Get ready for an action packed month of activities commencing with the Cruising Group’s Pirate Raid on the

Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club. The armada departed on Saturday 17th February at 0900 hrs and raided at

1700 hrs at PFSYC. Check out the result in the Cruising Section report later in the newsletter. A great effort

by Steve “Blue Beard” Imgrund, the crews and organisers at PFSYC. This event will be followed by the

Cruising Group trip away to Mandurah over the Labour Day long weekend.

Further action will be flowing with CPBA hosting two major events in March. The first will be the Calamari

Classic to be held on Saturday 10th March. This event is open for registration by CPBA members as well as

the general public. Check in is from 0630 hrs followed by a briefing at 0800 hrs, commencing of fishing at

0830 hrs and weigh in from 1600 hrs. Following the weigh in the club rooms we will be hosting the

Presentations of prizes from 1800 hrs and the club will be open for entertainment, food and beverage for com-

petitors and CPBA members.

An information evening will be held prior to the Classic on Thursday 1st March commencing at 1800 hrs in

the Club Rooms. Food and beverage will be available for purchase as well as information on squid and prizes

to be won. Members are invited but please book with the Calamari Classic web site as numbers will be

limited.

If due to unfavourable weather on the day the fishing event may be postponed and run on the 11th or 17th

March.

On Saturday the 24th March CPBA will host the AAAWA Boat Fishing Championships. This event is open to

CPBA members and the general public. The competition starts at 0500 hrs when skippers will start to sign in

for the day. Fishing starts at 0630 hrs when boats will start from the harbour. Best be out of the way as there

will be a rush for the open water as competitors want to spend as much time as possible with lines in the

water.

They will start to return in the afternoon as the close off for bags is 1530 hrs with the weigh in from 1630 hrs.

You are welcome to come down and see what competitors have been able to catch from our own back yard.

Presentations will be held in our club rooms from 1830 hrs. Food and beverage again will be available for pur-

chase.

Again if due to unfavourable weather the event will be carried over to the Sunday 25th.

Please be aware that these events are open to the public and whilst non members will need to launch and park

outside our club there will be increased foot traffic in and around the club house. If you are not participating

directly in the event please arrange your own boating activities to avoid any inconvenience to yourselves as

the event has right of way during these times. You are however very welcome to participate directly or to uti-

lize the Club’s hospitality offering during these events.

The Committee and Management certainly hope that members avail themselves of this opportunity.

Please be patient, friendly and helpful to our guests if you are around the Club at these times.

Enjoy.

General Manager’s Notes

The Club is hosting two major events next month, the Calamari Classic on 10 March and the AAAWA State

Boat Fishing Championship on 24 March. Members can register for both events and we encourage members’

families and friends to join the fun and festivities surrounding the presentations following each event.

Club Sponsors

Our sponsors’ financial support enables the Club to maintain and improve member facilities whilst retaining

member subscriptions and fees at an affordable level. Sponsors need the support of members to vindicate their

sponsorship so please take the time to check with our sponsors for any work you require from any finance

requirement through to maintenance on your boat, trailer or vehicle.

Fuel Facility – On Site

Discussions are moving forward with a fuel distributor re providing an on-site fuel facility for members’ boat

fuel requirements. We expect a formal proposal in March. Further details will be provided as this item

progresses.

New Pens – Stage 1

We are making progress with pen piles and covers delivered on site last week. The pens require power, water

and communication services which will necessitate a trench being dug from the fish cleaning station to the pens

to accommodate these services. The trench will commence within the next week and will be done in stages to

ensure members can continue to use facilities. The work will create some inconvenience for members and we

appreciate your patience and understanding. The new pens are expected to be completed in April 2018. 12

metre pens in Stage 1 will accommodate members who have agreed to partly fund the project by prepaying

three or five years pen fees. Stage 1 includes a new tie-up jetty located east of our main ramp jetties with the

western side reserved for CVSSR vessels and emergency vessels. We still have a limited number of pens

available for allocation. Please contact me if you have any queries or require further information on our pens.

Temporary Pens Booking System

A new system for temporary pens will be introduced in conjunction with the pen changes as opposed to the

current practice of “first in – best dressed” which is not practical for members requiring a temporary pen whilst

their boat trailer is being repaired which is an important service for members. Details of the new booking

system will be circulated in March.

Wash-Down Bays Upgrade

Replacement of the water supply and taps has been completed thanks to the assistance of Rob Pomersbach.

Water is a valuable commodity and the Club and members are expected to manage our water wisely. Our water

volume has increased substantially, and members are reminded that there is a 10-minute maximum wash-down

time per boat which is being monitored. Please check that taps are turned off after use.

Refurbishment of Ground Floor Restrooms

Our next stage which will commence after the AAAWA State Boat Championship, is the new storeroom and

vending machines area followed by a new office entry and relocation of the entry door for the first-floor foyer.

We will apply for planning approval to install a themed jetty landing as the main entry statement to the club.

