IntroductionCocogreen is a world leading manufacturer and supplier of coir products. Coir products used by hor-ticultural growers are produced in Sri Lanka where the company operates its R&D centre besides its own coco-palm plantations and three processing factories.
Consignments to more than 26 countries are managed from the Manchester headquarter. Although the coir processor company is a major player in the market of horticultural growing media since 1996 it produces premium quality products under the name Cocogreen since 2009, a British-Sri Lankan joint venture. Within the frame of a strict quality control system the entire process of coir processing is supervised by highly qualified engineers and technicians.
From inspecting coco-palm plantations through drying in concrete driers and sieving, washing in fresh water and buffering to the pressing, packaging and transporting of mixtures containing different frac-tions the whole process is integrated and takes place within the company. It is due to this that in con-trast to the products of other manufacturers Cocogreen coir guarantees steady and constant quality for horticulturists.
Proving their commitment to producing premium coir Cocogreen possesses ISO 9001:2008 and SA 8000 certificates and LEAF membership. These are in line with the Cocogreen philosophy: to provide unbeatable quality through continuous development and research. Together with direct relations with customers and technological support this is synonymous with the satisfaction and success of horti-culturists.
We are proud that as exclusive distributors in Central Europe we can introduce Cocogreen coir, rep-resenting an entirely new dimension among growing media, to our fellow horticulturists. The personnel of Duna-R Ltd.
Coir GradesCoir is a natural organic substance extracted from the fibrous pericarp of coco-palm (Cocos Nucifera). The coarse, stiff, reddish brown fibre is a by-product produced when the inside of the coconut is used for culinary purposes. The attention of vegetable and ornamental plant gardeners turned to its extraor-dinarily advantageous features in recent decades. Three basic fractions are separated during pro-cessing: fine fibres that have extraordinary water holding capacity, the more coarse chips made from the husk enabling an aerated structure, and fibres. Mixed in appropriate proportion it acts as capillary and ensures even water supply of the media. By mixing these three raw materials in due proportions we can offer ideal media to almost all plant producers.
The finest particles, the so-called fine dust (< 1 mm) that could have adverse effect on the aerated structure of the growing media and may cause problems especially in the secondary cultures, is al-ways sorted out from the raw material in the factories of Cocogreen.
Before selecting the appropriate growing media it is important to gather information about the quantity of fine fibres, chips and fibrous materials in the given coir and whether it contains fine dust. Besides the physical properties of the products Cocogreen keeps chemical and biological properties under control. This knowledge ensures the production of reliable media that can be used successfully in the long run.

In soilless cultivation the nutrient supply of plants depends highly on the quantity and concentration of nutrients in the liquid nutrient. Plants have different requirements in different phases of growth depending on environmental factors, plant condition and variety.
Early in growing the dosage of liquid nutrient depends primarily on the stage of plant growth; at full load dosage should rather be adjusted to the lighting conditions. Acid consumption most be observed and an acid test of the irrigation water must be performed in order to accurately determine acid use. The EC values indicated are relative numbers and can be changed if necessary.
The composition of the nutrient supply may only be used as a guideline because the composition of the medium, the cultivation technology, the circumstances and the conditions of the plant can influ-ence it. The conditions of the plants are greatly influenced by the irrigation strategy, the climate, the growing equipment and the cultivation technology.
The correction recipe can only be used up to two weeks and it is practical to return to the standard recipe provided when the circumstances desire it. We recommend having a routine media test car-ried out once in every 2-6 weeks in soil laboratory and make a decision on further nutrient supply based on the result of the test as well.

Always adjust the EC and pH level of the liquid nutrient to the appropriate development stages. Apply the highest EC value generally at blossoming and at the beginning of berry growth. Besides measuring the liquid nutrient it is very important to measure and regulate the EC values in the plot.
Strawberry is sensitive to salts therefore keep the salt level of the plot in the 1.5-2.5 EC range de-pending on the part of the day and the cultivation period.
Plant 6-8 plants in the generally widespread 1 metre cultivation plot. Thus we can get 8-12 plants per square metre in forcing. On the bigger, 20 centimetres wide Optimum Strawberry plot 8-14 plants can be set out. There should be minimum 110 cm between the rows when using this technology.
The number of plants per unit area can be further increased in case of multilevel forcing on shelves. In this case pay attention because lower levels generally get less light therefore the planting density should be lower. Even 30-50 plants can be planted per square metre.
In soilless cultivation we can count on 50-80 decagram (18-28 ounces) produce per plant depend-ing on the level of the technology. 20-30 % of the total crop can be harvested in the fall and 70-80 % in the spring.
Fruit picked for immediate consumption should be quickly cooled down after it was picked. In the absence of cooling the crop can be stored only for a few hours or maximum for one day.
If the berries are stored between 0-4 °C in the storage area or during transportation we can calculate with 5-10 % loss in 2-3 days. At lower temperatures (between 0-1 °C) and 90-95% relative humidity strawberry can be stored up to 5-7 days.

