    By Katharine Swan

    Despite the announcement in Decem-

ber that the United States had been in a

recession for the past year, the Naples,

Bonita Springs, and Estero real estate

    mat nisd ot 2008 wit a o-

ish. So far, the upward trend appears to

    b contining into 2009.

    Last year showed phenomenal in-

creases in sales, says Michael Burke,

a luxury real estate professional spe-

    cializing in Naples, Bonita Springs,

and Estero area housing. And judg-

ing by how busy weve been so far this

ya, 2009 pomiss to b mo of t

    same.

Although the nations real estate mar-

    t ovall ondd in 2008, L

and Collier counties in Florida showed

marked signs of recovery. The sales

statistics fo 2008 sow a faily stady

    incas, stating in Fbay 2008.

Closd sals in Dcmb 2008 in-

    creased 31 percent over December

2007, and pnding sals at t nd of

    2008 w a wopping 89 pcnt ov

2007. In addition, t nmb of closd

sals in t aa in 2008 is compaablto t nmb of closd sals in 2002,

just before the real estate boom.

Similar trends were seen in the sur-

    onding aas. In Fot Mys-Cap

Coral, sales rose impressively, 43 per-

cnt btwn Dcmb 2007 and D-

cmb 2008. Maco Island boastd a

i in closd sals of 27 pcnt ov

the previous year. Coinciding with the

sales increases are decreases of new

listings, which helps by reducing the

    invntoy. As of Janay 1, 2009, t

    was a 2.1-ya spply of oms c-

rently on the market in Bonita Springs,

Naples, and Estero, a marked improve-

ment from the areas 3.1-year supply

    the year before.

This positive trend seems to have con-

tind into t st copl monts of

2009, and sows no signs of slac -

ing off anytime soon. The number of

pended sales continues to be high, and

a deluge of interested buyers request-

ing showings and making offers bodes

well for sales in coming months.

Wv bn bsi tan v in 2009,Burke says. Were doing more show-

ings, receiving and making more of-

fers, and closing more sales. Even our

website is attracting more visitors than

    before.

Many real estate experts and econo-

mists are predicting that the national

real estate market is close to hitting

bottom. But judging by the sales num-

bers in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Es-

tero, it would appear that the local real

estate market has already hit bottom

and has been steadily recovering lost

ground ever since. Sales numbers are

    improving but prices remain afford-

able, attracting buyers with the incen-

    tive of a good deal.

It dos appa tat w a at t bot-

tom and in some communities, marketreports indicate the average price per

    square is increasing while inventory

    is decreasing, Burke says. While

there are a number of buyers still on

the fence, the people buying right now

are the ones obtaining some of the best

deals and value. As the saying goes

Dont step over a dollar to pick up a

penny. Theres no better time to buy

    than now.

This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association and

provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certied Financial

    Planner with Castle Financial.

The average college graduate is $20,000 in debt, and

todays young adults are clearly exposed to more op-portunities for self-directed nancial disaster than any

group in history. Despite the current credit crunch,

credit cards are still a common way most young peo-ple afford their new adult lifestyle, and rising costs on

everything from rent to gasoline presents deeper chal-

lenges. So it happens. Your kid gets in trouble withthose credit cards, loses a job, or cant nd a job to pay

the sum total of the rising debt he or she has. What can

    you do?

Make sure you can afford to help. Its tough to say noto a nancial bailout for your kid, but depending on

the level of trouble he or she is in and your own nan -cial responsibilities, you may need to. Here are some

    ideas:

Both sides should come clean: Remember that this sit-

uation is as much about the relationship as about mon-

ey. The decision to help a family member with moneyproblems requires understanding lecturing tends to

work not so well. But its right to encourage your off-spring to take a frank look at their nancial situation

and if they are in debt trouble of any kind, they shouldget help. Its also important that you show condence

that they will make it through this.

Consider a joint talk with a nancial planner: A -

nancial planner, such as a CERTIFIED FINANCIALPLANNER professional, can look at their nancial

situation and your own and give you both a road map

on how to work through your childs money problemsand set up better money management techniques for af-

    ter the crisis.

Should help be considered a gift? Actually, this isa good rst question in any scenario where you offer

help to a friend or family member. What happens if you

dont get the money back? For the sake of the relation-

ship involved, it might make sense to think through that

possibility. Would the potential loss of money injureyou, and worse, will it injure the relationship? This is

why it might be a very good idea to present this solu-

tion as a one-time gift and then stick to it.