The balance of the work has been broken into a series of projects to minimise inconvenience for members. Western Security Fence – Extension

Following our landlord’s approval, a contactor has been engaged to extend the fence into the water to improve

our security.

Chair/Table Storage Area

A new storage area has been built in the Commodores Room on the first floor which will reduce the time and

cost when changing furniture settings as the previous storeroom was located on the ground floor.

Bollards Removed

The bollards at the southern end of our parking area have been removed as part of our works program thanks to

the valuable assistance of Steven Dyjak and his machinery. The additional space created will allow longer

trailer/vehicle combinations to park in this area.

For the February busy bee the crew demolished the flower bed and brickwork in the under croft area.

Sand was barrowed and spread around the grass area as well as flower beds, bricks and rubble loaded onto

a trailer.

We had the following crew helping—Sean Morris, Tom Bushby, Allen Guest, George Tofts, Ernie Bell, and

George Webb.

Ernie gave the bbq filters a good wash and the rest of the crew took care of the flower bed removal.

A big thanks to Thor who helped out as well as Luka Pavlovich (Lou) for passing on a tip pass to dispose of

the bricks and rubble.

Also a big thanks to John Tissott for providing the morning tea.

Next busy bee is March 17th, from 8.30am to 12 noon.

If any members would like to join us at the next Busy Bee, please contact John or Cindy at the CPBA Office

or just roll up.

Part of the Crayfish information night at CPBA on 20th October was the much anticipated drawing of the raffle for a

day’s fishing on board Robby Pomersbach’s “Sunride”, whilst staying at his holiday home in Leeman. To supple-

ment the trip was an added bonus of having Ryan Thipthorp of TV fame and owner of Oceanside Tackle along to

provide the raffle winner – Neville Burton, with tips and tricks for demersal fishing.

We all arrived Friday evening and were greeted by our host with the most Robby, preparing a gastronomic delight in

the kitchen for dinner. The obligatory few drinks and tackle talk whilst checking the weather for the morning had us

motivated for an early night in readiness for what looked like to be a wonderful day on the water.

Neville hadn’t been out deep, demersal fishing before and had only ever used bait for all of his fishing. Ryan popped

his teachers hat on and provided an in depth discussion covering all aspects of tackle and technique’s for using

artificials on the way out to the grounds. Rob pulled back on throttle after an hour of steaming and declared that his

Furuno sounder was showing quality ground with good fish shows on it. Neville was still not converted by the time

we got out there and stuck within his confidence zone of a paternoster rig baited with fresh local octopus and the tra-

ditional snapper lead.

Neville being our priority for the day got the first few drops on his own and he got straight into some lovely red

throat emperor and then followed up with a good sized Baldchin groper. Ryan got his chance for a drop and demon-

strate to Neville how fishing with soft plastics was done. With a 2 ounce jig head, coupled with an Abrolhos 6.5 inch

paddle tail in the white colour, Ryan sent it on its way to see what magic he could arouse from the depths. Honestly

you couldn’t have scripted it any better. Ryan is chatting away saying he can feel it hit the bottom and telling us all

how you work the softie when boom!! The rod doubles over. Rob and Neville start laughing and saying that Ryan’s

“little pencil rod” is going to break under that pressure. Ryan is fighting without a doubt a top fish but still takes the

time to run through the gear and his fighting technique to the benefit of us all on board. Eventually the line starts to

angle out from the boat, confirming Ryan’s earlier call of a Dhufish and you bet folks, up comes a 12kg Dhufish on

his first drop with a plastic. Happy Days I say and high fives echo around the boat.

The next hour saw us all get amongst a wonderful demersal fishing bite time including some class Dhufish up to

15kg released. Rob once again put on a great trip for everyone and we were back at his place cleaning up fish and

the boat by lunch time.

Neville couldn’t stop thanking everyone for making this a fishing trip of a lifetime for him. On that note I would like

to tip my hat to Rob and Ryan for supporting CPBA and ensuring that Neville had a great trip.

Well done fellas and well done to CPBA for putting on a fun and informative night about crayfishing for members

and the public.

The Sport Fishing Group held its annual Crustacean Bake at the Club on February 11.

With plenty of seafood dishes including crayfish, freshly cooked and bbq’d chilli and

garlic crabs, Augusta Herring supplied by Mark Seares, chilli mussels and some great

salads and a range of sweet nothings to finish it was a huge success. There were

approximately 35 to 40 people attending.

A very successful afternoon.

Tim Schwass has been active recently, a crabbing

expedition to Dawesville collecting 20 crabs and then a

dip in the Swan to collect this beauty

Following which Tim turned his hand to somewhere 25

miles South west of Rottnest, a very nice Augusta

Herring!

The next event for the Sport Fishing Group is the

Calamari Classic Saturday March 10 at the Club.

Hope to see you all there.

