SEEKING HOMES The Dan Breen and O'Dwyer Cups
~at will th~ day
bring? Will the Dan Breen Cup travel in
story for the first time to MulUnahone or return to the more familiar territory of Thurles? The O'Dwyer Cup would find a warm welcome In lovely Aherrow, but is no strtlnger to Clonmel.
To the hurling replay firstly, many claim that Thurles Sarsfields are now in the driving seat and that their Ileme is on the cup. They st"yed ci!llm even when Mulhnehone went six points up. This composure hbs been the main improvement in their game this year Their hurling ability was never tin
issue. Point by point was registered in II controlled way. The strong breeze late In the Slime was II big help to tlred legs. The Introduction of Mattie O'Dowd and PlIt Lawlor worked, both had a mlljor influence on the closing stages. However it still could be argued that they did not playas weU as they tlrt: C.!lpable of. Leadership is required throughout the field, it w"s Idt to Ger ·Re~r" O'Grady to t"ke on tMt role. Brendan C"rroll "nd Eddie Enright are e)(perienced hurlers but need to stamp their authority more. Lar Corbett showed tooches of his skill ,a shot across goal must have caused a few Mullinahone hearts to flUtter.
Muilinahone should have
Liz Howard won. Apart from the strong breeze, they should not have allowed Thurles back into the game. Earlier the issue of the sideline ball and the subsequent fouling of a free were somewhat unsettling. However it WllS carelessness In the last ten minutes that was the real reason for their relinquishing such a lelld . Losing PlIui Kelly WllS a disappointment not Just to the team, but "Iso to the rMny spectators who admire this talented hurler. All credit to replacement Philip O'Shea who had a fine game. Paul Curran was the pick of the defence. Eddie Carey pf"yed splendidly and Brian O'Mearll upped his game considerably in the second half. Eoin Kelly, still hampered by a c,,1f injury, managed some superb points. However it was John Leahy who stole the applause "nd the show. He was the man who worked so hard for his team , with the touches of class and artistry that -'Ctom the game. What are the chances that we will see him In Blue and Gold next year.
The outcome of this game is finely balanced.
Gallant Aherlow, playing to claim a first ever-senior championship title will have neutrlll support against Clonmel Commercials. Ahertow had to play reigning champions Fethllrd, twice I"st weekend to get to the final. That takes its tOll , ,
physically and mentt!llly. The Moroneys, Peters', Leonards, O'Sheas , Fergal Clifford and captain, Mt!Irk O'Brlen will have to c,,11 on "II the resources of courage, determln"tion and spirit &gainst a very experienced Commercials side . TrelJlendous spirit is an Integral part of psyche the Aherlow men.
Intercounty gOt!llkeeper, PhiJly Rylln is one of the best In the game. Benny WlIlsh, Fergal O'Caliaghan, Kevin Oempsey and Eamonn HlInrllhan are other fine footbaUers.
They defellted loughmore -Castleiney in the other semifillo!ll. The winners today face WlIterford club, The Nlre.
Thanks to all the spectators in Semple Stadium last Sunday who St!Ive such 1I
warm "nd well -deserved reception to the Kitruane Me.
Oonaghs hurlers of 1977,'78 lind '79.
They enjoyed the day. Thanks to the Tlpper"ry Stllr and Anner Hotel for honouring them. We salute the U12 footballers who take the field todllY, a specilll young friend Mark Gennery is in action. Mark from Portroe is most knowledgeable about hurling, football and most other sports.
Enjoy the action todt!ly.

CLONMEL COMMERCIALS - a C
lONMEl Commercials enter to-day's final with a proud history behind them. Founded In 1932, (Ionrnel
Commercials have enjoyed frequent success in all grades of football since.
Twdve years after their formation, the club's famous green and gold jerseys had been carried to victory on the playing fields all over TIpperary and had won south and coonty titles In "II g,,,des.
The club's first taste of county success came In the form of a mirlOf title In 1935. A

