Warning for ‘laser’ culprits>> Police zero in on laser incidents near King Shaka
STEPHEN COAN
THE locations from which lasers are being pointed ataircraft coming into land at King Shaka InternationalAirport have been identified by the police.
According toSAPSspokespersonColonel JayNaicker, thepolice are aware of particular areas around King Shakawhere people shine these lasers from, naming DurbanNorth, Umhlanga, Phoenix, Ballito, Tongaat and Verulam.
Naicker said laser incidents have been reported by pilotsto air traffic navigation systems since the new airport cameinto operation.
“Since 2013 the incidents have increased,” he said, add-ingallpolicestationswereinformedwhensuchincidentsoc-curred but as yet there had been no arrests.
According to chairperson of the Phoenix, Verulam andTongaat Community Police Forum, Omesh Singh, the issuehas been discussed at meetings of the station commandersin the area. “They are trying to create an awareness of theissue,” said Singh. “It is a very serious matter and we wantto sensitise the community about it and nab the culprits.”
DurbanNorth CPF chairpersonHaden Searle said his fo-rum had been aware of the phenomenon for a “long periodof time”.
Searle said one particular incident stood out although itinvolved a spotlight and not a laser. “A police helicopterwasonaflightpathoverourareawhenaspotlightwasshoneintohis cockpit and it really startled the pilot. Hewas able to pin-pointtheareawhereitcamefromandwewentandconfiscat-ed this massive spotlight.”

THEASEN PILLAY
I WOULD like to commend themanagement of Shoprite for theirforesight and sound decision inemploying thestaffwhoprevious-ly worked at Gaterite Supermar-ket in Verulam.
Shoprite recently took over thestore Gaterite and also retainedmany personnel in various fieldsand Shoprite must be lauded forthis.
If these workers were not em-ployed there, perhaps they, alongwiththeirfamilieswhichis proba-blyhundredsofpeoplealtogether,would have suffered severe hard-ship.
There are very slim chances ofpeople obtaining employment inother companiesduring thesedif-ficult times.
Best wishes to Shoprite withyour new store. Gaterite was ex-tremely popular with shoppersnot only from Verulam, butaround Durban.
IhopeShopritewillbechampi-oningconsumers’rights,primari-ly in terms of offering competitiveprices, wide range of products, quality service and extendedhours of business. Also it is hopedthat staff would be treated fairly.

Care for customers
Best wishes to Shoprite with your new store.Gaterite was extremely popular with shoppersnot only from Verulam, but around Durban.
WHILE at Verulam Court last week, Iwas shocked to see themany “Sales inExecution of Immovable property”signs attached to the notice board. Itwas simply sad and heart breaking.
Financially, thesearedifficult timesand so many families struggle to stayabovewater. On theotherhand, finan-cial institutionsandbanksarewastingno time in issuing claims for the en-forcement of debts and for reposses-sion of properties.
Litigation is at an all-time high andthe courts are overwhelmed with thevolumeofmattersthatareissueddaily.
In the vastmajority of cases, judge-ments are obtained by default (unop-posed or no appearance). The credi-tors then swiftly commence executionproceedings, which result in the at-tachments and sale of properties.
On the eve of a sale in execution, orsometimes after the sale has gonethrough, people want to approach thecourt for assistance. More often thannot, by then, it’s simply too late, as thecourts(especiallytheHighCourt)takesadimviewonlastminuteapplications, stating that thepersonhadknowledgeof the matter for some time.
On that basis alone, an “urgent ap-plication” can be dismissed.
Ihaveoftenenquiredfromclientsastowhytheywaiteduntil thelastminuteto see a lawyer and the replies I get arethat they had “made an arrangementto pay”, or that the summons was fora default years agowhich they settled,or that they simply did not realise the“seriousness”.
One must remember that if a sum-mons is issued against a person, itmeans that their assets and livelihoodare vulnerable.
Putbluntly, theyareunderattack. Itis simply unwise and irresponsible tosit backandhope thatnothingbadwillcome of the case.
People are strongly advised to im-mediately get legal assistance, whenthey receivea summons. Our lawsandcourtproceedingshaveevolveddrasti-cally andacompetent attorneymaybeable to successfully defend a claim,
which, although is factually correct, isdefective for some other legal / proce-dural reason.
At the end of the day, the courts arethere to provide justice and fairness inaccordance with the law. One cannotexpect relief if one approaches thecourts at the last minute.
Take control of your legal affairs, because if you don’t choose to protectyour rights and interests, no one elsewill.

TO our voters – you madethe difference as we marchforward.
The 2014 electionsbrought new hope andvision to South Africanswho have now realised thattheir vote can, and will, make a difference to theirfuture.
We realise that theseelections indicate votingpatterns andparty support, but more importantly, therolecouncillorsplay in theirrespective communities.

The ANC’s once land-slide victory is declining inparliamentary elections.Theyfell from70%(2004)to66% (2009 ) to their lowestthus far, 63% (2014) .
OntheotherhandtheDAshare increased from 16%(2009) to 22% (2014) .
Thanks to all the voters -your vote has now made adifference to change thecountry’s constitution.
History was made in thevoting patterns in Tongaat.
For the first timetheDAhada landslide victory over theANC.
This was achieved eventhough the ANC hadbrought in two additionalvoting wards - Zamakuh-hule and Canelands - withover 4 000 additional vot-ers.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
TOYOTA Corollas have become legendary on the South Africanmarket.Theyhavebeenwithusformanyyearsandwitheverydesign
change they continue where the previous one’s left off.New models improve on previous faults and shortcomings and
then new features are added. This latest model, the 1.6 Prestige, got more of a facelift than a redesign.
The Corolla’s “new face” is prominent. The large headlights arean extension of the grille, creating a friendly face. The airintakesgive the Corolla's face a big smile with two deep dimples on thecheeks. I have to admit, a friendly faced car immediately makes mefeel at ease and is as if I want to take the vehicle for a ride, pardonthe pun.
This particular Corolla confirmed it will continue to contributeto the legend. What I found in the past couple of models is thatthe legend has also shown signs of ageing, similar to cartoon characters who started off as children and aged over the years.
THE RIDE
I was pleasantly surprised how quietly the Corolla 1.6 Prestige idles. With the sixspeed manual transmission and the 1.6 engine I was
up to legal cruising speed well before shifting into top gear — verysmooth, and the powertoweight ratio is good. With two passengers, the Corolla handled the varying road conditions well.
What I picked up was that the Corolla is quiet inside and littleroad and wind noise were transferred into it. With the cruise controlset, the trip was so comfortable and relaxed it seemed as thoughthe kilometres rolled past unnoticed.
The lights of the Corolla are good and the beams light up well. What I found interesting was that when I flicked over to high
beam more light was added and it seemed as though the low beamstayed on. Thus you get added lighting instead of replacement.

New workshop for Drive Tech Auto
VERDICT
The Corolla is not a young person's vehicle. It is bettersuited to mature and aged drivers. I would put thetarget age in the 40 to 60 bracket.
The Corolla is a legend and this model continueswith this benchmark.
As stated earlier, the latest technology is put togood practice in this model, so the features are there. In the event of being conservative the Corolla willfit your requirements.
Your local branch will assist you in this decision— just give it a call.