But if its a loan: You need to structure it profession-

ally with clear consequences if it goes unpaid. Handledcorrectly, such a solution can offer benets for the bor-

rower and lender alike. But theres the potential for

incredible downside. Unclear agreements can lead tomissed payments or default. If the borrower dies sud-

denly, the lenders investment may be lost if the agree-

ment isnt structured correctly. A properly executedpromissory note is still an obligation of the estate, and

may continue to be paid to an heir or other person or

entity based on the terms as agreed

Work with them on budgeting: Its not going to be

enough to solve the immediate problem. Even if youdont use a nancial planner to help you both work

through the situation, its important to set a clear nan-

cial course for your child going forward. They obvious-ly have to have a stake in the planning, but youre going

to have to provide guidance. Encourage them to start an

emergency fund. Optimally, theyll need to stash awaythree to six months worth of living expenses, and even

if its just a small start, its part of the recovery effort.

(NC) - Calling all entrepreneurs: Dreaming about

a restful retirement in sunnier parts? Better sell the

business rst and dont wait till the last minute.

Business owners often underestimate the time and

effort required to prepare the business for sale or

succession, notes Michael Walker, national direc-

tor, Aon M&A Transaction Advisory Group.

Walker offers the following ve tips to help you pre-

    pare your business for sale:

    1. Transfer power: Enabling the management team

to carry on without you will be a big plus to a pur-

chaser. Build up your management team, and shift

sole responsibility away from you. Transfer key per-

sonal relationships with suppliers and customers and

    formalize contracts where possible.

    2. Hang on to key employees: To ensure the loyalty

of key employees, changes may be needed to incen-

tives and employment terms. Signing employees to

    employment contracts with condentiality and/or

non-competition clauses may reduce a purchasers

risk, and increase the price theyre willing to pay.

    3. Clean house: Stay one step ahead of the purchas-

er and deal with outstanding lings and remittances.

Even if it means spending a bit of money to clean the

slate, you should settle any legal disputes against thecompany well ahead of selling.

    4. Talk taxes early: Speak to a qualied tax advisor

about tax strategies and implications that will affect

you personally after a sale or succession to a family

member. Some strategies need to be planned years

in advance, so start asking questions sooner rather

    than later.

    5. Keep it a secret: Maintaining condentiality is

critical as you prepare to sell. Assemble an external

team of advisors to help manage the sale process and

reduce the risk of word getting out.

Further information on preparing your business for

sale or succession can be found online at www.aon.

(NUI) - Workaholism has become a social norm. Many

people proudly call themselves workaholics, but true

workaholism - an uncontrollable compulsion to work

    - can destroy personal relationships and lead to a lower

    quality of life.

How do you know if youre a workaholic? Workaholics

routinely work more than 40 hours a week and take their

work to dinner, homes and bed. They neglect personal re-

sponsibilities and relationships and can feel anxious when

    not working.

My drug is the juice from constant movement, constant

communication and continual achievement - the long list

of to-dos and completed tasks at the end of the day, saysDarren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of SUC-

CESS Magazine and admitted workaholic. Its a wonder-

    ful high.

Despite the thrills, there are many damaging affects. Ad-

diction starts to take over your power, drive your behavior

and create a compulsion for continual use, says Hardy

This behavior can take you off course from your ma-

jor goals; tax your physical, psychological and emotional

system; and even damage or destroy relationships.

Anyone displaying the characteristics of a workaholic

should consider taking steps to overcome this potentially

harmful addiction. On his blog, Hardy has created Work-

aholics Anonymous - A 12-Step Program of Recovery

and Personal Transformation for recovering workaholics

who are looking to transform their lives.

March 12 is World Kidney Day

(NC) - Four years ago the International Society of Neph-

rologists (kidney specialists), and the International Fed-

eration of Kidney Foundations decided to mobilize the

global community to increase awareness of the impor-

tance of kidney health. Why? you ask.

Well, for starters, do you know what your kidneys do? Do

you realize that they help maintain your bodys chemicalbalance or metabolism, that they produce essential hor-

mones, and clear your blood of waste products that act as

toxins? Do you know that while a person can live with just

one healthy kidney, if the two stop working, you could die

in a matter of hours? Exactly.

