large-scale offshore and coastal renewable energy projects.’ Report by PML Applications Ltd, SAMS and IECS for NERC)

Illustrating the potential for marine space use within Offshore Wind farm footprints

Seabed Ranching–(Natural Stock Relay e.g. Mussel seed) (N.B wild mussel stock enhancement / laying cultch for oysters COWRIE mitigation options)

Access Problems for dredging gear?

- Lynn (Wash) problems with seed mussel extraction

– North Hoyle 2010 Trial, seed mussel relay possible

- Gwynt Y Mor scour protection needed – dredge access?

Lamma 100mW Wind farm (ERM for Hong Kong Electric)

-Met Mast erected Mar 2012 / construction due 2014

-Stakeholder LG outlining AR plans

-Govn. Based (AFCD) gazetted AR in HK since 1996

AR Enhanced Fisheries/‘Ranching’ – Hong Kong

UK Artificial Reef (AR) Experience:

-Poole Bay (PFA)

-Loch Lhinne (waste rock dust)

-Portland rock (with lobsters)

(N.B lobsters, scallop, oyster hatchery enhancement / Scour protection AR COWRIE mitigation options)

Potential scour protection using by-products?

Fixed Gear (finfish) – Hong Kong Southeast HK 200mW Wind farm (Wind prospect for CLR)

-Final permissions due in 6 months (then aquaculture trial can go ahead)

-Waters deemed unsuitable for seaweed (too warm) and shellfish (too clear)

-HK$500,000 finfish (Grouper) trial planned with University support

-Finfish trial planned with x2 net cages in vicinity of Met mast

-Ex-fishing vessel use for 24hr patrol boat around Met mast

-Driver for aquaculture trial ‘social good’ and championed by developer

-Power generator (CLR) happy to allow co-location (so long as no conflict)

-Govn. compulsory decommissioning of fishing fleet

-Unauthorised marine traffic restricted

-AR also under consideration

-Licensing process very similar to UK model

Planned wind farm Nordergründe. Figure (A) shows the map of the area (bird’s eye view) displaying

18 offshore wind turbines (numbers without brackets) and six single mussel plots designated by

the wind farm company. Four of these six designated plots were calculated according to our mussel cultivation

projections (numbers in brackets). Figure (B) presents a design of a single mussel plot within a

group of four wind turbines (not to scale) (modified after Michler & Kodeih 2007; Buck, own data).

Stakeholder Engagement Process – What can we learn?

Co-location = Co-management = Co-operation?

UNLIKELY TO BE ‘ONE SIZE FITS ALL’

MERMAID: Innovative Multi-purpose offshore platforms:

planning, design and operation.

H2OCEAN: Development of a wind-wave power open-sea

platform equipped for hydrogen generation with

support for multiple users of energy

TROPOS: Modular multi-use deep water offshore

platform harnessing and servicing

Mediterranean, Subtropical and Tropical

marine and maritime resources

-Is Co-location the future?

-What is European R&D, resources allocation and policy direction?

-Is there scope for sharing?:

Services / Infrastructure

Profit / Risk / Mitigation

Surveys / licensing process / monitoring

Project Structure Funding:

• Welsh European Fisheries Fund (EFF)

• ~50:50 ratio of Funding to Time CIK from Project Partners

• 45 days dedicated to deliverable production

Duration:

• 9 month project

• Start date: 01 Oct. 2012 / End date: 30 June 2013

2. Known past studies & trials

3. Identify suitable forms of shellfish aquaculture

4. Permission & tenure

5. Requirements for a safe & compatible approach to shellfish

culture in wind farms

6. Nature conservation interests

7. Key policy drivers from all sectors

8. Anything else…

End point = guidance / recommendations on what shellfish culture

types most suitable now or in near future – not MUPS!
