playgrounds, theatre
performances and a number of cultural events, whereby students may take up the task to inform and
convince their friends and friend’s families to attend.
They may also be asked to update our contact lists, find new members and new sponsors, or analyze
statistical data, invaluable for our cause.
Alternatively, students may also come up with their own event, such as a theatrical performance with
collaboration with the school theatre club, a musical performance with collaboration with the school
choir, presentation and sale of their artwork, a Bingo event, a Backgammon competition, a school
BBQ, a school party, organizing an event during No-Uniform Day, or whatever else they may think
of!
Come and join us for fun and creative volunteer work!
