1. COACH EDUCATION FRAMEWORK

Gymnastics Australia released the Coach Education Framework nationally in July 20131. The Framework is designed to be rolled out over a 3-year period.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has approved and endorsed the Coach Education Framework. Accreditation courses delivered fall within the National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). The Coach Education Framework is a competency-based framework.

A. Coach Pathway

A coach in most instances will enter the pathway at Beginner and will progress through each level of the Framework. A coach may be exempt from completing parts of, or one or more levels. See each accreditation level in this document for further information regarding exemptions. 1In July 2013 Gymnastics Australia released an eight-level Coach Education Framework but this was

streamlined to six levels in September 2014. Changes in September 2014 were:

removing Intermediate Bronze

combining High Performance and High Performance Gold to create High Performance (Gold)

removing the qualifications Certificate III, IV and Diploma in Sport Coaching in the interim until relevant Gymnastics units of competency are available in the Training Package.

One change in October 2015 was the removal of the Certificate II Sport Coaching from the Framework.

1High Performance (Gold) will be awarded to the Head Coach of the program/club where the individual gymnast is training. It is recognised however that in many instances the personal, day to day, full time coach of the athlete may have had a significant contribution to the gymnast’s performance outcomes. If this is the case, more than one coach may receive an accreditation. Each case will be considered individually. 2The only eligible coach to receive High Performance (Gold) for a team event is the appointed Head Coach of the team.

B. Technical Membership

There will be no Technical Membership fee for a Master Coach.

C. Requirements to maintain an accreditation

A coach who is awarded Master will always retain Master as an honorary title. A Master Coach must meet the updating requirements for a High Performance Coach if the coach is active to be covered under the Gymnastics Australia National Risk Protection Insurance Program. 1The Master Coach title will be awarded to the Head Coach of the program/club where the individual gymnast is training. It is recognised however that in many instances the personal, day to day, full time coach of the athlete may have had a significant contribution to the gymnast’s performance outcomes. In such instances more than one coach may receive an accreditation. Each case will be individually considered. 2The only eligible coach to receive a Master Accreditation for a team event is the appointed Head Coach of the team.

9. SUPERVISION AND MENTORING

This section defines a certified Supervisor in the context of the Coach Education Framework and the requirements regarding the supervision of an accredited Beginner Coach.

A. Certified Supervisor

A Beginner Coach must coach under the supervision of a certified Supervisor at all times or until an Intermediate Accreditation has been awarded. The minimum requirements to become a certified Supervisor are as follows:

Current Technical Member

Current Gymnastics Australia Coach Accreditation at Intermediate Level or above

Successful completion of the Gymnastics Australia Online Supervisor Training course

The Supervisor certificate remains current for three years. Supervisors who are not active during this period will be asked to repeat the online course or to attend alternative training. A supervisor who is active (has provided supervision to a Beginner Coach) will have their certificate re-issued.

In making the decision to allocate a Supervisor to oversee the work of a Beginner Coach, consideration should be given to the level of maturity and technical knowledge of the Supervisor.

A Supervisor must have an appropriate level of maturity to make good decisions while providing supervision, particularly with regard to managing risk.

A Supervisor must be technically qualified to undertake this role, with the ability to give technical support and feedback to a Beginner Coach. Not every Intermediate Coach will be ready to provide supervision. Time and workplace experience may be required to develop a good level of technical knowledge prior to completing Supervisor Training and supervising others.

Gymnastics Australia highly recommends that a Supervisor is at least 18 years old.

B. Supervision of an accredited Beginner Coach

Clubs must ensure that a Beginner Coach is under supervision at all times until the coach is awarded an Intermediate Coaching Accreditation. A Beginner Coach has the competencies to coach an equivalent skill level as an Intermediate Coach but always under supervision.

Page 28: COACH EDUCATION FRAMEWORK AND ACCREDITATION POLICY€¦ · Diploma or Degree in Teaching (except Physical Education teachers – see above) ii) Special circumstances training The

Coach Education Framework and Accreditation Policy

September 2015 Page 28

It is acceptable for up to three Beginner Coaches to be under the supervision of one supervisor. The Supervisor must be on the gym floor in the proximity of the Beginner Coach(es).

