The salt is in good condition this year for the first time since 2013.The new 2017 Porsche Panamera has been unveiled and it is a beautiful car. The spy shots I have seen of the 2018 Cayenne look good also. Porsche continues to increase sales and these new models will definitely help.

Please continue supporting our club. Don’t forget that our Board meetings are the first Wednesday of every month at San Luis Country Club. Please feel free to attend. New ideas are always welcome!

Breakfast at Scotty’s on July 9

With about 30 CCCR members, we had a very good turnout for breakfast at Scotty’s on July 9th. Under new ownership, Scotty’s food and service has improved, and there were a lot of smiles and enthusiastic talk. We return to Scotty’s for breakfast on August 6. Join us!

Right, Ken Finney makes announcements while Allison Edwards and her mother look on.

Below, Walt Branscome heads one of the tables. Walt brought a brand new Boxster with the new turbo-charged four cylinder engine. James Lopes and Zorica Ljaljevic, below left, took the silver-blue Boxster for a test drive, and returned with bigger smiles than when they departed.Walt had two more new Porsches delivered the next day for the Gathering of Friends. See more about that on pages 12 and 13.

11The Coastalbreeze August 2016

Above, the breakfast plates look as good as the food on them tasted. The smiles say it all. Right, new CCCR member Tony Diaz proudly poses with his first Porsche, a 2008 Cayman S. A close match with Chuck Hoops’ Cayman, Tony and Chuck compared options and modifications. We hope to see a lot more of Tony.

2016 Gathering of Friends

The 2016 Gathering of Friends was held at La-guna Lake Park on July 10. With 104 gorgeous European entrants, beautiful weather, some green grass, and an enthusiastic crowd, this year’s event was one of the best raising over $6000 for Jack’s Helping Hands.

Porsche winners were George Stone with a first place and Richard Crowe with a second in G Class. In M Class, Gordon Capel was awarded a first with his GT3 RS; Susan Foreman got second with her Cayman S, and Craig Smith got a third place with his 996.

For more on this event, visit www.gofcocours.org.

13The Coastalbreeze August 2016

2016 Gathering of FriendsThis year the entrants and spec-tators were treated to a live per-formance of blue grass music by the band “Last Stage West” that included our own Bern Singsen on guitar and vocals.

Thanks much for all the hard work by Bern Singsen, Craig R. Smith, Bob DeVries, Dave Dawson, Ken Finney, Hamp Miller, Bob Kitamura, Ed Swain and Gary Thies to make this event a huge success.

61st PORSCHE PARADE at JAY PEAK, VERMONT by ALFRED ABKEN

On June 19-25, PCA held its 61st annual Porsche Parade at the Hotel Jay, and surrounding area of Jay Peak, Vermont. As I missed the event in Indi-ana last year, I was looking forward to attending Parade this year, mainly because I had never been in the New

England states, outside of New York. I didn’t think my backside could survive a cross-country drive in my Porsche. So on June 15, I flew out of SLO airport to Boston, via Phoenix. I spent two nights in Quincy, Massachusetts, which is just south of Bos-ton. I picked up a rental KIA Rio, (I know, enough said about that…) early Thursday, and drove to Connecticut to have lunch at O’Rourke’s Diner, in Middletown. This is one of the featured diners from the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives show. On my way back to the Boston area, I took two-lane roads back through Rhode Island. It was a very nice drive, considering what I was driving, and the countryside was lush, green, and gorgeous.

Sunday morning Parade check in began. This year, seating for the Concours and Final Victory banquets were selected during registration, and it made the check in procedure go much more quickly. This was a very good thing for me, as I was scheduled to help direct traffic from 10-2. Following my work shift, I dropped off a couple of framed photos I had taken along to enter in the Art Show. Sunday eve-ning was the Welcome Party.

In the event you have never attended a Porsche Pa-rade before, it is dependent upon volunteers to run most of the activities. If you do a minimum of two shifts, you qualify to attend the Volunteer Lunch, which was held on Saturday. You also get a T-shirt.

Again, if you have never attended before, there are so many activities planned, it would be quite the challenge to attend them all. A good thing about not having a Porsche at a Porsche Parade, assuming you enter the Concours, is that you do not have to arrive early, and spend a couple days cleaning all the dead bugs off the front of your car. The big event Monday was the Concours d’ El-egance. Cars were displayed on a couple fairways of the golf course. Monday evening was a free evening. No banquets scheduled. There was a dinner cruise scheduled on Lake Memphremagog. There was also a Buffet Farm to Table, but this was already booked up when I was registering.