Moreover, many people do not realize that lifestyle

choices such as diet, regular exercise, stress reduction,

eliminating smoking or limiting alcohol consumption are

crucial to kidney health. And managing other conditions

that may lead to kidney disease will also go a long way

in keeping kidneys in tip-top shape. Dr. Copland, a neph-

rologist and chair of The Kidney Foundation of Canadas

Public Policy Council notes: High blood pressure is one

of the major risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Its

important to have it monitored and kept in check.

Since 2005, the second Thursday of March has becomeWorld Kidney Day, a global reminder to pay attention to

that organ we so often overlook. Also, during the month

of March, The Kidney Foundation goes door-to-door in

neighborhoods across the country to raise awareness and

funds for research and programs to help people living

    with kidney disease.

    Tips for Kidney Health

(NC) March is Kidney Health Month. Here are some

tips for kidney health that can be used to prevent or man-

age disease, or increase early detection.

Know your estimated glomerular ltration rate (e-GFR)

a measure of your kidney function.

Inammation of the eyes, hands and feet are among

the warning signs of kidney disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure which

    requires dialysis or transplantation.

Never underestimate the value of taking your

medications as prescribed, particularly if you have

    diabetes.

    Exercise regularly.

Yes to butting out. Smoking can triple the risk ofkidney disease.

High blood pressure monitoring is essential to prevent

    cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

    Eat a healthy diet.

Attend a health screening event in your area.

Lifestyle changes are key. Limit daily alcohol to two

    drinks or less.

Take note: Persons with a family history of chronic kid-

ney disease are at greater risk.

High risk groups also include specic ethnic groups. If

you are Aboriginal or Asian, South Asian, Pacic Island,

African/Caribbean or Hispanic, discuss kidney health

and the risk of disease with your health care practitio-

    ner.

Shopping for food that is delicious, nutritious and

affordable(NC)-Many people think that buying healthy food

is more expensive, but that does not need to be the

case. There are lots of ways to make less expen-

sive choices that are nutritious and you dont have

to give up taste to do it, says Carol Dombrow,

registered dietitian with the Heart and Stroke

Foundations Health Check program. Carol offers

the following tips for getting the most nutritional

    bang for your buck:

Check out weekly yers and plan your meals

    around the specials.

Cook from scratch when you can and keep

your pantry stocked with the basics for your

    favourite recipes.

Shop for and prepare dishes on the weekend to

get you through the busy week days.

Try not to shop when you are hungry. Plan your

meals and prepare your grocery list in advance and

stick to it when you are shopping.

Try to buy fresh vegetables and fruit in season.

In the off seasons, canned and frozen vegetables

and fruit are practical, less expensive and

    nutritious.

Buy in bulk when you can.

Enjoy meatless meals at least a few times

throughout the week. Baked beans, vegetarian

chili, eggs, tofu and peanut butter are usually

less costly and can make healthy and delicious

    meals.

    Caring for Your

Pet on a Budget(ARA) - Most people consider a pet a member of the

family -- and for good reason. Pets offer compan-

ionship, amusement and unconditional love. Studies

support that owning a pet offers a multitude of emo-tional and overall health rewards.

However, with the plunging economy and the rising

costs of food, fuel and housing, cash-strapped North

Americans are pinching their pennies. People are

faced with having to make difcult decisions on cut-

ting back; often giving up the things they love most.

Unfortunately, some pet parents are faced with the

dilemma of appropriately caring for their pet on a

tight budget. With a smart approach to affordable pet

care, you may nd you can afford to keep your pet

happy and healthy - and at home with you and your

    family.

    Resist the toy temptation:

Personalized accessories and elaborate toys have

become trendy, but pets wont miss the extra bellsand whistles. Pets are just as happy clad in a plain

collar and playing with less expensive or even safer,

homemade toys geared to improve overall pet health,

including chew toys for puppies and scratch-

    ing posts for cats.

    A healthy pet is a

    happy pet:

    Its important to still pro-

    vide your pet with routine

    veterinary care. But ask

    your vet to prescribe only

    the most vital vaccina-

    tions. You can also visit

    low-cost clinics for

    routine check-ups.Contact you local

    humane society to

    nd low-cost vet

    clinics or events.

    Food for

    Thought:

    To ensure your

    pets health in

    the long run

    it is important

    to consistently

feed them a healthy, well-balanced diet. Find an af-

fordable, quality product that your pet enjoys, and

avoid the premium products - which do not necessar-

    ily deliver more nutrients.