The Supervisor and/or Club need to exercise a duty of care to participants and the Beginner Coach, and discretion should be made when allocating a Supervisor to a Beginner Coach. The Supervisor has received training via the Gymnastics Australia Online Supervisor Training course, and has been taught to ask the question ‘can I adequately supervise the Beginner Coach if I…?’ Club administrators/managers making decisions about who should supervise which groups should consider the question, ‘can the Supervisor adequately supervise the Beginner Coach if I ask them to…?’

The supervision rules allow some flexibility and are designed to allow Clubs to make supervision decisions based on the situation, such as the age of the Beginner Coach, coaching experience of the Beginner Coach, and the age, maturity, technical knowledge and experience of the Supervisor.

C. Mentor for an Intermediate Coach in training

An Intermediate Coach in training for an Advanced Coach accreditation will need a mentor to support training in the workplace. The mentor should:

hold an Advanced Coach Accreditation or above and where possible this should be relevant to the Gymsport

provide supervision and guidance for the Intermediate Coach, but does not need to provide direct supervision on a daily basis

assist with and undertake workplace assessment tasks with the Intermediate Coach

ensure the Intermediate Coach in training works within their level of competence (see Appendix 1)

exercise a duty of care to the coach and participants.

Not every Advanced Coach will be a suitable mentor and consideration should be given to the technical knowledge of the mentor, their level of experience and time to commit to the role. If required, two or more mentors may work with an Intermediate Coach.

10. FIRST AID

A First Aid Certificate is an accreditation requirement for a coach with an Advanced

Accreditation or above. A First Aid Certificate must be renewed every 3 years, with

an additional requirement to update CPR annually.

Please check the accreditation section to see if the First Aid Certificate is a pre-

requisite for the face to face course.

A. First Aid Certificate exemptions

An Advanced Coach or above who previously held a Gymnastics Australia Level 1,

2 or 3 Accreditation and was transitioned into the current Framework has until 1

February 2016 to hold a current First Aid Certificate. From 1 February 2016, a First

Aid Certificate will be a requirement to renew technical membership.

The following professionals are exempt from a requirement to hold a current First

Aid Certificate:

Registered nurse

Paramedic

B. First Aid course and code

The current First Aid Course requirement is:

HLTAID003 Provide First Aid

or

HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and

care setting

As of 1 February 2017, all coaches advanced level and above will be expected to

hold the appropriate First Aid Certificate as requested by Gymnastics Australia.

Please note that the First Aid course code, name and content changes on a regular

basis to reflect current needs as recommended by health industry experts. GA will

inform all coaches of updates as soon as they become available.

11. SALTO AND INVERTED ROTATION

To coach a salto (somersault) or skills involving flight and inverted rotation without hand support, it is a requirement that a coach must:

hold an Advanced Accreditation or above OR

successfully complete and maintain currency of Advanced Module 1 for ACR, GfA, MAG,TRP, TUM, WAG.

A coach can coach drills in preparation for coaching a salto in accordance with Appendix 1: What can I coach in the gym? A. Salto requirements exemption

An Intermediate Coach transitioned into the Coach Education Framework will receive a grace period, so that they can continue coaching a salto while training for an Advanced Coach Accreditation or Advanced Module 1. An Intermediate Coach can coach a salto in the gym until 1 February 2016 if all of the following criteria are met:

The coach held a Level 1 Gymsport Accreditation prior to July 2013.

The coach attended a salto workshop prior to July 2013.

The coach is a current Technical Member of Gymnastics Australia.

The coach must exercise a duty of care to all participants and work within their level of competence.

Please note that States/Territory Associations may continue to run salto workshops, and coaches can continue to attend the workshops for professional development and to gain updating points however attending the workshop does not provide credit towards the Advanced Coaching Course. B. Salto definition

Gymnastics Australia’s definition of the salto is: o flight and rotation of 360° forward or backward o flight and rotation without hand support.

For further clarity, images of a salto are shown below. In this example, a tuck position is shown but other body positions are accepted.