Arguably the club's greatest achievement was winning three county titles in-a-row in 1965,1966 and 1967. The captain on all three teams was the I~te 8rian O'C~Il&ghan. Mick Egan, Mick O'Connell, Tom Pollard, John McNamar~, ~nd Peter Archibald were some of the players on this marvellous

county senior title Commercials have been beaten in three finilis. 1994 was the club's fourth appearance In the prOvincial final. They have yet to succeed In lifting this elusive title. In 1990 they came closest to winning the title, only to loose out after a replay and extra time to Dr.Crokes.
In April 1999 Commercials became the Inaugural winners of the. Munster Club league when they defeated close rivals Fethard in the final played at ClonmeL
A proud history Indeed but we hope today that a new chapter Can be opened by capturing our 14th county senior crown title.

in 1993 ttS a 21 year old and has been a virtual ever pre· sent member at the team since. An intelligent foot~lIer,
his use of the ball is vital to the ployers around him. He is the holder at 1 county senior medal and has represented his county ot minor, under·21, and senior In both hurling and foot~lI .
Today Is Poudie's fifth county final oppellrance for Com· mercials and it would be a fitting tribute to his efforts down the: yeors it he were to captain the club to it's 14th senior crown.

The lInnouncemer]t this week by the (ounty Tip~rary G.A.A. Board that Michael Doyle, LkIm Sheedy and Kevin Folt.
I"IlIve been selected as the new Tipperary senior hurliog lJ'IaMgement team is II very welcome one incked. Wh~e the special committee established to
find .succeSSOl'5 to Nicky English, Ken Hasan and .Jack Btl'sm cOO'ectly took their time in making the decision -ll hugely importllnt one tOf the Premier County, there WlIS nontheless" certain amount of urgency in having the new te"m In place liS soon as possible. The fact that they will get to see the County Firnl replay is pr~bty a bonus to them and to Tipper,,!)' hurling fans
Michael Doyle is no stranger to Tipperary folk and Is a man who brings II lot of e~rience to the job. He is seen throughout the length lind breadth of the county tlttending sames and there Is scarcely a more well Informed mlm when it comes to knowing pillyers and their strengths and weaknesses. Michael of course was at the helm In the len Gaynor, Murt Duggan era and saw Tipperary tlvough to the All-Ireland Final in 1997. He knows exactly what it will take to go that extra step - a step that Nicky, Ken and Jtlck managed In 2001 .
llam Sheedy still looks enough to be playing for the county. An avid hurling fan, - ... " Utlm brings massive enthusiasm to the positlon tlnd he has proven while Boss of the Tipperary Intermediate hurling team thtIt he Is a shrewd operator with a lot of tactlcal knowhow. Interestingly enough, Uam IiIlllrf

played under Michael Doyle when the HoIycrosslBallycahili man was last involved in the senior set-up - the Portro( man was wins back on the All-Ireland team of '97.
Kevin fox has been ttlfu, done thtIt. He is well known in G.AA Circles and his coaching tactics are second to none in West Tipperary. Kevin has observed hur1lng at many levels and his experience will ensure that there is a nice blend in the management team. Kevin knows all there is to know about West TIpperary hurling and no doubt he wil' be scouring the division to tum over fresh new talt:nt in the coming weeks and months.
The triumvirate have the clfficult task of following in the (ootsteps of /"IICky, Ken and Jack - not an easy thing to do However, they have their own ideas on wtM:re they want the ....-hole process to go. The rucleus of a good team still exists - after all TIpperary Just lost

MIChael, Liam and Kevin have TIpperary
hurling followers good wishes for
their term at the helm.

A Gentle Giant retires by JIM (Seamus) FOGARTY
Kilkenny
Decl~n Rylln of Clonoulty should Mve a page aU to himself In the Annals of Tipperary hurling. It should be
painted in letters of gold, one of his county's colours.
He is possessor of a proud haul of medals, Including three senk>f All-irelands, won in three different decbdes, one U-21 All-Ireland, as captain, four National le09ue medals, two County Championship medals and two All-Star awards. He has captained his county also at senior level. He has played both minor and U-21 football with TIpp.
Declan WtlS born In July, 1968, and had hurling in his bloodlines, as his uncle, 1J. Butler won an All-Ireland U-21 ~dtli with Tipp in 1964. In 14 seasons of championship hurlins, Oedan missed only three games. He scored 9-64 In championship hurling and failed to score on only four occasions.
His former m~nager, BlIbs Keating, st~ted that ~ fit Ded~n was the dllff.",nco, .•• between winning losing. We would not h~ve won ~n AIIIreland title w,,:hout him. When