Some pet companies have stepped up to combat the

(ARA) - Think you have a crowded house? Maybe youre

not alone. Surprising new data from the U. S. Census Bu-

reau nds that many families are making room in their

home for parents, followed by siblings and other rela-

    tives.

From 2000 to 2007, the number of parents who move in

with their adult children grew 67 percent to 3.6 million.

Even more interesting, the number of parents younger

than age 65 in these households increased by 75 percent

and those 65 and older rose 62 percent.

With uncertain economic times and high-

    er housing costs, combining households

has become a more prudent approach to

    managing expenses. If youre planning

on making room for parents, siblings or

others, a room remodel might be rst on

your agenda. It is estimated that more

than a million homes undergo a remodel

    or renovation each year.

Today, many people are looking for cost-

effective yet environmentally soundremodeling techniques. In their book,

    Green Remodeling: Changing the World

One Room at a Time, authors David

Johnston and Kim Master write, Green

    remodeling actually makes and saves

    money. And this is not just long-term energy saving costs;

the cost to implement green features (rst costs) is of-

ten less than remodeling by conventional standards. In the

long term, green renovations increase the resale value of

    your home.

Living in perfect harmony with your relatives may not be

your rst choice during tough times, but it could be the

most cost-effective. Remodeling or updating your home

could make the transition much smoother.

    for the Parents

(ARA) Many families are interested in adopting a

more natural lifestyle, especially when theyre met by

life-changing moments, such as welcoming a new baby,

adopting a pet, or buying a new home. According to a

recent survey, however, while 78 percent of parents want

their families to do more to live naturally, almost as many

(63 percent) think that making changes would be dif-

    cult.

Families dont have to overhaul their entire lifestyles to

go natural, said Jen Singer, lifestyle expert, author and

founder of Mommasaid.net, an online resource for moms.

Instead, you can take small steps that are easy, conve-

nient and affordable. Even small changes can have a big

impact on our homes and the world we live in.

Singer offers the following ve tips to help families live

more naturally.Leave it at the door. Make it a household rule to kick

off shoes when entering the home. Preventing outdoor

pollutants and loose surface dirt from coming inside can

save water and energy because it means less mopping and

    vacuuming.

Conquer cleaning naturally and effectively. Try clean-

ing your home with natural cleaners, such as the new

Natures Source line from SC Johnson. The products are

powerful cleaners made with 99-plus percent natural and

naturally-derived ingredients. Whats more, the products

are affordable and available in many grocery and mass

    merchandise stores.

Pull the plug. Unplug electronics that arent in use. If

the phone charger is sticking out of the electrical outlet

without a phone on the other end, its still using energy.Encourage other family members to unplug their phone

chargers, laptops and handheld game chargers when

    theyre not in use.

Carry a full load. Maximize the efciency of appliances

and conserve water and electricity by operating the wash-

er, dryer and dishwasher with full loads. In some areas,

electric companies may offer less expensive nighttime

rates, so its possible to save money by running electrical

    appliances at night.

Hang it to dry. In the long run, a dryer does more damage

breaking down clothing bers than the washer. Hanging

clean laundry on a line will save energy and that favorite

    pair of jeans.

Using these savvy tips will make it easier to live a more

natural lifestyle at home without paying a premium. For

more tips to live naturally, visit www.NaturesSource-Cleaners.com.

  • 8/6/2019 Coconut Point Press March - April 2009

    10/16

Page 10 Your Newspaper March 2009

(NUI) - When refreshing spring weather begins to roll

in, wouldnt you rather be outside enjoying it, rather than

inside cleaning? This year, tackle those spring cleaning

jobs early so that spring can be a time of relaxation and

    enjoyment.

Polish your wooden cabinets. You dont need to replace

wooden cabinets when they lose their luster. A thorough

cleaning, followed by a moisturizing polish, can make old

cabinets look new. The most common method of clean-

ing cabinetry is with a little Woolite and water. But if you

want to restore luster and shine, try a product like Touchof Oranges Wood Cleaner (www.TouchOfOranges.com),

followed by Touch of Beeswax Wood Preserver. Simply

spray the cleaner on a wooden surface, wait a few min-

utes, and then rub 0000-grade steel wool in the direction

of the grain. Finish cleaning by wiping the wood with soft

terrycloth, then use the preserver. Cabinets will shine,

giving your kitchen a spring-fresh look.

