O5PBA Hall of Fame Inductees: On November 2, 2019, the Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association recognized three members from Central Ontario. The 41st Awards Dinner was held at the Sheraton in Hamilton. From left to right: Rheal Champagne, Brenda Hamilton and Jim Head. Jim Head, Players Division In the last 30 years, Jim Head has been a dominant force in five pin bowling. Jim is a product of the YBC at Village Bowl. He joined the Master Bowlers’ Association for the 1991-1992 season and has continued as a member to this day. During this time, Jim has an outstanding record of 13 wins, with 11 in the tournament division and 2 in the senior division. Jim has qualified for 10 national championships in the Master Bowler’s Association of Canada. His overall average in the MBAO is 260.21, one of the highest on record. In the Open, Jim has been equally impressive. Overall, he has qualified 24 times, beginning in 1991, which includes 10 times in singles, 18 men’s team and 6 mixed teams. He has been a provincial champion eight times and those victories produced five national medals, two gold, two silver, and a bronze. In 2017, Jim was selected as the national All Star with an average of 272.56, and 14 single game victories. O5PBA Hall of Fame Inductees: On November 2, 2019, the Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association recognized three members from Central Ontario.

Jim Head, Players Division

O5PBA Hall of Inductees (Cont’d) While excelling on the lanes, Brenda began her volunteer involvement, Brenda became the secretary of the Lake Ontario zone and after 3 years, became the president for 2 additional years. Ultimately, the Lake Ontario zone merged with the Central Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers Association and Brenda was secretary for 17 years as well as co-ordinating the average book, the lottery program and collecting record scores. Between 1990 and 2008, Brenda was recognized as the Secretary of the year seven times.

Brenda joined the provincial board in 2008 and continues to this day as Marketing, Publicity & Communications and Audit chair. In several other roles, Brenda has been a Judge of Play at the Open, co-chaired the hosting of the 2014 Youth Challenge nationals, wrote the 25 year history of O5PBA and spent countless hours to produce team rosters for the 50th Anniversary of the Open in 2014. Brenda has also coached four national Inter-Provincial teams.

Brenda has been inducted into the COBA Hall of Fame, received a 30 year service award, was recognized with a volunteer citation from the City of Mississauga and also the provincial Syl Apps award for her contribution to amateur sport.(Note: For the full bio please go www.o5pba.ca)

Rheal Champagne, Builder’s Division

While enjoying his league and tournament plan, Rheal saw several opportunities to volunteer. He has served two terms with the O5PBA Board of Directors. The first covered 1978 to 1987 and the second from 2003 to this day.

During his first term, Rheal began as a Director, covered record scores and banquets, lane certification and helped develop the All Ontario High School Provincial Championship Tournament.

Upon his return in 2003, Rheal became the Vice President and took charge of the lane certification and the rapidly evolving coaching program.

On the coaching side, he coached at the Open, the Pepsi and Youth Challenge, the Ontario Winter Games, the Inter-Provincials and was selected as the men’s team coach at the 1983 Canada Winter Games. In 2006, Rheal was selected as the Grass Roots Coach of the Year in both Ontario and Canada.

In summary, while Rheal has spent over 26 years on the provincial board, he has been on the COBA board for 34 years, covering every portfolio at the local level. In recognition, he was inducted to the COBA Hall of Fame in 2002. (Note: For the full bio please go www.o5pba.ca)

COBA Hybrid Tournament

On November 23, 2019, COBA will be hosting a doubles tournament. Each team will consist of 2 bowlers (1 Scratch and 1 Pins over average).

Competitors will bowl 4 games with the cash payout to the top 14 teams (based on 48 entries)

FORMAT: The total pin fall for the scratch bowler will be added to the overall +/- of the Pins over average bowler. For example, if the scratch bowler’s score is 1000 and the POA bowler is +25 for the 4 games, the team score is 1025. Another example, if the scratch bowler’s score is 980 and the POA bower is -30 for the for games, the team score is 950.

COST: $80 per team

LOCATION: Streetsville Bowl

TIME: 2 shifts, 2 PM & 7 PM

POA Average: The bowler’s average will be taken from the average book. If a bowler is not in the average book, an average sheet must be submitted as of November 7, 2019.

Coaching Reminder: All youth coaches are required to complete two courses by December 31, 2019 to be eligible to coach at the Provincial or National Level of the Youth Challenge. If you have any questions, email Melissa Llewellyn, Coaching Coordinator.
