A Message from the Headteacher
Year 11 students have just completed their mock exams and I am pleased with the mature and responsible way they approached these. While some papers are still being marked, early indications give evidence that the majority of students have revised well for these important exams. We are working to ensure that students are supported well over the next few months to achieve the best results they can in order to prepare them for the next stage of their academic career. Our Year 9 Parents’ Evening was hugely successful earlier this month, and I would like to thank parents and carers for their show of support to their children. A highlight of the evening was the participation of our Digital Champions; these students chatted to parents and other students to demonstrate how they can improve online safety. Preparations for our annual School Production are continuing and I would encourage you to purchase your tickets. The cast of Beauty and the Beast are rehearsing daily and, having peeked into the school hall during some of these sessions, it is clear that we are in for a treat!

It gives us great pleasure to introduce you to this year’s school show, Beauty and the Beast! An Enchantess (Frances Ulyatt Y13) disguised as a beggar-woman offered the Prince (Joe Cooke Y11) a rose in return for shelter – he refused and she has cursed him and his servants: he has been changed into a hideous Beast (Sam Weakley Y11) and his servants into household objects: a candelabra - Lumiere (Sam Moore Y11); a clock - Cogsworth (Joe Moore Y9); a teapot - Mrs Potts (Becky
Stevenson Y11); a teacup – Chip (Jenny Weakley Y9); a feather duster – Babette (Felicity Ashby Y13) and a wardrobe - Madame de le Grande Bouche (Sophie Madden Y11).The show will be performed in the School Hall on Thursday 1, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 February at 18:45. Refreshments will be
provided by the CSCA at each performance. Tickets are priced at £5 for children and concessions, and £8 for adults, available from the Finance Office and from Billy Bowman’s Music Shop. We do hope you can join us.
A warm welcome is extended to all potential students and their parents to join us at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 8 February, 6:00 - 9:00 pm. You will have the opportunity to meet our inspirational staff and discover the range of opportunities available to our Sixth Form students.
Staff, Governors and Sixth Form students will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on the night. For further information or to view our Sixth Form Prospectus and subject information please visit the school website or contact the Sixth Form team on tel; 01900 898888.
North Lakes Foodbank - Christmas Jumper Day
As a school community, we value the importance of contributing to the wider
community. It was for this reason that the Student Leadership Team decided that they
would like to make a donation to the Cockermouth Foodbank through the form of a
Christmas-themed non-uniform day. On 11 December students were given the
opportunity to wear non-uniform, preferably Christmas jumpers, in exchange for them
bringing in an item of food. We were completely overwhelmed and humbled by the
response. We are extremely grateful to our students and their families for their
donations and would like to thank them for their generosity. Our Student Leadership
Team provided some extra assistance to the volunteers at the warehouse with date
labelling and sorting the donations. The volunteers at the Foodbank do an amazing job
and work tirelessly to help those in our local community.

Cockermouth School are inviting new Parent Governors to join the Governing Body. To continue our
drive to make Cockermouth School an outstanding academy and to support, challenge and
influence the future direction and performance of the school, the Governing Body are inviting
expressions of interest from any current parent of a child at Cockermouth School who would like to
join the Governing Body. This will be a significant but worthwhile commitment and more details of
the Governing Body structure, meetings and committees, along with biographies of the current
Governors can be found on the Governor section of the school website. If you believe you are able
to make a contribution and are interested in joining the Governing Body of Cockermouth School,
please complete the short Expression of Interest form (also available on Firefly (http://
firefly.cockermouthschool.org/governors-1) and return it to Mrs Valerie Bone, Clerk to Governors, at
[email protected] by 15:30 on Friday 26 January 2018. Mrs Bone can also answer
any queries you may have about the role. If there are more expressions of interest than vacancies,
an election will take place with all parents eligible to vote.
We are delighted to be working alongside the
University of Oxford taking part in their
MYRIAD research project on Mental and
Emotional Health. Students from Years 7 and
8 have completed online questionnaires on
how, we as a school, promote people’s
wellbeing and resilience. The project is
based on the knowledge that adolescence is
a vulnerable time for the onset of mental
illness. By promoting good mental health and
intervening early, we can help prevent
mental illness from developing and mitigate
its effects when it does.