Clean your carpets. Carpets can be a major trap for dust

and pet hair, not to mention the salt and dried mud thathave been tracked in from winter shoes. There are many

professional services to choose from, but for those do-it-

yourselfers, renting or buying a carpet cleaner can save

bundles of money. The Oreck Rinse-A-Matic (www.oreck.

com) can shampoo, rinse and dry carpeted oors, and, as a

bonus, can also rinse, scrub and dry kitchen oors.

Say goodbye to mineral stains. Mineral deposits look de-

pressing on windows and shower stalls. And while clean-

ing the windows is often a warm-weather job, theres no

reason to put off cleaning the bathroom. Hard water stains

on glass shower doors and windows look unattractive, so

remove them with specialized products like CLR (www.

jelmar.com), Lime Away or Bring It On Cleaner (www.

BringItOnCleaner.com). Some hard water stains will

often yield to scrubbing with white vinegar and a non-

scratch pad. If you nd that vinegar is ineffective, resortto stronger chemicals.

(NC)-Its tempting to cut corners in a down economy,

but thats the last thing one should do in the construc-

tion of a new house. Owning a home with superior ef-ciency will pay high dividends for years to come.

A green home uses less energy and natural resourc-

es, says Todd Blyth at Nudura, the manufacturer of

insulated concrete forms. It creates less waste and

is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants.

Equally important benets include lower energy bills,

reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less exposure

to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. As a result,

the net cost of owning a sustainable home is compa-

rable to cost of a conventional one.

The four key areas to ensure the best human and en-

vironmental health are: water efciency, energy ef-

ciency, material selection, and indoor environmental

quality. Heres a useful little checklist as a guideline:

Use LEED certied materials: This internationallyacclaimed benchmark by Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design provides a third-party certica-

tion program, setting an international benchmark for

the construction and operation of high performance

    sustainable buildings.

Start with concrete, not wood: With concrete walls

by Nudura, combined with their ceiling and oor tech-

nology, youll get several key green components all in

one. The system consists of stay-in-place, interlocking

concrete forms. With this Lego-like method (of rein-

forced concrete sandwiched between two layers of

expanded polystyrene foam insulation) the total build-

ing envelope stands to be up to nine times stronger,

far more re resistant, and far more sound insulated.

Furthermore, this innovation (nudura.com) is design-

friendly for architects, much faster for builders, createsless construction waste, and provides defence against

toxicity and mold that is so often a associated with tra-

ditional wood framed walls. And of equal importance,

its a building method that will deliver energy savings

    of up to 70 percent.

Aim for indoor water conservation: Ask about grey-

    water irrigation and rainwater harvesting.

Insist on energy efciency: In addition to a concrete

structure, some of the more popular choices for con-

servation include: an earth sheltered architectural

    design; installing efcient ducts, lighting and fans;

planning for gas or solar hot water, heating and cool-

    ing systems.

Ask for green materials: Structural choices range

from fume-free paints, nishes and adhesives, to sus-

tainable oor coverings, sidings and trim.

    How to u you

Its Never Too Early to Start Spring Cleaning

(ARA) From blueberries to houseplants, GIY (Grow

It Yourself) is the new mantra as folks turn back to the

future to simplify their lives while gardening for the

    greener good.

GMGs gardening trends for 2009 reveal a resurgence

in perennials, growing native plants, creating blendedgardens using vegetables and herbs in ower beds, culti-

vating with best practices, planting to attract wildlife and

    going local.

One simple way to be an eco-booster is to create natural

habitats for wildlife with native plants that attract birds,

    bees and butteries.

Tranquil moments may be few but the recent rise in gar-

dening reconnects us with nature, family and friends as

    we share our bounty.

Plant mint and fragrant thyme varietals in between cracks

of stone pathways and grow strawberries for a delightful

edible groundcover around trees. Fruit-bearing shrubs and

trees provide color, privacy and fruitful bounty mingling

    among veggies and perennials.

Buying local is all the rage. Gardeners are aware of theirrole as naturalists and conservationists, and are looking

for native plants that thrive in their own backyards.

For the rst time, water is in and out. Whether bringing

in fountains, endless waterfalls, or sh ponds, the sooth-

ing sounds of water can turn any backyard into a private

oasis. Costa Farms (www.CostaFarms.com) offers plants

that drink responsibly like succulents, cactus, yucca and

ferns, which are easy, conserve water, and add sizzle to

your landscape. The Knock Out family of roses, from

bright red to sunny yellow, is drought-resistant.

