UPCOMING WORKSHOP
IN EARLY JUNE!!
STONE CARVING WORKSHOP
Ever wonder how
Michelangelo created his
fantastic sculptures? He was
a genius and had a lot of
workers assist him. Well,
you do not need to be a
genius to create your own
beautiful stone carving, just
have a desire to learn the
amazing process. Working
in a group environment will
enable you to share the
experience of immediate change and find solutions to
unplanned occurrences. You will be guided individually
through the process of carving. The amazement and
satisfaction of creating something out of a raw stone
into a beautiful sculpture will be yours to cherish
forever.
Class dates, times, and costs will be listed in next
month’s brochure.
Class will be taught by Dace Lielausis, our featured artist.
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
DACE LIELAUSIS
Time is not a thing that is looked at for how long a piece of sculpture takes to be created. It’s the momentum, at the moment, the vision of something emerging from the stone as I carve. It’s the accidental loss of part of a piece that forces me to go with the flow of the demand of the stone, which I then manipulate. It’s a dusty, dirty process, one that I get lost in. It is only dangerous when I don’t protect my eyes from flying shards of stone. There is no failure, but a constant change from each stroke to another of the hammer and chisel. If something unintentionally cracks, I am pushed into accepting that change, and the form evolves. Creating is my need that has to be fulfilled to express what is internal. It becomes external by the use of my hands, eyes, spirit and desire to create something that is not with words. Stone has been my medium, and it is inherently beautiful without my help. But, with my help, forms emerge, colors become revealed, and an end product is produced. I love to strip away from the natural form to find what is hidden. I graduated from Cal State, Los Angeles, with a Master’s Degree in Art, in 1975. I’ve shown in the Los Angeles Art Association Gallery, Glendale Library, Glendale Art Museum, and have sold work privately. I’ve taught at Glendale Community College, Sierra Madre Art Association, Burbank Art Center, The Learning Tree University. I’ve been retired for three years, and it was the happiest day of my life to wake up without an alarm to realize I now had the freedom of time to focus on what I love, sculpting. My home is my sanctuary, sitting, shaded, under an orange tree, with my stone and tools.
