National Conference on Nanophotonic Materials
In the previous year we were the winner of the SPIE-Collaborative Conference
Grant. We conducted a national conference “National Conference on Nanophotonic
Materials-NCNM 08” during October 10-12, 2008. The conference was conducted in
collaboration with SPIE-IIT Madras Student Chapter. The theme of the conference was to
introduce new developments in the field of nanophotonic materials and thin film devices.
Students and faculties from IIT Madras SPIE Student chapter were actively participated
in the conference.
The inaugural ceremony of “National conference on Nanophotonic
materials”
There are about 50 contributed papers. The presentations are made under two
categories: oral and poster. Due to limitations of the time available, more number of
papers are placed under poster presentation category. The SPIE CUSAT student chapter
sponsored best poster awards and best presentation awards to aspiring researchers. The
conference was mainly focused on post graduate students and research scholars. Almost
150 students from different parts of the country were participated in the event and experts
from across the country were invited to deliver lectures on topics related to nano
technology, photonic band gap materials, nonlinear optics and thinfilm devices. As a part
of the conference two sessions were conducted exclusively for professional development
training. This includes How to make good presentation and Statistical methods for error
analysis. Cultural programmes conducted on the eve of the conference added colors to
the conference. Some of the invited speakers are listed below

Academic Training
The SPIE-CUSAT Student Chapter in association with, Department of Physics,
Cochin University of Science and Technology conducts an Academic Training for Post
graduate Students of various institutions in Kerala. As a part of these, five students have
completed their academic projects in the areas of Optoelectronic Devices, Non-linear
Optics and Nano photonics. Also SPIE conduct professional development programmes
for the post graduate students in the Department of Physics, CUSAT. Thirty students are
participating in this 3 month programme.
Ten day workshop for School Children-“Physics: Scope and awareness”
SPIE CUSAT Student chapter also organized a ten day workshop for school
children in collaboration with Department of physics, CUSAT. The workshop
commenced on 20th April 2009. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. N.
Chandramohanakumar, Registrar, Cochin University of Science and Technology. Prof.
Godfrey Louis, HOD, Dept. of Physics, CUSAT presided the function, Prof V C
Kuriakose, welcomed the gathering and Dr. M K Jayaraj proposed the vote of thanks.
The workshop intended to providing the budding youths, hands on experience on
various experiments in and out of their curriculum. The students participated in the
workshop are also be exposed to the technical knowledge behind the making of telescope
for distant observations. They got a chance to familiar with the research atmosphere at
the Department of Physics and are also introduced to the frontier areas in physics. Classes
are being conducted by eminent teachers to improve their basic understanding of the
subject.
One complete day was spent in c-SiS (Center for Science in Society), an auxiliary
institution established in the University campus to create scientific awareness among the
public, where students got acquaintance with different scientific principles through
SCIENCE-in-ACTION working models and “See and Believe” experiments. The students
were also given a chance to use the library facilities during these days.
The workshop was being successfully organized by SPIE CUSAT Student chapter
for the fourth year. UNESCO and International Union of Astronomy had decided to
observe and celebrate the year 2009 as International Year of Astronomy. The year 2009
make the four hundredth anniversary of the first astronomical observation through a
telescope by Galileo Galilei. SPIE CUSAT Student Chapter is also celebrating this by
organizing various programmes through out the year 2009. The Physics: Scope and
Awareness was the first in this series.
Prof. M Sabir, Department of Physics CUSAT, inaugurated the valedictory
function and distributed the certificates for the students who participated in the workshop,
Prof. Godfrey Louis, HOD, Dept of Physics, CUSAT presided the function, Dr. M K