From bean sprouts on kitchen countertops to green walls

laden with herbs and micro-greens, plants are decorating

spaces as art- in-motion. Tropical plants like bromeli-

ads and orchids create instant beauty and give a boost of

    oxygen and clean the air.

Lack of time and knowledge have been primary reasonspeople hesitate to garden. Not anymore. Novices and ex-

perienced gardeners hungry for inspiration, information,

and instruction are packing master garden classes for in-

struction and gardening how-to tips. Gardeners are gob-

bling up information from friends, classes and workshops,

local garden media, magazines, and the Internet and shar-

ing their success stories with bloggers and friends

As time-starved consumers try to juggle busy schedules

most seek quick and simple solutions to meet their gar-

dening needs. Containers are no longer a trend but a gar-

den staple in large and small spaces.

Americans have embraced the world bazaar of vibrant

colors, textures, sights and sounds. Asian, African, Indian,

and Mid-Eastern inuences are showing up in patterns,

    textures and colors.

    Trends

  • 8/6/2019 Coconut Point Press March - April 2009

    11/16

March 2009 Your Newspaper Page 11

(NC) - With the stress of returning to

work after the holiday season, March

Break is the light at the end of a long,

cold, wintry tunnel with millions of

    North Americans eeing the workday

    world for some much-needed down

time. But with the cold and u season

still in full swing, would-be travelers

should consider the following tips to

avoid packing any unwanted colds on

    their winter getaway.

    Plan ahead

Plenty of rest is the backbone of a

strong immune system. Begin a regu-

lar sleep schedule at least two weeks

prior to your holiday. Also, take a Vi-

tamin C supplement for an extra cold

    ghting boost.

    En route

While ying, be sure to drink uidsthroughout the ight and avoid alco-

    holic or caffeinated beverages that

    dehydrate. Pressurized cabins dry out

    crucial protective sinuses, leaving

    travelers more vulnerable to micro-

    bial infection. Consider carrying an

    alcohol-based sanitizer that effective-

ly kills bacteria to clean surfaces such

as arm rests, tray tables and seat belt

buckles for both planes and cars.

    Changing temperature

Whether heading south or on a ski

trip, pack appropriate clothing in your

    carry-on to anticipate the temperature

change, which can weaken your im-

mune system and increase chances of

    catching a cold.

    Smart packer

Dont pack the entire medicine cabi-

net on the chance someone might get

sick. Instead lighten the load and bring

along a cold remedy like new Zicam

    Rapid Melts which may signicantly

reduce the duration and severity of a

cold if taken within the rst 48 hours

    of symptoms.

Dont Pack a Cold this March Break

(NUI) - As you work your way through tax season,

it might also be a good idea to re-evaluate your auto

    insurance policy.

The beginning of the year is a great time to get your

nancial house in order, says Wade Bontrager, vice

president of Marketing for GMAC Insurance. While

youre already looking at your nances, its easy to get

out that auto insurance policy and make sure youregetting everything you can from it.

Bontrager advises North Americans to review their

    auto insurance policies when:

Your insurance company has new offerings. Your

insurance company might have introduced new, ben-

ecial services. So, take advantage of them.

You drive less. If high gas prices have lowered your

annual driving mileage, some companies now offer a

substantial low-mileage discount, such as the Low-

Mileage Discount launched in 2008 by GMAC Insur-

    ance in collaboration with OnStar.

You could save money. Make sure your coverage is

at a sufcient level to protect your assets, but also re-

search any discounts that you may qualify for, such asa multi-vehicle discount that saves you money when

you insure more than one vehicle with the same com-

    pany.

You have a specialized vehicle. If you have a spe-

cialized vehicle, whether its an RV or a commercial

vehicle, a standard auto insurance policy will not pro-

vide the coverage you really need. Check with your

auto insurer to see if they offer specialized policies. If

not, consider switching to a company that does. If you

move all of your auto insurance policies to one com-

pany, you may be eligible for a loyalty discount.

Its so important that you fully research your policy,

adds Bontrager. For example, our customers are of-

fered a series of concierge-style services, and we want

everyone to know the extra value they are receivingfree of charge.

    (NC)-COLUMBIA, S.C. - Old-timers will say you havent

seen Spring until you see the azaleas in full bloom.Combined with the nearly as ubiquitous owering dog-

woods and a myriad of other blooming bushes and bulbs,

spring seems to explode with color in South Carolina each

year, from big city to village to the wildowers of the up-

    state mountain forests and meadows.