Nursing in Cocogreen cubes
For nursing in coir cubes the cubes must be filled up with nutriments – similarly to rock-wool cubes – because they are received in a dry, pressed status, therefore a so-called swelling (expansion) must be performed. Take out the dry and pressed cubes from the boxes and put them into the nursing compartments so that they are evenly and loosely positioned.
It is practical to carry out swelling 3-4 days before pricking out so that the cubes swell properly and their water capacity is balanced. Filling up is performed with liquid nutrient in several steps using upper nozzles or sprinklers. The fill-up should have an EC value of 2.5-2.8 and a pH value between 5.5-5.8, while the water temperature should be 25 °C. Upon the effect of irrigation the coir absorbs the water and the volume starts to increase. Fill-up should be performed until the grid of the cube is completely strained and it is completely filled up with liquid nutrient, respectively. This should gen-erally be achieved with 5-6 irrigations. One nursing cube (10x10x6 cm) absorbs approx. 0.4-0.5 l water.
After swelling the pricking out of the plants can start. There are preformed pricking holes in the cube thus the sowing element should simply be inserted. After pricking out it is important to irrigate it for 1-2 days (until the roots cling to it) in the same way as before pricking out. The temperature of the nursing medium (21-22 °C) is very important from the aspect of quick rooting. Pay attention also to the temperature of the irrigation water which should not be too cold because it hinders the rooting and growth of the seedlings, respectively. When the plant has already clung to the medium the num-ber of irrigations can be reduced. Usually it is suitable to apply 1 irrigation per day in case of sunny weather; irrigate every 2-3 days in dull weather. The volume of the liquid nutrient delivered should be 150-200 ml/cube. Irrigation should always be carried out with liquid nutrient.
If the nursing period exceeds 5 weeks the seedlings should be spread out. Seedlings suitable for planting can have green buds but at the very most white buds.
The key to successful nursing:
• appropriate medium and optimal supply of nutriments
• appropriate moisture content held in the rooting zone and liquid nutrient concentration
• optimum temperature conforming to the growth phase of the air and the root medium
• provision of the minimum required light intensity

Requirements for cultivation on coirMost of the plant growing structures are going on monoculture cultivation, so the plant health reasons cause more and more problems during the production. Every gardener must decide whether to secede from the soil of the plant growing structure and start the isolated cultivation or not. The isolated crop cultivation requires some technical and technological elements which are the basis of the successful growing.
Benefits of the isolated cultivation: • The works connected with the soil have been canceled • No damage arising from the soil • Higher yields and quality can be achieved • Easier to provide appropriate temperature for the root environment • Adequate water and nutrient supply for the plants • The product is free of harmful substances
Difficulties of the isolated cultivation: • Requires significant additional investment • Requires major technological discipline from the grower • Demands special expertise, well-established consultancy and service network
The cultivation will be successful if we take in account the following requirements: • definite decision for the isolated cultivation • suitable quantity and quality irrigation • large airspace in the growing facility • long (at least 8 month) cultivation cycle • automated (EC, pH, etc.) water and nutrient feeder and air conditioning computer • manual instruments (EC, pH measure) for continuously controlling the substrate and nutrient • ensure the optimum heat level for the plants (15-25 oC) • unique irrigation system (pressure-compensating, on-line dripper) • misting system (4-4,5 bar) • supervision and control from professionals
Most common mistakes: • the condition and the size of the irrigation system is not suitable (low capacity) • the drip system gives out the nutrient unevenly (the difference should be maximum 5%!) • growers often don’t fill in the full capacity of the substrate whit the starter solution • cut the bags to ensure the drainage, and don’t let to stay the stagnant water in the bag • wrong determination of the proper fertigation volume (plant height, heating intensity, light, etc.) • fertigation under- or overdose • absence of continuous root medium measurement (substrate temperature, EC, pH), drain measurement (volume, EC, pH) • low or high medium temperature (the optimum is between 18-22 oC) no bag or drainage sampling (laboratory) • wrong calibration and controlling of the instruments
