Climate Protection
Compliance Market
- Kyoto Protocol- EU-Emission trading- Environmental laws
Mainly involved: - Countries - Entities - plants/industry
Reason: Legislation
Non-Compliance Market
- Reducing of Emissions(e.g energy, mobility)
- Compensation of emissions
Mainly involved: - Responsibly acting companies- end user, public
Reason:Companies want to takeresponsibilty and to havebetter marketing
We can only meet the challenge together

Credibility, transparency und efficiencyfor an integrated Climate Management
• Development of a climate strategy– Definition of targets: What is ecologically
and economically reasonable?• Identification und implementation
of the reduction potential– Analysis of processes/ benchmarking/
implementation of reductions• Compensation of unavoidable
CO2-emissions: Climate Neutrality– Which emissions are unavoidable?
Calculation and compensation of them
Smart Communication: How can the target group - employers, customers, partners and/or public - most efficiently be reached (cost value ratio)?
Page 9
Technical focus on Climate Neutrality
• For an estimation of developed CO2-emissions different parameters can be consulted: – primary energies like gasoline, diesel, oil– secondary energies like electricity, steam, heated water– raw materials which contain carbon like coke, calcium carbonates– secondary products like ceramics, glass, steel, paper
• Climate Company estimates for clients the CO2-quantity per product, per service or per event and adds it to a total result
• The client will be advised on pro and cons concerning emotions, transparency, control, comprehensibility for different kinds of certificates
• Climate Company buys through Emissionshändler.com on behalf of the client emission certificates in the given quantity, deletes them and issues the confirmation to the company

Different kinds of CO2-certificates
• There are more than 10 types of CO2-certificates (Kyoto-Protocol) • To achieve Climate Neutrality in the Non-Compliance Market Climate
Company and Emissionshändler.com uses EUA2, CER and VER– EUA European Allowances are the CO2-certificates in the European Union
issued by governments of states in a limited number– CER Certified Emission Reductions from climate development projects
(mainly developing countries) in every case the CER comes from additional measures which are controlled + certified every year
– VER Verified Emission Reductions from climate development projects (mainlydeveloping countries) in any case the VER comes from additional measureswhich are controlled + certified
• EUA has an immediate, controllable effect but less emotion• CER/VER is cheaper (at present 18 € per ton CO2) and has a much
higher emotional effect, but they are not so easy to be controlled
Page 12
Example to use EUA CO2-certificates in Non-Compliance Markets
• The ETS (European Trading System) in the first trading period2005-2007 gives every complied company (mainly plants and industry) a limited number of CO2-certificates for an annual use to cover their CO2-emissions
• Complied companies may only exceed their CO2-output if they buy more certificates, price of EUA2 fluctuates between 18 € and 28 €per ton CO2
• Non-complied companies can buy + voluntarily delete VER and CER CO2-certificates from the international market. They also can use EUA1/EUA2 from the closed European system. Therefore this given quantity of CO2 in the respective period is no longer available
• This kind of reduction is limiting the certificates available – a very direct and controllable way to protect the environment
Page 13
Example for a VER-Project in Jamaica
• The Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulb Replacement Project replaces incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs in hotels in Jamaica
• Over their lifetime, the bulbs use 25%of the electricity needed for conventionalincandescent bulbs
• Today the project has replaced over61,000 bulbs creating 41,000 MWh ofenergy saved. It will save until 2009 approximately 27,000 t CO2
• The cost of an energy efficient light bulb is lower than of ten normal incandescent bulbs
• Although logically, the cost of buying the bulbs is attractive, peopledo not like spending the larger amount of money upfront
• Now, the price of the lightbulb is reduced from what it would other-wise be, due to the extra revenue from the emission reductions

Mazda in Germany: An innovative marketing campaign
• Situation:The climate discussion began in Germany in January 2007 in a large scope, consumers gota bad conscience to drive cars or extrude CO2
• Idea:Climate Company offers a certificate and compensated the CO2 in international projectsfor 15,000 km per car – The certificate is a climate gift and comes for free, in case theconsumer buys a car from Mazda
• Result / cost value ratio:• Priced media response (speciality in the web
was more than five times higher than the real costs (press-releases in papers or web)
• Campaign was prolonged and sucessfullyimplemented in five regional countries in Germany
• More than 600 tons CO2 were compensated
Page 16
The Mazda campaign of Climate Company in detail
• All participants in the mobility sector in Germany candrive a car from Mazda which saves the whole CO2per year in a climate project in Guatemala:– Step 1: Visit your mazda trader in your home town– Step 2: Ask for a mazda-car with CO2-neutrality – Step 3: Buy the car and take your environment gift
for free– Step 4: Fix your certificate on your cars front-window
and put your registry card in your wallet, keep yourclimate share for showing at home
– Step 5: Now, you can drive the next 15.000 kilometers„climate neutrally“
