Now In Its 25th Year – Special Scholarship to Be Awarded Frank James – SkyLine Scholarship Ten scholarships with a total value of $22,500 are scheduled to be awarded this spring to children of Sky- Line and SkyBest telephone service customers to assist them with the cost of a college education. Five $1,000 scholarships, renewable up to four years, will be awarded to students who will attend a four-year college or university. Five $500 scholarships, renewable up to two years, will be presented to students who will attend a two-year community/technical college. This also marks the 25th year of the cooperative’s college scholarship program, and to commemorate this milestone, SkyLine will provide an additional one-time $5,000 scholarship this spring to a student from the pool of nominees for this year’s scholarship program. The Frank James-SkyLine Scholarship was estab- lished by the Board of Directors in 1987 and is named in memory of Frank James, longtime SkyLine board mem- ber and former president, who was a strong advocate of education, having served as a teacher, principal and later superintendent of Ashe County Schools. Again this year, SkyLine will sponsor two high school juniors to be among over 100 students to attend the Foundation for Rural Service’s 2012 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. Now in its 18th year, the FRS Tour brings rural stu- dents from across the United States to Washington, D.C. for a four-day visit from June 2 through 6 to some of the most historical sites in the nation. While here, students also learn about the telecommunications industry, as well as the regulatory and legislative processes. Educational sessions on these topics are greatly enhanced by both site visits to the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in addition to meetings with industry leaders and members of Congress. The permissive dialing period is well underway, which means that callers basedin the 919 Area Code region may now use10-digit dialing for all local calls. By March31 mandatory 10-digit local dialing will berequired for callers based in that area.

While this does not locally impact ourcustomers, we do want you to be aware ofthis latest area code for the state, andgoing forward, you may notice telephonenumbers for residents or businesses in that region with the new code, and it willcontinue to be a long-distance call fromSkyLine-served areas to the 984 area.

SkyLine Supports Heart Association

In keeping with tradition, SkyLine willagain provide the phone bank for theAshe County Heart Auction on Wednes-day, March 7, at Family Central. This isone of the local chapter’s largest fund-raising events for the year, as businessesfrom across the county contribute numer-ous auction items for bid. WKSK Radio(580 AM) will air the auction beginningaround 9 a.m., with continuing updatesthrough the afternoon.

Black Bean & Corn SalsaIngredients:1 can black beans, rinsed and drained1 can corn, rinsed and drained1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes, drainedFresh chopped cilantroRed wine vinaigrette salad dressing

The students also are given ample time to explorethe Nation's Capital and its many attractions. While here,the group visits such sites as the Lincoln and JeffersonMemorials; the Korean, Vietnam and new World War IIMemorials; Mount Vernon, home of George Washington;the Smithsonian Museums; and, much more.

To be eligible to apply, the student’s parents must re-ceive telephone service from SkyLine or SkyBest, and thestudent must meet the following program requirements:• be a student at a public high school in the co-op’s five-county service area (16 or 17 years old at the timeof the program);

• write a letter of application, including future plans beyond high school;

• submit a 500-word essay on one of three selected topics;

• have a minimum 3.25 grade-point-average(GPA);

• obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher orschool official;

• exhibit demonstrated leadership in campus organiza-tions;

• exhibit demonstrated community involvement throughvolunteer activities. Applications for the Youth Tour will be available at

area high school guidance departments and at all SkyLineCustomer Centers beginning Tuesday, March 6. The application deadline is Friday, April 6.