Next meeting is on Monday 19th March, 7.30pm at the Club. All welcome

CPBA Cruising Group-February 2018, a Pirates Tale

Arrrrrr prepare to be boarded and show us ye booty ye scurvy bilge rats, them be words of terror heard from the

mouths of the CPBA Pirates. A fierce lot of pirate captains and their mangy crew, descending on the strong hold o’

Perth Flying Squadron.

A pirate raid like no other, the object that ye desire was the pirate chest from many a year’s plunder.

Here be the fierce lot ye best be aware of, look closely as ye might know a few. Like ye own “Commodore Kelly”

and the fierce pirate crews like, “Captain Blue Beard”; Bad Arrrhs Bailey; Cyclone Stacy; Captain Rip it out

Rosco, Kill Shot Kerry Ross, Captain Dark Knight, Captain Wild Bill, Jumpin Jolly Jo, Captain “Yarwurst

Anemone” Ash, Cutlass Kat, Icepick Nev, Vengeful Vixen Vicky, Captain Wayne Worts, Captain Ravishing Roy,

Dashing Di, Bloodthirsty Brent, “Hell-Arrrson” Alison, Captain Alakazam, Quick Wick Wes (Bomb expert),

,Captain Geezamo, Jugular Jackie, Brawlin Jordan Jetski, Brazen Bree, Cutthroat

Chelsea, Wild Wayward Wil 'n Sassy Slingshot Sienna, Tom Sparrow, Brawlin

Brettski 'n Carve it up Kelly.

All willing to lay down their lives to gain the treasure, none were lost. As we were

triumphant.

Here be some of the fearsome pirate crew in action.

This great event was open to all CPBA members, with only the Cruising Group taking up the challenge. We would

like all members to be involved in the defense of the chest, when the Club put on a Pirate Chest defence party.

The booty now be ours, it will be on display at th’ stronghold o' Cockburn Power Boats Association. Take heed it

soon be under attack and need’n all ye pirate horde to defend it till the last man.

The next venture that the Cruising Group embrace, will be the Mandurah long

weekend trip on the 3rd till the 5th of March. Only one week away, so email me if

you would like to join in.

So if you like what you have seen in the newsletter, then contact Cindy at the club to

HISTORY IN AN ONION SHED A little bit of history from Life Member Ernie Bell.

That is where the first meeting of CPBA was held by Jack Baker, founder of this now thriving Club. Six only pre-

sent, being George Moferdin, P. Smedley, R. Santich and two market gardeners from Spearwood and Coogee.

Jack owned the butchers shop in Hamilton Hill, and his wife Poppy ran a cattery at the rear of the shop. They had

two children, Graeme and Julie who are friends and still are. Jack and family have had many pleasant times togeth-

er.

It was in this shop I was asked if I would like to be a member of the Club. Over following years we became firm

friends as we were together at Russell Road where first ramp #1 and the Clubhouse were erected with help from all

volunteers past and some still able to reflect on past times.

The Club moved to it’s present location in 1981 where equipment and nets had been maintained for the

submarine boom during the war years.

Past and present office staff and office bearers and committee have fought and seen our club grow from those six

foundation men.

Photos of Jack Baker and past Commodores are there to be viewed and reflected for their time and effort. Also all

volunteers past and present who have helped to make our Club. Not forgetting the ladies who have also, and still

are, giving their support.

For those who would like to know, Jack Bakers’ ashes are near the spit post just outside the groyne.

A flotilla of 23 boats escorted him to his loved resting place in Cockburn Sound.

I was one of those escorting boats.

50 YEAR LONG SERVING MEMBER I wish to thank the Commodore, Office Bearers past and present, and staff, I have

had the pleasure of knowing over my years as a member of CPBA since late

fifties.

To be presented with a badge of honour for my time with the Club, I shall wear with

pride.

SIZE DOES MATTER

No I’m not talking about what is down under, now I’ve got your attention.

If you have been down to the club in the past 2 months, you would have seen these parking signs, “XL” .

There are 5 bays reserved for larger rigs that is vehicle and trailer sized between 17 – 20 m.

I was helping a member wash down his boat recently, and overheard a conversation that the club was more focused

on large boat owners, rather than small boat owners, I want to dispel that myth. The Committee has looked at what

options were available to it with the new parking layout. Members may recall there were 11 bays up against the

Eastern Fence, that large rigs used, these have been reduced in number from 11 to 5. Hence allowances for more

small, medium and large size parking has been made available.

7m boats were considered large boats in the past, however, now we see many members with 7m boats as the norm.

It is important to act courteous to all members, and remember, that these sizable rigs have no available options to

park elsewhere on club grounds.

There are a number of larger bays elsewhere in the car-park that can take trailers with 7 and 8 m boat trailer

combinations

Any Member with any size rig may park in these allotted XL bays, if all other parking including the north side of

the club rooms’ lot is full.

So in summary, the Club is all about meeting the expectations of All Size boats…. Large and Small.

Please always follow the instructions of our Boson, Thor.