61st PORSCHE PARADE at JAY PEAK, VERMONT by ALFRED ABKEN

Tuesday was a very busy day. The TSD Rally start-ed in the morning. There were a couple of driving tours offered. An ice cream social was held, and sev-eral seminars were offered. I took the drive to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream in Waterbury, Vermont. At first we drove past their location, through Montpelier, past the state capital, then into Berlin (and I thought that was in Germany), Vermont to the Fresh Track Farm Vineyard and Winery where we had lunch, and tasted some of their wine. Their maple wine was very interesting, and quite enjoyable.

There were plenty of “Moose” signs along the way, but I never saw one.

After lunch, it was back up to Ben & Jerry’s for a tour and a taste of their ice cream. YUM!

Tuesday evening, the Concours Ban-quet was held. Mark Porsche, the young-est son of “Butzi” Porsche was in attendance as the representative of the Porsche fam-ily. Mark also drove in the autocross Wednesday morning.

Wednesday morning, I worked at the autocross site. It rained lightly most of Wednesday morning. Even-tually, the sun came out, and it was a gorgeous day. One of the surprises of the event was seeing a 918 Spyder on the autocross course. What a wicked sounding car!

Wednesday afternoon, a Beer Party was held in hospitality. I can report there are some interesting beers, ales, and ciders being brewed in New Eng-land.

Wednesday evening, the awards banquet was held for the TSD Rally.

Thursday morning was the second, and final day of the autocross. In conjunction with the autocross, Michelin held a Drive and Compare event at the Newport airport, near the autocross site. They provided two new 911 Carrera S’s. First, we got to drive a Carrera S Cabriolet with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires on all four corners. The fronts were 245/35 ZR 20, and the rears were 305/30 ZR 20. We were given two laps on their short course, then we were put into a Coupe that had the same tires on the front, but the rears were Dunlop Sport Maxx in the same 305/30 ZR 20 size. We were only given one lap in this car. I noticed more push in the coupe. These new cars with the smaller displacement turbo engines are quite remarkable. No typical turbo lag.

Thursday, before I drove the Drive and Compare, I took the lunch cruise on Lake Memphremagog. It was a dry day with plenty of puffy white clouds to make it another gorgeous day.

Also on Thursday morning, the Gimmick Rally was held. This year the participants were given the coordinates of several covered bridges, and the persons that saw the most, and photographed them, and returned with the least mileage were declared the winner.

Thursday afternoon, PCA Past President Manny Alban, and Dieter Landenberger, Porsche Histori-cal Archives Manager, did another discussion of the 40th Anniversary of the Transaxle cars.

16The Coastalbreeze August 2016

Thursday evening was a free evening. During registration, I had signed up for a dinner cruise, but my spot on the waiting list never opened. I do not recall seeing it during registration, and I did not sign up for it, but I ended up with a ticket to a Brats & Brew Buffet. This turned out to be a lot of fun. The Welcome Party’s at most Parades typically have German style food for dinner. This year that did not happen, but the Brats & Brew Buffet made up for that. Then even had an Oompah Band playing music!

Friday morning, the Tech Quiz was held. Here is an opportunity to see if you have been paying atten-tion to the latest issues of Panorama, and how much you can remember of Porsche’s history. There was a time when I used to do fairly well on these quiz-zes, but that time seems to have passed me by. Still, it is an interesting way to spend part of the morn-ing. Later that morning, a Tech Academy was held. Members of PCA’s Technical Committee, George Beuselink, Bill Burris and Allan Caldwell gave presentations. Tony Callas, of Callas Rennsport in southern California, and Steve Calder, of Michelin also gave presentations. Dieter Landenberger also gave one, Andrew Lennon from PCNA, Product Manager for 911 and 718, and Erin Zubek, PCNA, Porsche Experience Center Operations Manager were among those that also gave presentations.

Later in the afternoon, there was a “Can AM Fire & Ice Dessert” held in hospitality. This is another thing I did not recall signing up for during registra-tion. What a surprise it turned out to be! They had Baked Alaska, Cherries Jubilee, Crème Brulee, and S’mores! I tasted all but the Crème Brulee. What a pleasant surprise!

Friday evening was the Autocross Awards Banquet.

Saturday morning, the 5K Run/Walk was held on the back 9 of the Jay Peak Golf Course. Parts of the course were really steep, but it was a beautiful morning, and well worth getting up early for. Later in the morning, a Parade of Porsches was held, and the Volunteer Lunch was also held. The tables were set out with little cricket clickers and cow bells, so expect to hear these at subsequent Parades for years to come.

Finally, the Victory Banquet was held Saturday eve-ning, and all too soon, the 61st Porsche Parade was history. So much more happened than space allows to cover here.

See you next year in Spokane, WA. July 9-15, and Lake of the Ozarks, Mo, July 8-15, 2018. Sunday, on my way back to spend another night in Quincy, MA., I stopped for lunch at the Red Arrow Diner in Manchester, NH. My third DDD of the trip. I flew home Monday. What a remarkable trip!
