Collaboration is the process of two or more people or organizations working together to

realize or achieve something successfully. Collaboration is very similar to, but more closely

aligned than, cooperation, and both are an opposite of competition. Most collaboration requires leadership, although the form of

leadership can be social within a decentralized and egalitarian group. Teams that work

collaboratively can obtain greater resources, recognition and reward when facing competition

for finite resources.

Page 9: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

• We are here to discuss session design with the End Goal in Mind - What are you trying to achieve?

• We are here to approach session planning from a curriculum topic, based on principles, organization, flow, progressions & Learning …. Not Drilling!!!

• We are here to reflect on session plans designed by ourselves & our peers. Self-evaluation/reflection starts critical thinking, helps change and leads to continued development (seeking out the answer).

LET’S DIVE IN!!!SESSION DESIGN

Page 11: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

• What is the Purpose of your Practice Topic? What are you attempting to achieve?

• What Principles of Play Apply in teaching this Topic?

• What is the foundation/organization of your training session? How/why will it flow?

• What consistent themes/coaching points will you be applying? What progressions will you use?

• How is it going? How will it continue to go? How can I paint a clearer picture or produce “High Def” Success?

Page 12: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

1. What is the Purpose of your Practice Topic? What are you attempting to achieve?

• This is initially about your Vision - philosophy, playing style & game model (Personal? Club? Country?). What is the end goal & what does it look like (practice being specific)?

• In what way does this topic fit into the building blocks of your visualization above? (keep in mind the tactical implications, not just technical) Link it to THE GAME!

• Example - If your topic is passing, why do we pass? where do we pass? when do we pass? Not just HOW we pass. Develop a complete understanding to be able to deliver and plan a complete session.

Page 13: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

2. What Principles of Play Apply in teaching this Topic? Attacking, Defending?

Attacking POPs:

• Dispersal• Support/Depth• Penetration• Mobility/Movement• Surprise• Individualism

Defending POPs:

• Pressure (in the modern game)

• Delay• Depth/Support• Concentration• Balance/Cover• Control/Restraint• Surprise

2. What Principles of Play Apply in teaching this Topic? Attacking, Defending?

• In every session, we must find ways to reinforce the Principles of Play in order to frame the Game Situation & link our exercises to Real Gameplay.

• What principles are observed/required in relation to the soccer skills you are teaching?

• How will the design of your session emphasize opportunity for those principles to be explored & applied? Without being forced.

• What principles can you address that link the goal of your exercise to real gameplay? (this will help you frame your stoppages & transition to SSG)

Page 16: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

3. What is the foundation/organization of your training session? How/why will it flow?

• What will the organization structure of your practice plan be? Why did you chose this format? Pros/Cons of each you evaluated?

• What core components do you need to ensure are included? i.e Technical Skills? Juggling? Physical Literacy?

• Are the exercises new or familiar? Are they interchangeable layouts (i.e. cones, groupings, ect) Can you easily go from one to the next?

• What have you done to optimize the flow of the session? Have you set break times? Discussion times? Explanation & Demo times?

• Is it fun? Will the players be engaged? How will you motivate them or change the atmosphere if the energy is not there?

Page 17: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

4. What consistent themes/coaching points will you be applying? What progressions will you

use?• What macro-concepts will your session embrace?

(think style of play/game model) What will the mantra be behind each and every of your players decisions?

• How will that change throughout the different exercises of your session? Is the theme consistent throughout the session? Is it progressive or stagnant?

• Once they become comfortable in each exercise, how will you assure the challenge/skill ratio is maintained? What do you keep “in your back pocket” that can switch to challenge the player or add competitiveness to the session?

Page 18: Coach Collaboration Session: Planning a Session within a Club Curriculum Jan 4 2017

5. How is it going? How will it continue to go? How can I paint a clearer picture or produce

“High Def” Success?• Can you step back & re-visit what you want your

players to achieve in your session? Are they close to your goal? How do you know?

• Are they thinking & learning or are they doing?• What/where are they having success?• What/where are they having failure? Is it valuable

failure?• How can you make your VISION clearer to the

player? Can you refine the environment to make it “High Def” for the player to gain understanding?