As Denis W~lsh of the 'Sunday Times' stated "Ryan left ~ rich legacy by retiring ~t the top. Such w~s the nimbleness of his wrists and the whipcord strength In his ~rms, the hurley seemed like ~ matchstick".
Indeed, Decl~n was probably the strongest hurler of his gener~tlon . He neVE:r used his strength unfairty and w~s wellliked by both te~m-makes ~nd opponents. Known ~s the strong silent man In the Tipp c~mp, he gave Immense pleasure to ~II followers of the gre~test g~me .
How often h~ve we thrilled to the brushing aside of opponents, the bounce of the ball {rom hurley to sod to hand, the look ~t the posts, and the 9f'&eeful striking of points from under the St~nds th~t regul~rly brought gasps of oXImiration from the crowds. DecJ~n sold so many dummies that he could Mve opened ~ ~by shop!
Now that your Inter-county c~reer in the "field of Dreams" Is over, may you forever w~lk In fields of gold. Dedan, thanks for the many cherished memories, which will never foXle .
Eddie Carey •••• • (Mullinahone) •••••
The past week has provided us with some miliar t/llklng points.
Mlck McCarthy h4s terminated his tenure as Irish manager, John Conran and Michael Doyle have tllken the envi· able task of leading their respective counties into championship battle in 2003 . With the week not yet complete, Mulllnllhone can still crellte their own piece of history. TodlIy, however must produce 11 winner with the prestlgl~ honour of being labelled the county's latest hurling chllmplons. Back to the "'Hllmill,,, cauldron of Semple Stltdlum the green lind red hlIve monitored the extensive threat of their opponents lind now know that overcoming the blue brigade Is well within their grasp.
A small framed, fllif-haired, midfield dynamo has been the inspir&tloo. All equlllly enersetic lind wholehearted individual, Eddie (afley has been consistent throughout this senior hurling chllmpionship campaign. l.4st Sundlly he ~ve lin admirllble performllnce at midfield even returning In defence to help retrieve possession from dangerous situations. His two weU·tllken long·r&nge scores &Iso deserve s.pe:ci&1 Pfllise. He could &imost smell the sweet scent of success yet It W&Sl"l't sufficient to earn suprern&ey. After 1I week of
by Leonard Fitzgerald
thought and added time to reflect lind refocus, he returns In anticiplltion of repellting such 1I display with possibly a little e)ltra required.
Currently a sales rep. in the Kilkenny region, Eddie is second in a family of four. His f&ther, Tom played senior tootb!lll tor Mullinahone while: his grand-uncle Mick Cahill played senior football championship tOf Cork durIng the 19.040'5. Eddie Is the proud holder of three Ail-Ireland ml!:dals. HI!: was 1I PIInel member on the Tipperary team that claimed the Nenagh Co·op Tournament in Sempll!: Stlldium against the: Banner County in 1994. Two years later he was an Integral PIIrt of the premier county In winning the Irish Press Cup, their only such
"
title within a twenty year radius lasting back to 1982. Eddie graced the Croke Park surface as a second half substitute In the drllw lind repillY ltglIinst the tribesmen. He along with PlIul Kelly brought the first ever minor hurling medals back to the club. His last AU-Ireland medal thus fllr clime on September 8th Illst when Mullinahone claimed the AlB - KIImacud Crokes AIl·lreland Se:Vf:ns title belltlng former winners Portroe , Kiltormer lind the """"SPIes of Clarec;.,stle in the concluding stag€s. From hurling With Callan e.B.S. to playing Fitzgibboo Cup with Cork I.l, Eddie has also endured his share of disappointments. He hlls lost minor, under·21 lind senior finals lIlIlIgalnst West opposition. At 19, he played for the full hoor in the 1997 county senior final, fi'Vf: years on, his f1'IlIturity and positiooal sense have developed accordingly. He lIlso holds south divisiorlal hurllrlS medals at almost every grade. Last September defelltlng Killenllull!: by 2·18 to 0-12 was his third senior triumph on the field of play.
However, a vlctOlY todlly would be monumental in the transforf1'llltlon of a club like Mullinllhone . Eddie hlls already played In two senior finals, today he's hoping to ITIIIke it third time lucky!
