Coal Fired
Power GenerationNanticoke
• In Ontario, the Nanticoke power station (opposite) supplies about one-fifth of the province's energy requirements on a given day.
• Ontario Power Generation says the station provides enough electricity on an annual basis to power as many as 2.5 million homes.

Coal is often brought by rail or boat to the power plant site
where it is moved by conveyor belt into the power plant.

Air heater used to transfer heat from
the outgoing exhaust gas to the
intake combustion air.
The air heater pre-heats the
combustion air and improves plant
efficiency.
The unit consists of a large rotating
basket, half the area located in the
hot gas stream and half located in the
cold intake air stream.
Heat removed by the rotating basket
is carried into the cold air stream
where it is used to preheat the intake
air. Flexible seals next to the basket
minimize gas/air leakage between the
fluid streams.

Nanticoke tops pollution list

The Nanticoke power generating plant is Ontario's single worst polluter when it comes to small particulate matter released into the air, a new study says.
The coal-fired plant on the shore of Lake Erie accounts for 14 per cent of such matter released in the province each year, the Ontario Clean Air Alliance says.
"Small particulate matter are a prime cause of asthma attacks, heart attacks and bronchitis, " said OCAA chair Jack Gibbons. "Nanticoke is the number-one source in Ontario of these pollutants."
Gibbons says this study once again highlights the health dangers of coal-burning plants.
The McGuinty government has promised to phase out all coal generating stations by the year 2007.
A spokesperson for Ontario Power Generation noted that the plant meets all current provinical guidelines for emissions.

The absorber module
is a counter-current design.
The slurry is sprayed
downward from a series
of headers and nozzles
and scrubs the flue gas as
it moves upward through
the tower. Continuous pH
monitoring is used to
control the addition of
fresh reagent. Density is
also monitored continuously
to control the addition of
make-up water to compensate
for evaporative losses.
The gas rises through the
gas distribution tray, contacting
a froth of slurry.

Ontario’s long range plan to close coal fired
power plants (see www.ieso.ca)
"Today I am pleased to announce that the United States
will sponsor a $1 billion, 10-year demonstration project to
create the world's first coal-based, zero-emissions
electricity and hydrogen power plant..."