The azaleas are a particular highlight, and begin blooming

in the Lowcountry by early March and peaking across the

state, ending in early to mid-April in the Upcountry.

Taking a drive around the state, checking out the sights,

also is taking a drive through history.

For instance, the distinctive buttery gardens at Middle-

ton Place in Charleston can boast of being the rst for -

mal gardens in the English Colonies, forged from marshy

woodlands along the banks of the Ashley River around

1740.Next door is eclectic Magnolia Plantation and Gardens,

owned by the same family for more than 325 years and a

birthplace of ornamentally grown azaleas and camellias.

Nearby, Summerville Azalea Park contains eight pictur-

esque acres of azaleas, wisteria, pines and dogwoods, and

is a spring must-see in the historic small town at the upper

end of the Ashley River above Charleston.

Heading up Interstate 26, Edisto Memo-

rial Gardens in Orangeburg is home to

    more than 4,000 roses and a 2,600-foot

    boardwalk into the tupelo-cypress wet-

lands along the North Fork of the Edisto

River. Its one of only about two dozen ofcial test gar-

dens in the United States sanctioned by the All-America

    Rose Selections Inc.

Other highlights include Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in

Columbia, where formal and informal plantings join an

impressive stand of old rose varieties and cooling shade

    garden.

Notable public gardens also include Kalmia Gardens at

Coker College, where a 60-foot drop in elevation provides

for a surprising diversity in plants and wildlife.

Two commercial operations also bear mention. Park

Seed in Greenwood is one of the nations largest and

oldest mail-order operations and a nice place to visit in

the spring. Orchid fans and plant-lovers of all kinds also

wouldnt want to miss Carter and Holmes Orchids in

Newberry, where 18 greenhouses offer one of the largest

lineups of the prized plants in the nation.

And last but not least is 9,000-acre Brookgreen Gardenson the coast near Myrtle Beach. Visitors will nd the larg-

est collection of outdoor sculpture in the country amid a

Lowcountry setting of lush plantings, live oaks and a pon-

toon boat tour of long-abandoned ancient rice elds.

Lesser Known LawsThose who live by the sword get shot by those who

    dont.

The things that come to those who wait will be the

things left by those who got there rst.

If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call

    it Fed UP?

Why isnt the number 11 pronounced onety-one?

The economy has tanked. Sales are down. Youre disap-

pointed that you didnt get your promotion, youre angry at

your colleague for missing a deadline, or youre bummed

that you blew the presentation. It is easy at times like this to

let negative events affect you and inuence how you appear

    to others.

To start viewing the glass half full, practice these eight be-

    haviors:

AVOID DOWNBEAT TOPICS. Dont keep discussing

negative things. You do not want to keep talking about how

you lost the contract, or how bad the economy is. People

will steer clear of you to avoid listening to your negative

    comments.

REMIND YOURSELF TO BE POSITIVE. One man Icoached put up a small sign by his desk with the initials KIP

(Keep It Positive). Another man had a boss who would pass

him a note that had B+ (be positive) on it if he started being

    negative in meetings.

TAKE ACTION. Dont let a bad situation paralyze you.

Explore different options. Take a class, sign up for training.

Keep your resume up-to-date; dont put your job search on

hold. The more action you take, the more likely the issue will

    be resolved.

STOP COMPLAINING. Complaining is draining. People

get tired of listening to the same negative comments about

someone over and over again. If you have an issue with

someone, talk to him or her, dont complain to others. Plus,

people can start wondering what negative things you are say-

    ing about them.

DISAGREE AGREEABLY. Saying, I see it differently,

or I disagree lets people know that you have a different

opinion without attacking them or their opinion. If you say,

Youre wrong, you are pointing ngers.

AVOID USE OF THE WORD BUT. But can negate

what comes before it. If someone says, I agree but ... or

You did a nice job but ... you are waiting for the bad news

Use the word and. You did a nice job, and it would even

    be better if ...

WORD THINGS POSITIVELY. The same thought can of-ten be expressed negatively or positively. One manager said

I dont want my people viewed as unprofessional or incom-

petent. Or, I want my people viewed as professional and

competent. What would you rather hear?

    REMEMBER YOUR NONVERBAL COMMUNICA-

TION. Have a pleasant facial expression. No stern expres-

sions, frowns, or stares of gloom as you go about your day

Greet people when you see them. Avoid sarcasm and elimi-

nate any harsh tone to your voice.
